Socioeconomic Mobility Of Local Refugees: An Analysis Of Syrian, Congolese And Ukrainian/Russian Refugees, Ahna Mullins Jan 2018

Socioeconomic Mobility Of Local Refugees: An Analysis Of Syrian, Congolese And Ukrainian/Russian Refugees, Ahna Mullins

Undergraduate Research Posters 2018

In FY18, the United States has received 18,214 refugees with Ohio receiving 6.69% of that total, which places Ohio second only to Texas. In partnership with one of largest refugee resettlement agencies in Ohio, this study explored the experiences of refugees from Ukraine, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Syria. A literature review, interviews, and mini focus group suggest a diverse set of experiences, yet some common themes. Such themes include a can-do attitude, perseverance, and a long-term orientation towards success. In contrast to refugees from Syria and Ukraine, DRC refugees experience additional challenges due to prolonged residence in …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Regulatory Control And Corruption Based On Product And Market Regulation And Corruption Perceptions Indices, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Robert Mcclelland, Peter Williamson, Nile M. Khanfar, Frank J. Cavico

HCBE Faculty Articles

This paper focuses on the relationship between two important business indices: the degree to which a country's business is centrally regulated, and the level of business corruption perceived in that country. The main purpose and methodology is to analyze the data from 47 globally dispersed countries based on the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Product and Market Regulation Index and Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index from 2013. The statistical methodology using regression analysis demonstrates that there is a significant negative relationship between levels of perceived corruption and levels of regulation. This paper empirically confirms that corruption tends to …

Destination Image And Tourist's Imagination: The Forgotten Component, Jalayer Khalilzadeh Jan 2018

Destination Image And Tourist's Imagination: The Forgotten Component, Jalayer Khalilzadeh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this dissertation was to 1) develop a comprehensive scale to measure visitors' imagination, 2) investigate the structural relationship between imagination and tourism destination image (TDI) components of cognitive, affective, and conative, 3) compare and contrast the various qualities of vividness, richness, saliency, control, and spatial between imagination and prospection, and 4) study the impact of different information sources on the evolving process of prospection to imagination. By conducting four different studies and seven data collection phases, the imagination scale was developed, validated, and utilized to test the proposed structural and differential hypotheses. In study 1, the phenomenology …

Identifying Type Of Expertise As A Means To Measure Crm Knowledge Structures, Camilo Jimenez Jan 2018

Identifying Type Of Expertise As A Means To Measure Crm Knowledge Structures, Camilo Jimenez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Crew Resource Management (CRM) training has evolved since its inception in the 1980s to better accommodate the operational needs of flight crews. However, even as the aviation and research communities have pointed to the potential benefit of providing CRM training, some criticism continues to emerge periodically which claims that there is no concrete evidence of its impact on flight deck performance and safety. Therefore, it is imperative to develop tools that allow researchers and, more importantly, practitioners, to more effectively and objectively assess training effectiveness and identify whether or not desired CRM behaviors are being put to practice during line …

Ethical Responsibility - An Arendtian Turn In Leadership Ethics, Rita A. Gardiner Ph.D Jan 2018

Ethical Responsibility - An Arendtian Turn In Leadership Ethics, Rita A. Gardiner Ph.D

Education Publications

This paper adopts an Arendtian approach to consider the interconnections among responsibility, ethics, and leadership. Considering responsibility through an Arendtian lens may offer insights into leadership ethics. These insights may help deepen our understanding of the nascent theory of responsible leadership. In particular, Arendt's emphasis on judgment illustrates the importance of responsible action. Engaging with the Arendtian corpus may help us rethink connections among leadership, ethics, and responsibility in new and productive ways. This engagement with Arendt's work can in turn add value to thinking about responsible, ethics, and leadership.

Revisiting M&M With Taxes: An Alternative Equilibrating Process, Kenneth J. Kopecky, Zhichuan (Frank) Li, Timothy F. Sugrue, Alan L. Tucker Jan 2018

Revisiting M&M With Taxes: An Alternative Equilibrating Process, Kenneth J. Kopecky, Zhichuan (Frank) Li, Timothy F. Sugrue, Alan L. Tucker

Business Publications

Modigliani and Miller present an equity-quantity shifting equilibrating process to achieve an optimal firm value in the presence of corporate taxes. However, in the era in which they derived their various propositions regarding the relation between a firm’s value and its capital structure, well-capitalized takeover specialists including private equity firms and sovereign funds did not exist, at least by today’s standards. In this paper we develop a simple arbitrage strategy, made viable by the presence of takeover firms, which presents an alternative equilibrating process to achieve the same optimal firm value. This alternative process is markedly different from that of …

Portfolio Turnover Activity And Mutual Fund Performance, Claudia Champagne, Aymen Karoui, Saurin Patel Jan 2018

