Examining The Use Of Social Media Among Four-H Alumni In Louisiana, Kali Boudreaux Zammit Jan 2012

Examining The Use Of Social Media Among Four-H Alumni In Louisiana, Kali Boudreaux Zammit

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the use and determine the preferred method of social media among 4-H alumni in Louisiana. Based on a review of literature, communicating with youth through social media has become a major trend and necessity, especially among 4-H Youth Development and Cooperative Extension Service professionals. The Zammit Social Media Questionnaire, a 24-item instrument that includes multiple choice, multiple answer, open-ended, ranking, and Likert scale questions, was developed and administered online to 161 Louisiana 4-H alumni who received the 2011 Louisiana 4-H Senior Honor Cord and provided usable e-mails. The final response count was …

Impulse Buying On The Internet, Claire Elizabeth Crafts Jan 2012

Impulse Buying On The Internet, Claire Elizabeth Crafts

LSU Master's Theses

Technology makes buying faster, smarter, and more convenient for consumers, and supplies endless opportunities for impulse buying. Research of this topic examines influencers for impulsive online shopping, and marketing techniques used to encourage such actions. After a thorough literature review to identify important factors relating to impulsive purchases and to develop hypotheses, a survey is conducted to provide data on which the hypotheses can be tested. The survey is divided into four sections examining the effectiveness of online marketing techniques, shopping habits, Internet habits, and questions relating to a recent online impulse purchase. Theories to test include ones relating to …

Threats To Information Security Revisited, Michael Whitman, Herbert J. Mattord

Faculty Articles

The battle for the protection of information assets continues to rage at all organizations, big and small. In the ever-changing world of information security, new threats emerge, and old threats remain potent risks to poorly prepared organizations. It is critical to the ongoing protection of valuable information assets to understand these threats, new and old. This study seeks to inform organizations and researchers about the characteristics of specific threat categories and the relative dangers they pose. In addition, the study provides updated findings of a study conducted in 2002. New findings reveal the more things change, the more they stay …

What Are The Correlates Of Interdisciplinary Research Impact? The Case Of Corporate Governance Research, William Q. Judge, Thomas Weber, Maureen I. Muller-Kahle Jan 2012

What Are The Correlates Of Interdisciplinary Research Impact? The Case Of Corporate Governance Research, William Q. Judge, Thomas Weber, Maureen I. Muller-Kahle

Management Faculty Publications

We explore the concept of interdisciplinary research impact and better understand what factors might be associated with it. Using the field of corporate governance research as a case study and linking our research impact concept to a novel measure of scholarly citation rates, we seek to understand why some corporate governance scholars are cited more than others. We first developed a comprehensive ranking of the top-100 scholars cited for their research in corporate governance and then compared that "high-impact" group with scholars who had published governance research that was not yet cited. We hypothesized that indicators from the social network …

Risk Based Internal Audit – An Empirical Model For Implementation, Mohammad Ali Bagherpour Bagherpour Velashani, Mostafa Jahanbani, Somayeh Zafarzade Jan 2012

Risk Based Internal Audit – An Empirical Model For Implementation, Mohammad Ali Bagherpour Bagherpour Velashani, Mostafa Jahanbani, Somayeh Zafarzade

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

Internal auditing plays an important role in the efficiency and effectiveness of internal control system in organizations. Internal auditing should provide correct information to management about effectiveness of risk management and internal controls including compliance with organizational laws and regulations. At this time, there are different types of internal auditing, which primarily accept and apply procedures such as testing transactions, testing accuracy and reliability of accounting books and financial reports, the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of control reports and testing compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. However, none of these offer an opinion about qualitative aspects of organizational management, especially …

The Robins Center: Is Less More?, Randle D. Raggio, John Richardson

Marketing Faculty Publications

The Robins Center at the University of Richmond, home of Richmond’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, had hosted a Presidential debate in 1992, but at 38 years old it was time for a major renovation. In mid-March 2011, based on the success of the men’s basketball program over the past two seasons, a generous donor had agreed to contribute the total amount needed to renovate the Robins Center.

