The University of Rhode Island offers a number of undergraduate courses that are considered high-risk, which is constituted by a high failure rate. There are a multitude of potential factors that increase the likelihood of students struggling in BUS 111, such as prior math knowledge, class attendance, lack of resources, and ineffective studying strategies. However, the most salient factors for determining performance in BUS 111 have not been identified. Therefore, I sought to examine what …

This paper explores the effects of uptick-related short-sale constraints first on the Glosten-Milgrom Model of Sequential Trade and then empirically on the stocks in the Russell 3000 index used by the SEC in the pilot program created by Reuglation SHO. Finally, the effect of uptick constraints on the relationship between the short and put call ratios is studied through the use of impulse response functions. Can The Next Housing – And Financial Crisis Be Averted?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

The costs of the subprime crisis are still being tabulated. Taxpayers of many countries are still being penalised unfairly as their governments stagger under the burden of bailing out banks poisoned by the burst of the real estate market. Regulators, including the US Fed, need to play a more active role in shaping and implementing policies that will include those meant for the real estate market. According to Wharton professor Susan Wachter, the tools needed for such effective policing are still in development. Nevertheless, the process of learning to avert the next such crisis is already underway.

Social Media: Do Context Limitations Exist?, Richard Fortier

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

Since the inception of popular social networking sites, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, millions of people around the world are becoming members of their own virtual communities that continue to grow. Communication barriers flattened with the invention of the internet, and now social networking sites are creating an organized infrastructure within the vast cyberspace. Within my research, I plan to further pursue a research gap concerning the importance of the social context in which ads are displayed. Since it is well documented that social media users are sensitive about the amount of advertising and the kind of information marketers …

It examines the events and rationale behind the Federal Reserve’s policy actions as well as the theoretical implications for inflation. However, theory and reality do not seem to coincide. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) has shown no correlation to what many refer to as the “printing of money” that has occurred during Quantitative Easing. The Debate Over The 150 Credit Requirement, Amy Wong May 2012

The Debate Over The 150 Credit Requirement, Amy Wong

Accounting

In 1983, Florida adopted a 150 credit hour rule in order for a CPA candidate to sit for the CPA exam. In 1989, the AICPA voted to recommend that all states follow Florida’s lead to adopt the 150-hour rule (Carpenter and Hock 2009). The events that led to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 raise the question of just how helpful those extra credits are in improving the knowledge of accounting professionals in their field. A previous study has shown that the 150-hour requirement does not affect pass rates (Allen and Woodland 2006). Another study has shown that when there was …

Auditor Size Vs. Audit Quality: An Analysis Of Auditor Switches, Jackie Weiner

Accounting

In recent years, there has been a debate over whether public companies should be required to have either a mandatory retention period or a mandatory rotation period for their external auditors. With all of the financial scandals that occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the idea of auditor switching has come to the forefront. There are some opponents to auditor switching when companies switch auditors due to opinion shopping. However, research has identified many other reasons for switching auditors, such as business growth or requirements for new audit procedures. When companies require more complex audits, it may become …