Portfolio Turnover Activity And Mutual Fund Performance, Claudia Champagne, Aymen Karoui, Saurin Patel

Business Publications

We propose a new measure of portfolio activity, the Modified Turnover, which represents the portion of the portfolio that the manager changes from one quarter to the next. Compared with the traditional turnover, our Modified Turnover measure relies on portfolio holdings and takes into account the effects of offsetting trades and fund flows on portfolio turnover. We find evidence that high Modified Turnover predicts lower performance. The comparison between the highest and lowest quintiles sorted based on Modified Turnover reveals a difference of -2.41% in the annual risk-adjusted return. Furthermore, high Modified Turnover predicts lower net flows. We also find …

Measuring Firm Size In Empirical Corporate Finance, Zhichuan Li, Chongyu Dang, Chen Yang Jan 2018

Measuring Firm Size In Empirical Corporate Finance, Zhichuan Li, Chongyu Dang, Chen Yang

Business Publications

In empirical corporate finance, firm size is commonly used as an important, fundamental firm characteristic. However, no research comprehensively assesses the sensitivity of empirical results in corporate finance to different measures of firm size. This paper fills this hole by providing empirical evidence for a “measurement effect” in the “size effect”. In particular, we examine the influences of employing different proxies (total assets, total sales, and market capitalization) of firm size in 20 prominent areas in empirical corporate finance research. We highlight several empirical implications. First, in most areas of corporate finance the coefficients of firm size measures are robust …

Real Options And Endogenous Investment Costs: Evidence From Oil Rig Rates, Zeigham Khokher, Mohammad Morovati, Sheridan Titman, Shyam Venkatesan Jan 2018

Real Options And Endogenous Investment Costs: Evidence From Oil Rig Rates, Zeigham Khokher, Mohammad Morovati, Sheridan Titman, Shyam Venkatesan

Business Publications

State-of-the-art real option models predict that uncertainty lowers investments and that this effect's magnitude aligns with theory (see Kellogg (2014)). We present a model that illustrates how changes in uncertainty can result in changes in the cost of making investments rather than in changes in the level of investment. Earlier studies commonly focus on the Gulf of Mexico to examine the uncertainty-investment relation. In this region, we collect a unique dataset on the rental rates of drilling rigs to test the model. Our empirical analysis confirms that after we control for several relevant economic variables, price uncertainty negatively affects rig …

Celebrity Chefs As Influencers Of Food Well-Being, Briana Cifelli Jan 2018

Celebrity Chefs As Influencers Of Food Well-Being, Briana Cifelli

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The concept of being a “celebrity chef” has changed throughout the years. Using Block et al’s (2011) Food Well-Being pinwheel and Lane and Fisher’s (2015) research about celebrity chef influence on a UK student population, this study investigates celebrity chef culture as viewed by Millennials in the U.S. The research explores the potential influence of celebrity chefs as influencers of food culture and food habits, the modern chef’s role as celebrity endorsers for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaigns, and whether perceptions of celebrity chef culture differ between the UK and the U.S. Data collection was through an online survey using …

Against Pay Secrecy, Jeffrey Moriarty Jan 2018

Against Pay Secrecy, Jeffrey Moriarty

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Many firms keep pay secret. They do not make information about what their employees are paid available inside or outside of the firm, i.e., to other employees or to the public at large. Indeed, many firms discourage their employees from, or sanction them for, disclosing their pay. Against this, I argue that there are good moral reasons for firms to be transparent about pay. Pay transparency prevents injustice, promotes autonomy, and increases efficiency. After presenting the positive case for pay transparency, I defend it against objections, including the most common reasons firms give for keeping pay secret.

Risky Pay And The Financial Crisis: Who's Responsible?, Jeffrey Moriarty Jan 2018

Risky Pay And The Financial Crisis: Who's Responsible?, Jeffrey Moriarty

Philosophy Faculty Publications

According to an existing “environmental” narrative, the financial crisis of 2007-2009 was due in part to executive compensation packages in the financial services industry that incentivized excessive risk-taking. Also according to this narrative, those who have a duty to protect society – principally, government regulators, but also firms themselves – are open to blame for how executives were paid, and must take steps to change executive compensation. This narrative is important but incomplete. I offer a supplementary “agential” narrative. According to this narrative, executives are open to blame for the financial crisis for taking socially excessive risks. Moreover, since executives …

Accountable To Whom? Rethinking The Role Of Corporations In Political Csr, Jeffrey Moriarty, Waheed Hussain Jan 2018

Accountable To Whom? Rethinking The Role Of Corporations In Political Csr, Jeffrey Moriarty, Waheed Hussain

Philosophy Faculty Publications

According to Palazzo and Scherer, the changing role of business corporations in society requires that we take new measures to integrate these organizations into society-wide processes of democratic governance. We argue that their model of integration has a fundamental problem. Instead of treating business corporations as agents that must be held accountable to the democratic reasoning of affected parties, it treats corporations as agents who can hold others accountable. In our terminology, it treats business corporations as “supervising authorities” rather than “functionaries.” The result is that Palazzo and Scherer’s model does not actually address the democratic deficit that it is …

