HCBE Faculty Presentations

Our research explored intergenerational value similarities and differences between 4,301 working adults in the Latin American countries of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras and Mexico. In doing so, we expand intergenerational value change theory and value theory by exploring value structures using Rokeach’s (1973) value orientation typology. Research results indicate that all generations from Argentina and Brazil shared similar High Personal and High Moral value orientation types and those from Colombia, Honduras and Mexico shared similar High Personal and High Competence value orientation types. We discuss the significance and implications for practitioners and managers, limitations and made suggestions for further research.

Do Sensory Ad Appeals Influence Brand Attitude?, Sung-Joon Yoon, Ji Eun Park Nov 2012

Do Sensory Ad Appeals Influence Brand Attitude?, Sung-Joon Yoon, Ji Eun Park

Business Faculty Publications

This article presents two studies that investigate whether or not sensory appeal preferences in advertisements affect brand attitude. Study 1 seeks to discover empirically whether self-referencing and positive affect mediate sensory appeals to influence consumers' attitudes toward a brand, and whether such mediation effects differ across various ad formats. Study 2, a case approach, attempts to derive core sensory concepts through qualitative techniques as applied to an established specialty coffee brand. The results indicate that self-referencing and positive affect both have significant mediating effects between sensory appeal preferences and attitudes toward a coffee brand. Moreover, the finding that sensory preferences …

The Global Engineering Consultancy Market., Andrew C. Gross

Business Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to assess and analyze the size and characteristics of the engineering consultancy market in select Western nations and worldwide. A secondary goal is two-fold: to look briefly at the training required for careers in this field and to evaluate the strategies of the participating firms. This sector has grown in the past half-century to about U.S.$550 billion revenue globally, with nearly 3 million establishments and about 500,000 employees. There are giant, multinational firms that span across regions; but the sector is still highly fragmented, and the top 10 firms have less than 15 percent …

Perception Of African Youth On Personal Computer Utilization: The Case Of Ethiopia And Rwanda, S. Negash

Faculty Articles

The tendency to pursue innovativeness and adopt new technologies has been found more likely with younger individuals and a strong relationship between attitude and personal computer (PC) utilization has been found. However, research in these areas is mainly focused on high-income countries. Do these findings hold for low-income countries? What are the perceptions of African youth on the factors that impact PC use? There is a dearth of micro-level studies that promote understanding about the behavior of individuals in low-income countries. This study looked at demographic data including age, gender, grade level, region, and prior experience among 228 youth from …

Supply Network Relationships: A Review Of Empirical Evidence, Andrew Humphries, Carlos Mena Nov 2012

Supply Network Relationships: A Review Of Empirical Evidence, Andrew Humphries, Carlos Mena

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Supply networks are prevalent industry structures which, like the academic literature, are complex, confusing and short on practical guidance. We evaluate the current position of empirical research to expose the main constructs that can be used to study cooperative supply network relationships, to identify emergent themes, gaps and shortcomings, to share insights with managers and, to propose future research approaches. Five significant drivers of supply network relationship behaviors are identified: complexity, power, alignment of objectives, knowledge management and coordination. This paper provides a unique, topical 'map' of the supply networks field and proposes a theoretical model for integrating the many …

Capacity Planning For Elderly Care In Ireland Using Simulation Modeling, Mohamed Ragab, Waleed Abo Hamad, Amr Arisha

Conference papers

Global population aging is creating an immense pressure on healthcare facilities making them unable to cope with the growing demand for elderly healthcare services. Current demand-supply gaps result in prolonged waiting times for patients and substantial cost burdens for healthcare systems due to delayed discharges. This paper describes a project aimed at presenting modeling and simulation to address elderly care pathways within the Irish healthcare sector. The management of frail patients admitted to acute hospitals and the introduction of the new intermediate care beds are alternative interventions that healthcare executives are interested in simulating to examine their impact on the …

The Walt Disney Company: A Corporate Strategy Analysis, Carlos Carillo, Jeremy Crumley, Kendree Thieringer, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Robins Case Network

Walt Disney is a completely integrated media powerhouse. Films provide material for theme parks and resorts, consumer products, and even a cruise ship. Network and cable broadcasting is also a part of the integrated Disney package. None of Disney’s competitors are as successfully integrated. Still, in spite of a long record of success, Disney is facing more competition on many fronts and, like other media and entertainment companies, must continue to adapt to a changing technological and social environment.

Groupon, Inc., Kevin Beiles, Trip Humphrey, Ed Solarz, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Robins Case Network

Groupon’s CEO Andrew Mason made a terrible mistake when he refused to accept Google’s $6 billion dollar offer to acquire his company. About a year after its IPO in 2011, Groupon’s market capitalization was only $2.5 billion, and its main product was coming to be thought of as junk e-mail. The company has pursued growth through expanding into new services and products, with the goal of becoming an e-commerce platform that “locks in” the business of local merchants.