In late April, Jim Miller, Richmond’s Athletic Director, had to make a presentation to the board of trustees and the university president with his proposed renovations. One of his major decisions was …

The Influence Of Hrm Activities On Performance-Related Outcomes: Exploring The Dynamics Within The “Black Box”, George C. Banks Jan 2012

The Influence Of Hrm Activities On Performance-Related Outcomes: Exploring The Dynamics Within The “Black Box”, George C. Banks

Theses and Dissertations

Research has often called for studies that attempt to explain the complex causal chain known as the “black box” between human resource management (HRM) activities and individual-level outcomes. To explore the dynamics within the “black box,” this study investigates the influence of HRM activities (e.g., practices and processes) on individual-level outcomes, taking into consideration psychological empowerment as a mediating mechanism. Furthermore, to investigate how HRM activities affect individual-level outcomes, one must consider how HRM activities interrelate to create synergistic effects. Subsequently, this research contributes to the literature of strategic HRM research by investigating how and why systems of HRM activities …

The Mediating Role Of Vision And Compassion In Physician Leadership, Joann Farrell Quinn Jan 2012

The Mediating Role Of Vision And Compassion In Physician Leadership, Joann Farrell Quinn

Student Scholarship

Physician leaders span two professional groups- that of physician and of leader. While there have been many efforts at understanding the characteristics of effective physician leaders, a greater understanding is needed on the nature of physician leadership. We surveyed the largest health care organization for physician leaders in the United States to gain a greater understanding. Findings from our qualitative research guided this quantitative study, which used PLS to analyze results from 677 online surveys to understand the causal relationship of role conflict and role endorsement to participation. Our findings reveal the mediating influence that positivity exerts upon participation. Our …

Traditional And Nontraditional Dean's Multi Level Multi Dimensional Complexity Leadership, Nicholas Spezza Jan 2012

Traditional And Nontraditional Dean's Multi Level Multi Dimensional Complexity Leadership, Nicholas Spezza

Student Scholarship

The higher education leadership literature has little to say about nontraditional candidates (executives who have never held a full time faculty post) and their ability to perform in senior leadership roles in higher education administration. We conducted a qualitative research design to capture the lived experiences of participants in higher education administration. We interviewed 21 deans in higher educational institutions. Our findings show that deans operate within what we label as a Multi Level Multi Dimensional System (MLMDS). We view this MLMDS through the lens and disciplines emerging from Complexity Leadership Theory (CLT). We also find the higher education environment …

Emerging Patterns In 21st Century Leadership: An Exploration Of Generational Normative Collisions, Donna L. Haeger Jan 2012

Emerging Patterns In 21st Century Leadership: An Exploration Of Generational Normative Collisions, Donna L. Haeger

Student Scholarship

In the current work environment, younger workers in leadership positions are overseeing workers much older than themselves. Few empirical studies have focused on the emerging patterns of leadership associated with the relationship between young managers and older workers. To address this gap in the literature, we conducted a qualitative study based on semistructured interviews with thirteen managers under the age of thirty six and thirteen employees at least twenty years older. The goal of our study is to generate grounded theory about the "lived experiences" of contemporary young managers leading older subordinates. Our exploratory findings show that the task focused …

Out Of Control: The Impact Of Unaddressed Affective Conflict On Sme Board Stability, Solange Charas Jan 2012

Out Of Control: The Impact Of Unaddressed Affective Conflict On Sme Board Stability, Solange Charas

Student Scholarship

Seventy-seven percent of low corporate governance ratings for U.S. publicly-traded companies are attributable to poorly-performing boards (GovernanceMetrics International (GMI), 2005). Research suggests a relationship between governance quality and financial performance with evidence of better performance by active vs. passive boards. While most governance research has focused on board member demographics to predict governance quality, few scholars have addressed board dynamics. Adopting a grounded theory approach to address this deficit, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 board directors of U.S. publically traded small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with high and low independently attributed governance ratings. Results indicate directors in both groups …

‘Going Through The Mist’: Early Career Transitions Of Chinese Millennial Returnees, Emily T. Porschitz, Chun (Grace) Guo, José Alves

WCBT Faculty Publications

Over the past decade management practitioners have sought to understand the career expectations of the Millennial generation - those born between 1979 and 1994 (Myers and Sadaghiani, 2010) - who are rapidly becoming a dominant force in the global economy. As workers from the Baby Boomer generation move towards retirement, organization leaders are becoming more interested in understanding how to attract and retain millennial employees most effectively (Walmsley, 2007). A large body of research is devoted to uncovering the career expectations of millennial workers, so that practitioners can better understand them. Findings suggest Millennial have high expectations regarding career success …

The Information Technology Workforce: A Comparison Of Critical Skills Of Client And Service Providers, Information Systems Management, Stephen Hawks, Kate Kaiser, Tim Goles, Christine V. Bullen, Judith C. Simon, Cynthia M. Beath, Kevin P. Gallagher, Keith Frampton

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In this article the authors explore similarities and differences in skill needs of IT service providers and the firms that providers service (clients). The results show that providers and clients are more similar than different with regard to desired skills. Client firms emphasize technical skills for new hires more than providers do despite saying that these are the skills they would outsource to providers. The results have implications for organizations’ recruiting and retention, for individuals’ career development, and for educational programs.