The Meaning-Making Structures Of Outsatnding Leaders: A Comparison Of Conative Capability At Conventional And Postconventional Leader Development Levels, Aidan Patrick Harney Jan 2018

The Meaning-Making Structures Of Outsatnding Leaders: A Comparison Of Conative Capability At Conventional And Postconventional Leader Development Levels, Aidan Patrick Harney

PhDs

The majority of managers and leaders do not advance to postconventional stages of ego development (Boyd & Laske 2018), yet increased leader effectiveness has been correlated with the quality of personal meaning-making acquired at postconventional levels of maturity. This dissertation provides an original contribution to knowledge regarding the differences in personal meaning-making structure which are found by comparing conventional- with postconventional-stage leaders. This study focuses on the elements which make up a leader’s conative capability i.e. their conative intelligence and their conative complexity. Along with cognition and affect, conation is one of the three traditionally identified components of mind (Vandenbos …

Where Will Technology Lead Us?, Jerry Kennelly Jan 2018

Where Will Technology Lead Us?, Jerry Kennelly

Irish Business Journal

Artificial intelligence is a misnomer in my opinion. You get out what you put in. AI seeks to simulate intelligent human behaviour in software and computers. If you consider AI software like a big database and learns along the way. It is programmed by clever humans who create algorithms which use all of the data available and process it to give a calculated result. For example, my IPhone will tell me that it’s going to take me ten minutes to drive home when I walk onto the street from my office in Killorglin. It doesn’t know I’m going home, but …

Strategies For Success: How A Small Business Competes In The Motorhome Industry In Ireland., Niamh Lenihan, Catherine Kavanagh Jan 2018

Strategies For Success: How A Small Business Competes In The Motorhome Industry In Ireland., Niamh Lenihan, Catherine Kavanagh

Irish Business Journal

The motorhome industry in the Irish economy has grown and transformed over the last 20 years with a rise in the number of motorhome companies and campsites around Ireland. This is a small competitive industry that has faced numerous economic challenges, in particular since the economic downturn in 2008. The failure of many firms’ strategy can arise from the firm’s inability to gain a competitive advantage (Porter, 2008). This study provides an analysis of how a small Irish motorhome company can achieve a competitive advantage to increase its business profitability, growth and performance. The motorhome industry in Ireland has received …

Social Partnership And Its Continuities, Brian Sheehan Jan 2018

Social Partnership And Its Continuities, Brian Sheehan

Irish Business Journal

Social partnership has long been pronounced ‘dead’ and buried, lamented by few. But thirty years on from the watershed Programme for National Recovery of 1987, the underlying influence of the 22-year construct is stronger than it might seem. How pay formation in the private and public sectors works today; how management-union disputes are resolved; how employers and trade unions engage; and how the social partners manage key industrial relations issues, all suggest important continuities with the partnership era.

Value Of Exemption From Professional Examinations: Opinion Of Third-Level Accounting Students And Graduates, Lorraine Cashman Rahilly Jan 2018

Value Of Exemption From Professional Examinations: Opinion Of Third-Level Accounting Students And Graduates, Lorraine Cashman Rahilly

Masters

In Ireland (and the UK) becoming an accountant usually involves a dual qualification system: a third-level degree followed by training and professional examination. This is commonly conceptualised as learning through knowing followed by learning through doing (Wilson, 2011; Apostolou & Gammie, 2014). Much debate exists about where the responsibility for the development of knowledge and skills lies. Third-level accounting degrees have been criticised for focusing too much on gaining exemptions from professional examinations, with employers feeling that graduates are not work ready (Albrecht & Sack, 2000; Jackling & De Lange, 2008; Pan & Perera, 2012; Bayerlein & Timpson, 2017). However, …

Examining The Potential Of Design Thinking For Marketing Students In The Context Of Workplace Learning And Performance Challenges, Christina Pinkaow Jan 2018

Examining The Potential Of Design Thinking For Marketing Students In The Context Of Workplace Learning And Performance Challenges, Christina Pinkaow

Masters

Design thinking, which initially emerged in the 1980s, has notably been recently receiving increased attention, particularly in business communities, as a process that enables rapid, innovative, and user-centric problem solving (Lockwood, 2010). As the forthcoming generations of marketing graduates enter this ‘Consumer Age’, they will be forced to think innovatively and empathetically in order to adjust to constant and rapid changes in our environment (Hanttu, 2013). Design thinking equips modern marketers with the opportunity to become consumercentric and effectively generate innovative solutions on a constant basis to complex challenges that exists (Mohr, 2015).

While the concept is gaining increasing hold …
