Fit And Misfit Of Plural Sourcing Strategies And It-Enabled Process Integration Capabilities: Consequences Of Firm Performance In The U.S. Electric Utility Industry, Arun Rai, Ilgaz Arikan, Jessica Pye, Amrit Tiwana
Fit And Misfit Of Plural Sourcing Strategies And It-Enabled Process Integration Capabilities: Consequences Of Firm Performance In The U.S. Electric Utility Industry, Arun Rai, Ilgaz Arikan, Jessica Pye, Amrit Tiwana
Computer Information Systems Faculty Publications
Recent work has shown that a firm’s plural sourcing strategy, which determines how much it chooses to make versus how much it chooses to buy, requires consideration of the complementarities and constraints that affect the differential advantages of making and buying. Elaborating on this perspective, we theorize how (mis)fit between a firm’s plural sourcing strategy of simultaneously making and buying and its development of information technology (IT) enabled interfirm and intrafirm process integration capabilities influences firm performance in deregulated markets. We position our theory development and empirical tests in the context of the power-generation segment of the U.S. electric utility …

One of the world’s most influential business leaders is a respected chief executive because, as she says, she “does not aspire to a title, but aspires to be a leader.” Cathy Engelbert leads more than 220,000 professionals as Chief Executive Officer for Deloitte LLP, and inspired hundreds of attendees at the recent Partners in Business Accounting conference at Utah State University. Engelbert’s leadership path started as captain of her collegiate basketball team. Attending Lehigh University on a lacrosse scholarship, she walked onto the women’s basketball team and later found herself leading her team on the court. As she maneuvered through …

From a textbook, I can learn about the United Nations: what it does, who it employs, how it works alongside national governments. But there is something surreal about being in the Geneva headquarters of the United Nations and realizing that working at such a renowned organization does not have to be a pipe dream. My semester of study and travel as a Huntsman Scholar has been filled with many such moments of clarity. Researching at Oxford University’s world-class Bodleian Library, witnessing the struggle of Syrian migrants firsthand on the Austrian-German border, learning from anAggie alum turned top-level executive at Barclays—all …

The development of information technologies and their increased significance for business environments have forced businesses to rethink traditional methods of generating value and surviving the hyper-competitive conditions of our time. The uncertainty, dynamism, volatility, and impermanence of modern commercial environments have shifted the foundations of business success and survival.
Key factors that now affect firm performance and determine sustainability include knowledge creation, knowledge management, uncertainty management, organizational intelligence, and supply chain administration. The authors propose an analytical approach to identifying and enhancing these critical factors, and they describe ways for firms to exploit their strengths and minimize or compensate for …

This is the first State of the Commonwealth Report. It is jointly sponsored by the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University and the Virginia Chamber Foundation. While the report represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, it does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. Similarly, it does not represent the views of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce or it's president and CEO, Barry DuVal.
The goal of the report is to stimulate thought and discussion that ultimately will make Virginia an even better place …

A university is more than an amalgamation of several colleges. It also is an organization which celebrates the full richness of faculty contributions including those vital and exciting contributions in research, scholarship and creative activity within their disciplines. These contributions come in many forms: journal articles, book chapters, monographs, art works, music compositions, performances of many varieties and a host of others. Funded research contributions are similarly varied. Through such activities, faculty members stay at the growing edges of their fields, and in so doing, they enrich their intellectual lives as well as those of their students.