Strategic Planning In Construction Professional Service Firms: A Study Of Irish Qs Practices, Roisin Murphy Nov 2012

Strategic Planning In Construction Professional Service Firms: A Study Of Irish Qs Practices, Roisin Murphy

Articles

The role and usefulness of strategic planning has been documented over several decades of strategic management research. Despite the significant body of existing knowledge in the field of strategic planning, there remains limited empirical investigation of the construction sector, specifically professional service firms operating within it. The construction sector is hugely important to the Irish economy, yet until now, no empirical investigation has been undertaken to determine the strategic planning process in construction professional practices in Ireland. A two-phase mixed methods study was undertaken to ascertain the extent of strategic planning within Quantity Surveying practices in Ireland. Characteristics of the …

Investors Do Respond To Poor Mutual Fund Performance: Evidence From Inflows And Outflows, George D. Cashman, Daniel N. Deli, Federico Nardari, Sriram V. Villupuram

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

Abstract

We examine the relation between mutual fund performance and gross flows for a large sample of actively managed U.S. mutual funds. Unlike previous studies that have only examined periods of generally increasing net flows, our sample includes periods of both increasing and decreasing net flows. We find that outflows are related to performance, with investors withdrawing money from poor performers. We also find that outflows and inflows respond asymmetrically to performance, outflows increase more aggressively following poor performance, and inflows increase more aggressively following good performance. Additionally, we find a symmetric performance net flow relation.

Common Practices In Destination Website Design, Cuauhtémoc Luna-Nevarez, Michael R. Hyman Nov 2012

Common Practices In Destination Website Design, Cuauhtémoc Luna-Nevarez, Michael R. Hyman

WCBT Faculty Publications

The Internet has become a key marketing channel for tourist destinations. To identify typical features of destination websites, a content analysis of websites for top global destinations—by number of international arrivals—was conducted. Six factors were evaluated: primary focus, navigation and interactivity, visual and presentation style, textual information, use of advertising, and use of social media and travel aids. In addition, a cluster analysis was conducted to identify homogeneous groups of websites in the sample. The findings revealed three naturally occurring groups. Inter-cluster differences suggest that DMOs use different approaches to target potential visitors, as evidenced by websites ranging from purely …

Disclosure And Cost Of Equity Capital: An Analysis At The Market Level, Yan Li, Holly I-Hwa Yang Nov 2012

Disclosure And Cost Of Equity Capital: An Analysis At The Market Level, Yan Li, Holly I-Hwa Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study examines whether disclosure reduces the market cost of capital. A stock’s implied cost of capital is defined as the expected return that equates its current price to the present value of its expected future free cash flows. We compute implied costs of capital for each firm and use their average as a measure of the market cost of capital. Using a sample of management forecasts issued between 1994 and 2010, we find that an increase in disclosure at the aggregate level results in a lower market cost of capital. This result is robust to alternative measures of disclosure …

Do Filtering, Dialogue And Networking Improve Learning In Equivocal And Information Rich Contexts? - A Study Of Sense-Making In Policy Making Contexts, Adrian Wolfberg Nov 2012

Do Filtering, Dialogue And Networking Improve Learning In Equivocal And Information Rich Contexts? - A Study Of Sense-Making In Policy Making Contexts, Adrian Wolfberg

Student Scholarship

We examine learning outcomes in intelligence analysts--the likelihood to shift intelligence analyst's mental models--within policy-making dyads of analysts and decision-makers operating in complex, high-stake contexts. We ask to what extent do properties of information present in the environment--information overload and equivocality--and two behavioral dispositions present in the dyad--one possessed by the decision maker (feedback) and another by the analyst (perspective taking)--influence analyst's learning outcomes. In particular, we focus on the combined impact of three analyst's behavioral responses--filtering, dialogue and networking--to either mitigate the negative effects of overload and equivocality, and/or improve the potential positive effects of feedback and perspective taking. …

Can Us Economic Variables Predict Chinese Stock Market?, Jeremy Goh, Fuwei Jiang, Jun Tu, Yuchen Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the last few decades, we observed a significant increase in global economic activities and these activities may have an impact on both China's economy and stock market. Given the potential impact, we empirically examine whether US economic variables are leading indicators of the Chinese stock market. Prior to China joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the end of 2001, we find no statistical relationship between US economic variables and the Chinese stock market returns. However, we find US economic variables have statistically significant predictive power for periods after China's admission into the WTO. In addition, we show that …

Economic Effects Of The Minimum Wage, Kevin F. Hallock Nov 2012

Economic Effects Of The Minimum Wage, Kevin F. Hallock

Economics Faculty Publications

The US minimum wage, at almost 75 years old, remains the topic of many academic studies and much policy debate despite the fact that only about 5% of hourly employees are currently paid at or below the federal minimum. There are many possible and interesting economic effects of the minimum wage. The issue that has received by far the most attention is whether increasing the minimum wage has a negative effect on employment, and if so, for whom and by how much. Economists first approach this question through the basic theory of a perfectly competitive labor market where all workers …

Patent Trolls: Legit Enforcers Or Harrassers?, Deli Yang

School of Business Faculty Research

Since the turn of the century, 'patent trolls' have emerged as one of the most topical debates among patent holders. However, nearly ten years later, stakeholders are still unable to reach consensus as to the 'right' or 'wrong' of 'trolls'. Against this backdrop, our debates open with the landmark case of Blackberry between RIM and NTP to provide thoughts as to whether NTP is considered a troll. Then there is a focus on some conceptual issues surrounding 'patent trolls', and its origin citing relevant mini-cases. This column also lays out the fierce arguments for or against patent trolling among scholars …