Stakeholder Theory And Marketing: Moving From A Firm-Centric To A Societal Perspective, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick E. Murphy Jan 2012

Stakeholder Theory And Marketing: Moving From A Firm-Centric To A Societal Perspective, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick E. Murphy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This essay is inspired by the ideas and research examined in the special section on “Stakeholder Marketing” of the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing in 2010. The authors argue that stakeholder marketing is slowly coalescing with the broader thinking that has occurred in the stakeholder management and ethics literature streams during the past quarter century. However, the predominant view of stakeholders that many marketers advocate is still primarily pragmatic and company centric. The position advanced herein is that stronger forms of stakeholder marketing that reflect more normative, macro/societal, and network-focused orientations are necessary. The authors briefly explain and justify …

Distinctive Imperatives For Mission Driven Teaching In Catholic Business Schools, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick E. Murphy, Wolfgang Grassl

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

We contend that there are distinct and socially beneficial perspectives, rooted in the Catholic Intellectual Tradition (CIT) and Catholic Social Teaching (CST), which can help nurture future managers to be more attuned to the societal and ethical impacts resulting from their marketing decisions. In this paper, we briefly review several of these themes and illustrate how such messages can be integrated into the marketing instruction that takes place inside of business schools at Catholic universities.

M&A Today: Great Challenges, But Great Opportunities, Stephen R. Goldberg, Carol M. Sanchez

Peer Reviewed Articles

The volatility in today’s financial markets creates challenges but also great opportunities for mergers and acquisitions (M&A). In uncertain times, there is a need to play it safe, but for some it is also the ideal time to seize opportunities to make great deals. As companies find distinctive ways to strategically navigate in these turbulent times, many continue to use a two-fold strategy: cut costs and stimulate growth through diversification, which includes M&A. Global M&A activity increased in 2010 and continues to increase in 2011. In this article, we report on Global M&A activity in the first half of 2011, …

Microinvestment Disputes, Perry S. Bechky Jan 2012

Microinvestment Disputes, Perry S. Bechky

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Salini v. Morocco sparked one of the liveliest controversies in the dynamic field of international investment disputes. Salini held that the word "investment" in the Convention establishing the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), although undefined, has an objective meaning that limits the ability of member states to submit disputes to ICSID arbitration. The Salini debate is central to this field because it shapes the nature, purpose, and volume of ICSID arbitration--and also determines who gets to decide those matters. In particular, Salini's decision to include "a contribution to development" as an element of its objective definition of …

Using An Elaboration Likelihood Approach To Better Understand The Persuasiveness Of Website Privacy Assurance Cues For Online Consumers, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Gregory D. Moody, Anthony Vance, Matthew Jensen, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Taylor Michael Wells Jan 2012

Using An Elaboration Likelihood Approach To Better Understand The Persuasiveness Of Website Privacy Assurance Cues For Online Consumers, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Gregory D. Moody, Anthony Vance, Matthew Jensen, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Taylor Michael Wells

Faculty Publications

Privacy concerns can greatly hinder consumers’ intentions to interact with a website. The success of a website therefore depends on its ability to improve consumers’ perceptions of privacy assurance. Seals and assurance statements are mechanisms often used to increase this assurance; however, the findings of the extant literature regarding the effectiveness of these tools are mixed. We propose a model based on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM) that explains conditions under which privacy assurance is more or less effective, clarifying the contradictory findings in previous literature. We test our model in a free-simulation online experiment, and the results of the …

Breaking Free: A Qualitative Analysis Of Entrenchment And Disruptive Strategies Of Corporate Leaders, Sherry Sanger

Student Scholarship

Using qualitative analysis of in-depth interview data from 23 Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) in diverse industries, the study aims to advance theoretical understanding of (a) when and how corporate leaders experience entrenchment, (b) what strategies corporate leaders use to disrupt or break free from their entrenchment and (c) how leaders generate disruptive strategies. Our findings show that CMOs experience both organizational and personal entrenchment, which differ in nature and significance. In general, CMOs are alert to entrenchment traps and deploy varied disruptive strategies to break free, sometimes with success. Finally, our data suggests that CMOs source their disruptive strategies from …

Toward A Positive Theory Of Disclosure Regulation: In Search Of Institutional Foundations, Jeremy Bertomeu, Edwige Cheynel Jan 2012

