Division I Student-Athlete Degree Choice Assessment, Tony Terrell

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Though the NCAA has established rules that require student-athletes to complete their college degree in an expeditious manner, the 40/60/80% rule may impinge on student-athlete academic decisions (i.e., degree choice).Yet limited empirical data exist regarding the nature and prevalence of student-athlete degree impingement. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Student-Athlete Degree Choice Questionnaire (SA-DCQ). The SA-DCQ assesses factors that influence Division I student-athletes' degree choice. An initial 40 item, 4 component SA-DCQ instrument was piloted with 170 Division I student-athletes. In order to develop scales, Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was conducted. PCA results yielded 13 …

Conditional Lot Splitting To Avoid Setups While Reducing Flow Time, Jacob V. Simons, Mark E. Kraus, Willis Mwangola, Gerard Burke

Logistics & Supply Chain Management: Faculty Publications

Previous research has clearly and consistently shown that flow time advantages accrue from splitting production lots into smaller transfer batches or sub-lots. Less extensively discussed, and certainly undesired, is the fact that lot splitting may dramatically increase the number of setups required, making it impractical in some settings. This paper describes and demonstrates a primary cause of these “extra” setups. It then proposes and evaluates decision rules which selectively invoke lot splitting in an attempt to avoid extra setups. For the closed job shop environment tested, our results indicate that conditional logic can achieve a substantial portion of lot splitting’s …

Implications To The Traditional Higher Education Model In A Time Of New Economic And Demographic Realities, Phillip Imel

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the world’s developed countries the tendency is to a decreasing or stagnant, aging population. Traditional higher education has occurred early in life with little retraining in adulthood. The current demographic and economic realities demand a change in the role of traditional higher education as it must be more flexible and portable. Higher education must play a central role in the lifelong learning process as new technologies become available. Changes will occur with or without the approval of the established higher education hierarchy as businesses and governments demand quicker, cheaper, and better delivery methods to the current system. Technology is …

The Russian Village, Urban Infrastructure Issues, And The Vertically Integrated Agriculture Model, Phillip Imel Nov 2012

The Russian Village, Urban Infrastructure Issues, And The Vertically Integrated Agriculture Model, Phillip Imel

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Russia’s population total has been in decline since 1992 and this is most evident in the villages of Russia. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the large farm collectives, many villages’ raison d'être ceased to exist. Today people continue to leave the villages for what they consider to be the better economic promise of the larger cities. There are serious societal and infrastructure issues related to the village exodus to the larger municipalities. In this paper, a vertically integrated agriculture model is examined as one step towards a more vibrant village economy. A vertically integrated model based upon …

For the first time, this autobiography is …

Student Loan Debt, Steven D. Dolvin Nov 2012

Student Loan Debt, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Obviously real estate was the focus of the recent credit (or subprime) crisis. However, many investors believe that student loan debt, which is also bundled and sold (i.e., collateralized), is the next "crisis" area. Student debt has risen substantially, as has the percentage of borrowers in delinquency. See these two articles: Wall Street Journal and New York Times.

Insider Trading, Steven D. Dolvin Nov 2012

Insider Trading, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Insider trading (i.e., trading on material nonpublic information) is illegal. However, corporate executives are allowed to trade stock in the firms they manage. This is difficult to reconcile since these executives, in all likelihood, have such information. A recent study by the Wall Street Journal found that executives trading ahead of corporate earnings announcements earned substantially higher returns (or avoided substantially lower losses). See article here.

Financial Services Consolidation And Performance In New York State Savings And Loan Associations, 2000-2011, Mine Aysen Doyran Nov 2012

Financial Services Consolidation And Performance In New York State Savings And Loan Associations, 2000-2011, Mine Aysen Doyran

Publications and Research

The market structure-performance relationship has been tested for US banking in industrial organization studies. Two divergent hypotheses with regard to this relationship are the Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) Paradigm and Efficient Structure Hypothesis (ESH). This paper presents the test results of both hypotheses with respect to the New York State S&L associations using the time-series and cross sectional (firm-level) data for the most recent period 2000-2010. The results of PEGLS regression indicate that performances of S&Ls vary with respect to operating cost, credit risk and capitalization. Neither market share nor concentration, however, plays a significant role in explaining profitability. The results partially …

Thanksgiving, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As with all American traditions, if it happened once or twice it is one. Therefore I present my traditional Thanksgiving piece. The History of Thanksgiving and of Football both go back into the Middle Ages, and so it may not be so strange that the two would become intertwined in modern America.

