Information Technology And The Search For Organizational Agility: A Systematic Review With Future Research Possibilities, Paul P. Tallon, Magno Queiroz, Tim Coltman, Rajeev Sharma

Data Analytics & Information Systems Faculty Publications

Organizations are increasingly turning to information technology (IT) to help them respond to unanticipated environmental threats and opportunities. In this paper, we introduce a systematic review of the literature on IT-enabled agility, helping to establish the boundary between what we know and what we don’t know. We base our review on a wide body of literature drawn from the AIS Basket of Eight IT journals, a cross-section of non-Basket journals, IT practitioner outlets, and premier international IS conferences. We review the use of different theoretical lenses used to investigate the relationship between IT and organizational agility and how the literature …

How America Permitted The Great Recession, Robert A. Moss Iii Dec 2018

How America Permitted The Great Recession, Robert A. Moss Iii

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Many people have thrown out many ideas as to how the Great Recession happened. Some blame the banks, some blame the system, and others blame the lawmakers. The truth is much more complicated, and many different events lined up to make it happen. The essential fact is that there would likely have been a recession in the 2000s as a result of the commodities price recession of the 90s. What made the recession bad enough to be called the Great Recession was the gradual de-regulation that occurred after Glass-Steagal. Primarily, this paper will deal with the laws surrounding the banking …

The increase in the LEI-N, which is designed to predict economic activity six months into the future, portends moderate economic growth in Nebraska through the first half of 2019. Initial claims for unemployment insurance fell in Nebraska during November, while business expectations remained strong. Respondents to the November Survey of Nebraska Business reported plans to increase both sales and employment at their businesses over the next six months.

Like A Jar Of Flies? A Study Of Self-Control In An Organizational Social Dilemma With Large Stakes, Matthew W. Mccarter, Jonathan R. Clark, Darcy Fudge Kamal, Abel Winn

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We study the practice of self-control in an organizational social dilemma when the stakes are large, using 47 years of vital census data from 18th century Sweden. From 1750 to 1800, eighty percent of Sweden lived in a simple-structure organization called a bytvång or village commons. The amount of resources a village family received was a function of their size. During this period, crop failures left the population facing starvation. Using autoregressive time-series modeling, we test whether the people of Sweden continued to take steps toward increasing the stress on the commons by marrying and birthing children or practiced …

It is generally accepted that gamblers have different levels of risk of developing gambling problems and require various harm minimization tools and resources. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that responsible gambling messages should be customized and target specific groups of gamblers. This project aimed to understand hypothesized differences between cohorts of gamblers and receive qualitative feedback on archetypal targeted messages used to increase use of responsible gambling tools. Methods Focus groups were held to test messages for specific cohorts: young …

A Decade Of Change: A Case Study Of Regulatory Compliance Costs In The Produce Industry, Lynn Hamilton, Michael Mccullough Dec 2018

A Decade Of Change: A Case Study Of Regulatory Compliance Costs In The Produce Industry, Lynn Hamilton, Michael Mccullough

Agribusiness

Regulatory pressure is a source of increasing concern to the California agricultural industry. In the decade since 2006, new rules at both the state and federal levels have imposed significantly higher regulatory burdens on growers, specifically with respect to food safety, water quality, labor wages, air quality; and worker health and safety. Additional regulations are in process as the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act is developed at the local levels for implementation in 2022, and minimum wage and overtime laws for farmworkers are phased in, also by 2022.

Previous studies regarding the regulatory environment in California have quantified the total cost …

Between Developed And Emerging Markets: Globalization Of Large Consumer Good Enterprises, Christine Savino Ms. Dec 2018

Between Developed And Emerging Markets: Globalization Of Large Consumer Good Enterprises, Christine Savino Ms.

Honors Scholar Theses

A few years ago, The Economist promulgated that “the only way that companies can prosper in [emerging] markets is to cut costs relentlessly and accept profit margins close to zero” (The Economist, 2010). Likewise, according to the World Bank’s 2018 Ease of Doing Business Index[1], the least ranked countries (#94 and under out of 190 countries) are solely undeveloped and developing, while the top 20 countries are solely developed economies (World Bank, 2018). It has been long held that emerging markets[2][3] are non-strategic investments for multinational expansion, and that business giants from …

The University of North Dakota (UND) Libraries have developed a multi-award winning Customer Service Program (CSP) involving longitudinal assessment and continuous improvement. The CSP consists of iterative training modules; constant reinforcement of Customer Service Principles with multiple communication strategies and tools, and incentives that boost morale and foster not only compliance, but initiative-taking and innovation. The CSP became a widely adopted part of campus-wide assessment, beyond the libraries. Subsequent presentations at conferences led to multiple requests and implementation at other libraries.

The Relationship Between Polychronicity And Social Networks: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Research And Development Professionals, Fabiola Bertolotti, Elisa Mattarelli, Janet Dukerich

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

How do knowledge workers interact with their colleagues when organizations increasingly ask them to work on multiple activities, projects and working spheres simultaneously? Given the importance of social networks for individual and organizational success, in this study we explore the relationship between individual preferences for engaging in multiple tasks simultaneously (individual polychronicity), the perception of the organization’s demands in terms of engaging in multiple tasks simultaneously (organizational polychronicity), and centrality in instrumental networks. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, we collected data from knowledge professionals in a research and development (R&D) unit. Our results show that both individual and organizational polychronicity were …

The Effects Of Collegiate Mentoring: An Empirical Review, Rebecca Cohen Dec 2018

The Effects Of Collegiate Mentoring: An Empirical Review, Rebecca Cohen

Senior Capstone Projects

The effects of mentorship have dominated discussions of strategic leadership development in the hospitality industry. At first glance, it may seem difficult to form a lasting and beneficial mentoring relationship due to the challenges inherent in creating a natural and organic rapport between two individuals. The purpose of the following review is to showcase the comparison between existing literature in regard to the effects of the mentor-mentee relationship in the collegiate setting. Through the analysis of the existing literature, three cumulative themes became apparent: career development, psychosocial support, and role modeling. The mentor-mentee relationship, which is usually positive, can become …
