Redefining Globalization, Aqueil Ahmad

This article highlights some facts and fallacies about globalization, with a particular reference to the global economy. To explain what is globalization and what it is not is critical both theoretically and practically for nations, corporations, and communities to benefit from it and avoid its negative consequences. Some historical antecedents of globalization and the interactive nature of its structures and processes are highlighted in this article. The analysis is expected to benefit scholars, practitioners, and agents of social change interested and involved directly or indirectly in the impacts and processes of globalization.

Investigating A Leadership Fix For A Suboptimal Mix: A Transformational Leadership Intervention For Teams With Incompatible Personalities, Marcus Daniel Weller

This study uses experimental methodology to examine transformational leadership as a buffering mechanism for problematic personality combinations. 118 German university students comprising 59 dyadic teams participated in a lab-based investigation to examine matched high levels of extraversion within dyadic teams. The presence of transformational leadership (TL) as opposed to a non-leadership intervention was investigated to examine the effects of TL on group members' task performance on both conjunctive and disjunctive tasks. To assess conjunctive task performance, participants performed an employee selection task, and to assess disjunctive task performance participants performed a NASA survival ranking task. The decision of what configurations of a product to offer is a difficult one for marketing and sales departments. In this study, we developed decision support models that can help decision makers when using operational models to manage external variety of configurable products. Our main objective is to reduce the number of product variants offered in a proper way so that inventory and demand models do not suffer from the curse of dimension. Due to its ability and flexibility, our framework can be employed under various marketing actions. We applied our framework to both qualitative and quantitative data.

Despite their predominance in developing countries, production networks vary enormously among countries and yet attempts to systematically compare their nature have been done very sporadically in the literature. Drawing on relational contract theory, this paper presents a novel framework for analyzing the differences in the ways production networks organize themselves in emerging markets by utilizing successful Asian organizational structures to illustrate strategy archetypes. The paper analyzes three different relational employment and outsourcing contract forms through which the lead firm in a production network can maintain a quasi-judicial role in resolving the contracting problems inherent in multi-firm transactions. The objective of this study is to investigate frequency-of-flight issues and the differences between frequent and non-frequent flyers’ levels of satisfaction and the importance attributed to overall airline service quality and select attributes. The results indicate that the level of satisfaction with overall airline quality and select attributes decrease the more passengers fly. Conversely, the level of importance attributed to airline amenities increased with flight frequency. Perceptions of airline quality may vary between different nationalities and different socioeconomic groups. Differences between the short- and long-haul flights, as well as domestic and international services could also exist. Airline managers need to …

Scenario planning is often used by organizations to think about future uncertainties. However, what it does in terms of changing perceptions is diffi cult to assess and quantify. To address this need, this article builds on previous studies documenting the effectiveness of scenario planning. Specifi cally, this article contributes to the data on perceptions of learning organization characteristics. This study compiles quantitative data gathered from 133 individuals working in 10 United States companies who participated in scenario planning. The objective of this thesis is to include strategic and tactical level decisions into the biorefinery supply chain design for a specific region while comparing multiple conversion technologies and biomass feedstocks. The allocation of biomass feedstocks, products, and the respective supply chain configuration locations are determined while ensuring the regions monthly biomass availability and product market demand constraints are met. This research considers all actions required to bring the bio-based products to market from harvesting, storing, and processing the biomass to market distribution. Risk management is critical to the success of contemporary firms and while new technologies present opportunities for innovation and growth, they present new risks. Risk management of information systems and technology (IS/IT) is particularly critical because firms in almost all sectors of the economy are so dependent on it. We explore firms' response to IS/IT risk management by analyzing their SEC-mandated regulation S-K risk disclosures. We find a lower than expected incidence of risk disclosures related to IS/IT and surmise that this result may be symptomatic of tension between firms' need to comply and their need to appear to comply …

The old and familiar tools of marketing strategy-making (MSM), which breed sameness and repetition, no longer apply in today’s dynamic market environment. Despite the need for new insights, we understand little of how MSM actually occurs in practice. Departing from the common focus- on the prescriptive tools and techniques of strategy– we apply a marketing-as-practice (M-as-P) lens to our exploration of how organisations engage in strategy making. We utilise an in-depth case study to explore problemistic search behaviour and individuals interactions in developing strategic marketing campaigns and uncover specific consultative and collaborative interactional practices.

Purpose: Reliance on individual talent and motivation renders creative Professional Service Firms (PSFs) highly dependent on their ability to attract and mobilise the right individuals. This paper builds an integrated framework showing firstly how creative industry PSFs can differ in their strategy for growth, and secondly how these alternative strategies for growth can influence the firm’s approach to organising and the type of talent required. The US mortgage crisis and its dire after effects have highlighted the criticality of financial literacy. And while most people would have picked up fundamental mathematical principles in schools, not everyone appreciates how arithmetic translates within the complex world of finance. Yet, given what has transpired with the subprime crisis, is it important for borrowers to appreciate complicated financial concepts before taking up a loan? A study of the US mortgage market, presented at a SMU School of Economics Seminar Series, provides some clues as it uncovers links between basic numerical skills and financial fate.