The Relationship Among The Liquidity In Real Economy, Financial Economy And Inflation, Zhaoxuan Sun Nov 2012

The Relationship Among The Liquidity In Real Economy, Financial Economy And Inflation, Zhaoxuan Sun

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

This paper introduces the principles supporting the fisher transaction equation. Then, it transforms the traditional quantity equation, and adds the financial economic department into the equation to estimate currency liquidity respectively. We show that when liquidity enters into the real economy and the financial economy, the capital price will change earlier than the product price does. We could also interpret that the excess liquidity in the financial economy firstly affects the capital price. Then, the capital price will take positive effects on the product price. This is opposed to the influence mechanism taken by liquidity on the real economy. We …

Stock Market Efficiency In The S&P 500 With Respect To Day Of The Week, Zachary James Rodenbarger Nov 2012

Stock Market Efficiency In The S&P 500 With Respect To Day Of The Week, Zachary James Rodenbarger

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Theoretically speaking, we assume that markets are efficient and that investors should not be able to earn abnormal returns without privately held information. The fact that fund managers beat the market can simply be explained as luck. However, realistically speaking, the markets involve humans that do not always make rational decisions, which can lead to market inefficiencies. This paper looks into one such inefficiency which regards trading day of the week in the S&P 500 through three different forecasting periods coming before, during, and after the financial crisis of 2008. Theoretically we would expect to find no pattern or correlation …

Link Between S&P 500 And Ftse 100 And The Comparison Of That Link Before And After The S&P 500 Peak In October 2007, Michael Joseph Silk

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

The paper reviews the correlation between the S&P 500 and the FTSE 100 before and during the 2008 global financial crisis. It found that The S&P 500 has a strong causation effect on the FTSE 100, both before and since the financial crisis. This link seems to have increased after the October 2007 peak in the S&P 500. Since the crisis, the FTSE 100 appears to have a weak causation effect on the S&P 500. Before the crisis there was no apparent impact on the S&P 500’s movements from movements in the FTSE 100.

The Empirical Study Of Earnings Management Based On Chinese Listed Companies, Yang Zhang Nov 2012

The Empirical Study Of Earnings Management Based On Chinese Listed Companies, Yang Zhang

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Earnings management that is used to manipulate book earnings to an expected level has been one of the controversial topics in the accounting field. It occurs two ways: one is accrued earnings management and the other is real earnings management. Many studies show that these two methods have a reciprocal relationship based on the costs of using them. The accrued earnings management method is preferred when the accounting standards are flexible and the real earnings management is preferred when the legal systems are good. This paper verifies its findings by drawing a link to the new accounting standard announced by …

The Global Financial Tsunami : 2008, Juan Manuel Chaves Echeverri Nov 2012

The Global Financial Tsunami : 2008, Juan Manuel Chaves Echeverri

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

In 2008 a series of bankruptcies of financial institutions led the United States and the principal economies of the world into a recession of great magnitude that required exceptional government intervention.

It started on September 14th when Lehman Brothers announced that it was entering into chapter 11 bankruptcy. After this, there was intervention in recognized multinational corporations like Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and American International Group. There were also the bank failures of Washington Mutual and Citigroup.

The main cause of this crisis was the excessive level of leverage of the financial industry, which had its roots in the real …

Economic Impact Of The Ability Of Nebraska Agriculture To Irrigate: The Case Of 2012, Nebraska Farm Bureau, Decision Innovation Solutions

Nebraskiana Publications: Resources and Materials on the 37th State

With the harsh 2012 growing season behind for Nebraska crop producers, sights are now on the prospects for 2013. An exceptional drought gripped much of the United States from mid-June to the end of the growing season. In many regards, the drought persists in many parts of the country. Without significant moisture accumulations prior to spring planting 2013, drought conditions may continue into next year’s growing season. Since the drought of 2012 became a cause of concern in mid-2012, there have been discussions regarding ways to limit the use of water for agricultural purposes. Many of these discussions will result …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: November 16, 2012, Eric Thompson, William Walstad, Adam George

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) dropped slightly, declining by 0.06%, during October 2012. The decline in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, followed three months of increase. The slight decline in the LEI-N is not sufficient to reverse the trend seen in the previous three months, and the Nebraska economy is expected to expand slowly in November and December followed by moderate growth in the first half of 2013. Looking at individual components of the LEI-N, there was a decline in three of the six components. Single-family building permits declined …