Toward A Positive Theory Of Disclosure Regulation: In Search Of Institutional Foundations, Jeremy Bertomeu, Edwige Cheynel

Olin Business School Faculty Research

This article develops a theory of standard-setting in which accounting standards emerge endogenously from an institutional bargaining process. It provides a unified framework with investment and voluntary disclosure to examine the lin ks between regulatory institu- tions and accounting choice. Disclosure rules tend to be mor e comprehensive when con- trolled by a self-regulated professional organization tha n when they are under the direct oversight of elected politicians. These institutions may n ot implement standards desirable to diversified investors and, when voluntary disclosures ar e possible, allowing choice be- tween competing standards increases market value over a sin gle uniform …

Illuminating The Limits Of Auditor Accountability For Fraud Detection Through A Historical Study Of Internal Control Evaluation, Stephanie D. Moussalli, O. Ronald Gray, Gokhan Karahan Jan 2012

Illuminating The Limits Of Auditor Accountability For Fraud Detection Through A Historical Study Of Internal Control Evaluation, Stephanie D. Moussalli, O. Ronald Gray, Gokhan Karahan

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Messner (2009) and Roberts (2009) argue that there are limits ofaccountability and transparency for accountants. We study the 20 th -centurydevelopment of independent auditors’ evaluation of internal controls as aU.S. example of attempted limits on auditors’ fraud detectionresponsibilities. While internal controls provide market value, theirevaluation during an audit has value largely to auditors themselves, whoshift some of the costs of the audit and much of the responsibility for frauddetection to management. A content analysis of the Montgomery’s Auditingseries from 1912 to 1998 demonstrates that the percent of text devoted toboth internal control techniques and their evaluation was a positive functionof …

Ever Expanding Responsibilities: Upstream And Downstream Corporate Social Responsibility, Judith Schrempf-Stirling, Guido Palazzo, Robert A. Phillips

Management Faculty Publications

The debate on corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been on the public and academic agenda for several decades. In general, CSR issues can be divided into production-related issues (along the supply chain - or how things are made) and consumption-related issues (towards the consumer and society at large - or how things are used). Following the terminology of Phillips and Caldweli, Z upstream CSR refers to the CSR debate along the supply chain, and downstream CSR refers to corporate responsibility towards consumers and society at large. The chapter examines current CSR issues, and proposes a social connection model to understand …

An Empirical Examination Of University Intercollegiate Athletic Expenditures, Jeffery L. Stinson, Adam Marquardt, Joshua Chandley Jan 2012

An Empirical Examination Of University Intercollegiate Athletic Expenditures, Jeffery L. Stinson, Adam Marquardt, Joshua Chandley

Marketing Faculty Publications

To date, little empirical work has examined the institutional returns associated with athletic program investments. While intangible brand effects are commonly cited, such as athletics serving as the perceptual "front porch" of the institution, direct examination of the effects of athletic programs has often been narrow in scope. Within this study, we assess the contributions of investment in athletics as compared to other areas of institutional investment, on important institutional outcomes. Data for the study was collected from two datasets, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the Equity in Athletics dataset. Fixed effects models for NCAA Football Bowl …

Types Of Jobs In Museums, N. Elizabeth Schlatter

University Museums Faculty and Staff Publications

When I worked for the Smithsonian Institution, I joked with my coworkers, "If I'm not in your department now, just wait. I will be soon." During my five years of service I worked in three different departments (exhibitions scheduling, public relations, and exhibition development) and was considering a fourth (registrar) until a job I realized that I truly wanted (curatorial) opened up at a liberal arts university in Richmond, Virginia. I should confess that prior to the Smithsonian, I gained experience as a fundraiser at a contemporary art museum in Houston.

This type of career zigzagging within the museum profession …

The Ethical Climate And Context Of Organizations: A Comprehensive Model, Anke Arnaud Dr., Marshall Schminke Jan 2012

The Ethical Climate And Context Of Organizations: A Comprehensive Model, Anke Arnaud Dr., Marshall Schminke

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

Traditional approaches to understanding the ethical context of organizations often focus on ethical work climate, which reflects the collective moral reasoning of organization members. However, such approaches overlook other components of the ethical environment that may influence how ethical judgments translate to ethical behavior. This study extends our understanding of the ethical context of organizations by considering how three distinct aspects of that context collective moral reasoning (ethical climate), collective moral emotion, and collective ethical efficacy interact to influence ethical behavior. Results from 117 work units support our hypotheses. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.
