Infomercial: A Marketing Odyssey, Bligh Macdonald
Infomercial: A Marketing Odyssey, Bligh Macdonald
Undergraduate Review
Few forms of media are so derided as the infomercial. It seems to ooze tackiness and low production standards, coupled with shameless pandering and questionable selling points. Still, the infomercial, or “direct-response” commercial, can be an astoundingly effective selling tool. In this age of ubiquitous mass media, infomercials for products such as the “Snuggie” and the “Shake Weight” have used their inherent “butt-of-joke” qualities to make millions and to attain cultural icon status. For this project, I researched the infomercial as a genre in an attempt to explain its success and rhetorical appeal. I then applied my analysis to the …
A Communications Manager's Qualifications To Enter The Work Force: The Frequency And Distribution Of Requirements, Alison N. Berry
A Communications Manager's Qualifications To Enter The Work Force: The Frequency And Distribution Of Requirements, Alison N. Berry
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
This article examines the frequency and distribution of requirements placed on communication managers within recruitment advertisements. The characteristics of recruitment advertisements seeking entry to mid-level communications managers within the Midwest region of the United States were divided into several categories including years of experience, formal education, and educational accreditation status. These categories were analyzed to identify trends and produce conclusions. The conclusions presented with the article indicate employers seek well-rounded and multi-faceted candidates, but overlook educational accreditation as a prerequisite for employment. Additionally, the article evidences both formal education and years of experience as an enhancement to a job seeker's …

Immediate Attention Please! What Matters To Customers Using A Social Network To Complain: Empirical Evidence From The Airline Industry, Run H. Niu, Ying Fan
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
The popularity of social networks and smart mobile devices makes it convenient for customers to complain about unsatisfied service experiences by posting messages online, which needs immediate attention from service providers. Since the airline industry is one of the industries with lowest customer satisfaction and some airlines have been trying to use social networks for customer service, we collected tweets from five major airlines' Twitter accounts to uncover the critical failure points complained by customers and to explore the missing links that cause the mismatches between airlines' strategic intent and customers' needs and expectations. Our findings revealed that customers' complains …

A Study Of Visual Puffery In Fragrance Advertising: Is The Message Sent Stronger Than The Actual Scent?, Mark Toncar, Marc Fetscherin
Faculty Publications
Purpose - This paper investigates visual exaggerations of fragrance advertisements by comparing subjects’ expectations resulting from print ads to their subsequent product evaluations. It then considers whether the actual scents fall short, meet or exceed these expectations.
Design/methodology/approach - By means of a semiotic analysis we capture the corresponding literary attributes of the ads to develop adjective pairs describing the meaning of the ads. Interviews are conducted to assess the meaning that consumers draw from the fragrance ads and we supplement these findings by performing a blind olfactory product evaluation of the fragrances. Paired sample t-tests are used to compare …

Off The Hook: Does The Supreme Court's Scheme Liability Ruling Benefit Firms In Litigation-Prone Industries?, Candra S. Chahyadi, Menghistu Sallehu
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
This study measures the impact afthe U.S. Supreme Court's 2008 ruling Stoneridge Investment Partners vs. Scientific-Atlanta on the cumulative abnormal returns and changes in bid-ask spread of firms in litigation-prone industries (computer, electronic, pharmaceuticallbiotech, and retail industries). Although we find, in general, positive CARs around the event, we posit and find that the conditional probability that a firm will commit an accounting misstatement affects both CAR and bid-ask spread The results show that firms with a higher probability of committing financial misstatements experience lower returns around the court's ruling. That is, the ruling increases information asymmetry and uncertainty, and thus …

Debt And Dividend Decisions: Stock Vs. Non-Stock Firms, William R. Nixon Iii
Debt And Dividend Decisions: Stock Vs. Non-Stock Firms, William R. Nixon Iii
Theses & Honors Papers
This study tests the trade-off and pecking order theories about the debt and dividend decisions for stock and non-stock firms. The decision to finance investments with debt or equity determines the firm's capital structure. The trade-off theory posits an optimal balance of debt and equity, motivating the form to use debt until its cost exceeds issuing equity thus deriving the firm's optimal capital structure. Meanwhile, the pecking order theorem contends the firm should use internal funds first, then debt, and equity as a last resort. Both theories have the same fundamentals for the payout of dividends. More profitable firms with …

"Now, please, let me bring out what I want to say, while I am full of it. I say then, that the personal influence of the teacher is able in some sort to dispense with an academical system, but that the system cannot in any sort dispense with personal influence. With influence there is life, without it there is none; if influence is deprived of its due position, it will not by those means be got rid of, it will only break out irregularly, dangerously. An academical system without the personal influence of teachers upon pupils, is an arctic winter; …

Impact Investing: Will Hype Stall Its Emergence As An Asset Class?, Philo Alto
Social Space
From when it was first coined five years ago, “impact investing” has now become more mainstream for traditional investors. However, Philo Alto argues that its development is lagging behind the promise of what it can do, and this, in turn, is hampering its emergence as an asset class in its own right.

Victory Of The Prussian Railway "Dynamic" Accounting Over The Public Finance And Patrimonial Accounting Models (1838-1884): An Early Illustration Of Th Appearance Of The Second Stage Of Capitalist Financial Accounting And A Testimony Against The Agency And The Market For Excuses Theories, Jacques Richard
Accounting Historians Journal
The history of accounting for private railway companies in Germany shows that these companies played a major role in the diffusion of historical cost accounting principles and gave birth, together with big other joint stock companies, to the “dynamic” or second stage of capitalist accounting, at least in continental Europe. If the representatives of such railway companies did not develop new concepts of accounting, notably as concerned depreciation, they had, by 1875-1879, elaborated a new theory of accounting (historical cost or dynamic theory). This theory had a profound impact at least on the German theorists of the late 19th century and …

HCBE Faculty Presentations
In this panel discussion we look at the evolution of new forms of business models in emerging economies in light of institutional voids and the opportunities those voids afford. Specifically, this session looks at the case of successful multinationals in three emerging markets India, China and Brazil. We explore the manner in which top management was able to create new business models that take advantage of the institutional voids in these markets. We analyze the evolution of these business model through the concept of sense making (Weick, 1995). Finally we propose a model of business model innovation in emerging markets.

Counterfeits, Copying And Class, Ann Bartow
Law Faculty Scholarship
Consumers who want to express themselves by wearing contemporary clothing styles should not have to choose between expensive brands and counterfeit products. There should be a clear distinction in trademark law between illegal, counterfeit goods and perfectly legal (at least with respect to trademark law) "knockoffs," in which aesthetically functional design attributes have been copied but trademarks have not. Toward that end, as a normative matter, the aesthetic features of products should not be registrable or protectable as trademarks or trade dress, regardless of whether they have secondary meaning, just as functional attributes of a utilitarian nature are not eligible …
