Revisiting Market Segments Based On "What Attracted Visitors To Montana", Norma P. Nickerson, Jake Jorgenson
Revisiting Market Segments Based On "What Attracted Visitors To Montana", Norma P. Nickerson, Jake Jorgenson
Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications
Destination branding has risen in popularity since place branding has proven beneficial for states, cities, and countries looking to position themselves away from competition. In 1999, nonresident visitors to Montana were segmented based on what attracted them to the state and compared against one another resulting in the article “Branding a state from features to positioning: Making it simple” in the Journal of Vacation Marketing. Since then, a statewide branding initiative was developed and implemented providing the state with a cohesive message for stakeholders. This study revisits the segmentation process from pre-brand visitors with those who recently traveled to the …
Placing The Chips In An Investor’S Game Of Roulette: Global Warming And Its Effect On The Stock Market, Clayton Bohle
Placing The Chips In An Investor’S Game Of Roulette: Global Warming And Its Effect On The Stock Market, Clayton Bohle
Kaleidoscope
The Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions, has radically changed the global market for green technology. The demand for clean energy has increased, causing an influx of new companies producing renewable energy products and creating cleaner processes for fossil fuel consumption. The question is: how can we, as investors, take advantage of this growing market? Through research into the different sectors of the green energy market, this paper breaks down each type of renewable energy, providing an evaluation of the various investment options. Comparing these investments with the different betting options in roulette, the paper …

A large number of newly listed firms have significant involvement in international business activity. In this paper, we examine the effect of international business activity on the pricing of initial public offerings (IPOs), post-IPO performance, and survival. In a large sample of U.S. IPOs over 1981–2012, we find that firms with exports and/or foreign sales prior to going public have significantly lower underpricing than firms without international business activity. Furthermore, firms with international business activity significantly outperform purely domestic IPO firms over 3- and 5-year periods after going public and have a significantly higher survival rate. Overall, we provide strong …
Segment Disclosure Transparency And Internal Capital Market Efficiency: Evidence From Sfas No. 131, Young Jun Cho
Segment Disclosure Transparency And Internal Capital Market Efficiency: Evidence From Sfas No. 131, Young Jun Cho
Research Collection School of Accountancy
Using the adoption of SFAS 131, I examine the effect of segment disclosure transparency on internal capital market efficiency. SFAS 131 requires firms to define segments as internally viewed by managers, thereby improving the transparency of managerial actions in internal capital allocation. I find that diversified firms that improved segment disclosure transparency by changing segment definitions upon adoption of SFAS 131 experienced an improvement in capital allocation efficiency in internal capital markets after the adoption of SFAS 131. In addition, I find that the improvement in internal capital market efficiency was greater for firms that suffered more severe agency problems …

"Eco-Friendly" Marketing: Beyond The Label, Elizabeth Gingerich
Business Faculty Publications
The science is unequivocal: every ecosystem in the world is in decline. Without significant intervention, the world’s inhabitants of almost 7.3 billion are in peril. In light of this imminent threat and as a response to market pressures, public outcry, and changing national and international policies, businesses are seeking to rebrand their products by adopting a more environmentally-friendly approach. From various certification processes to other forms of green marketing, eco-labeling has been trending and consumer engagement rising. But without a thorough analysis of a particular product, the consumer’s belief that he/she is helping to contribute to a solution, may be …

Small And Large Faculty-Size Adjusted Accounting Program Rankings Based On Research-Active Faculty: A Uniform Approach, Mark C. Dawkins, Matthew M. Wieland, Donald L. Ariail
Faculty Articles
Prior studies have ranked accounting programs based on the use of various methodologies, many of which did not control for faculty size. Even in studies that controlled for faculty size, a common issue was the inclusion of faculty and PhD students who were not research active. To resolve these sample issues, this study uses a sample of top-6 accounting journal publications over the 2006-2013 period to demonstrate an innovative, efficient, and uniform approach for calculating faculty-size adjusted accounting program rankings. This approach can be modified to include more accounting journals. Specifically, the study controls for faculty size by including only …

Exploring Alternative Approaches To Entrepreneurial Exporting Growth – Government Intervention Or ‘Self-Help’?, Norah R. Cussen
Exploring Alternative Approaches To Entrepreneurial Exporting Growth – Government Intervention Or ‘Self-Help’?, Norah R. Cussen
Reports
This study is exploring the untapped potential of entrepreneurs to ‘self-help’ when seeking to enter new markets through exporting. This research is exploring the concept of effectuation as a ‘self -help’ theory. In doing so, the researcher hopes to begin to determineif this ‘self-help’ nature of entrepreneurs could be cultivated and potentially produce an alternative approach to entrepreneurial exporting growth. In order to explore this topic the researcher has engaged with exporting entrepreneurs and has drawn on their personal experiences and thoughts. This provided the researchers with vital data from ‘grassroots’ level perspective. This data was then analysed and provided …

Green Supply Chain Management In Chinese Electronic Manufacturing Organisations; An Analysis Of Senior Managements’ Perceptions., Eoin Plant, Yusen Xu, Gareth R.T. White
Articles
Green supply chain management and reverse logistics has emerged as a key area of research interest. Recent environmental regulations have also stimulated interest in this field. However, information sharing is a pre- requisite to efficient and effective logistics utilisation. Manufacturing organisations in China were argued to be 10-20 years behind their Western counterparts in relation to information sharing in their supply chains (Li and Yuan, 2009). This barrier needs to be addressed if China is going to maintain and grow its manufacturing position in the world, attempt to address green supply chain issues and their negative externalities. A systematic literature …

Climate And Energy: Opinions Of Nonmetropolitan Nebraskans 2015 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Tonya Haigh
Nebraska Rural Poll
Many rural Nebraskans are concerned about more severe droughts or longer dry periods in their area, insect-borne diseases like West Nile Virus, and more extreme summer temperatures in their area. Fewer rural Nebraskans are concerned about the availability of water for their community or home or more frequent extreme rains or floods. Residents of the North Central region are more likely than residents of other regions of the state to be concerned about more severe droughts or longer dry periods in their area.
Few rural Nebraskans reported their household experiencing health problems during the drought of 2012. However, many persons …

Perspectives On Community Life In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: 2015 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy
Nebraska Rural Poll
By many different measures, rural Nebraskans are positive about their community. Many rural Nebraskans rate their community as friendly, trusting, and supportive. Most rural Nebraskans also say it would be difficult to leave their community. In addition, most rural Nebraskans disagree that their community is powerless to control its future.
However, the proportion of rural Nebraskans satisfied with many social services and entertainment services has decreased across all nineteen years of the study. Declines in satisfaction levels across all 19 years are seen with nursing home care, medical care services, senior centers, mental health services, entertainment, retail shopping and restaurants. …
