Supplier Empowerment: Moderating The Casual Relationship Between Supplier Modularity Practices And Build-To-Order Supply Chain Capabilities, Kun Liao, Xiaodong Deng
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business
Psychological empowerment attracts researchers in theory building, measurements, and applications at the individual and team levels. Based on social dilemma theory and resource dependency theory, this study proposes a research model to explore (1) the relationship between supplier modularity practices and build-to-order supply chain (BOSC) capabilities, (2) the role of supplier empowerment in moderating the relationship between supplier modularity practices and BOSC capabilities, and (3) the direct impact of supplier empowerment on BOSC capabilities in a supply chain context. The model is tested with 208 responses from automotive suppliers in North America and in China.

We had to bring about an organizational innovation by reengineering the organization itself!!! The late 1990s saw us redefine the mission of the organization to be user and market centric aiming to produce solutions with a 10X difference. We had to create a program that will allow promising technologies and solutions created by engineers and scientists who were passionate to see their works utilized by the world. This required transforming a quasi-academic publicly funded lab into an engine that would generate new businesses. The transformation was not easy. This was also about the time when the dot com bubble was …
Job Security And Personal Investment Portfolio, Yan Alice Xie, Howard Qi
Job Security And Personal Investment Portfolio, Yan Alice Xie, Howard Qi
College of Business Publications
This paper incorporates human capital into the well-established portfolio theory by allowing for job security in personal portfolio choice. Our model predicts that young people hold more cash to hedge against risk associated with human capital (layoff risk). As people age, layoff risk decreases, and consequently, they invest in more risky assets – stocks in their portfolios. However, as people approach retirement, their human capital diminishes, and they become more risk averse. Hence, they hold more cash again. Our model provides a plausible explanation for the observed investment behavior of people who reveal humped shape stock holdings over the life …
A Computational Analysis Of Exchange Rate Time Series, Yu Cai, Howard Qi
A Computational Analysis Of Exchange Rate Time Series, Yu Cai, Howard Qi
College of Business Publications
International trade and its expansion with the rise of modern global economies create a need for buying, selling or borrowing a multiplicity of foreign currencies. A key aspect of currency exposures is that a company might add extra risk due to selling or buying foreign currency due to the volatile exchange rate influenced by a variety of exogenous and endogenous factors. We have conducted a fairly comprehensive computational investigation of the exchange rate using time series based on econometric analysis. We choose the exchange rate between the US dollar and the British pound because of the pounds influential position in …
Credit Risk Models: An Analysis Of Default Correlation, Howard Qi, Yan Alice Xie, Sheen Liu
Credit Risk Models: An Analysis Of Default Correlation, Howard Qi, Yan Alice Xie, Sheen Liu
College of Business Publications
This paper examines one of the major problems in credit risk models widely used in the financial industry to forecast future defaults and bankruptcies. We find that even after proper calibration, a representative credit risk model can severely underestimate default correlation. We further find that a likely reason for the underestimation of default correlation is the problematic common practice in the financial industry of using observable equity correlation as a proxy for unobservable asset correlation when the model is applied to predict default correlation. However, our results show that this proxy in common practice is not valid.
Exploring The Effect Of Unfair Work Contexts On The Development Of Fairness Beliefs, Sonia Goltz
Exploring The Effect Of Unfair Work Contexts On The Development Of Fairness Beliefs, Sonia Goltz
College of Business Publications
This paper examines what happens when individuals who perceive a fair situation discover that the situation is in fact, unfair. In a previous study, women who sued their universities discussed their initial expectations that the university would treat them fairly despite several studies that clearly indicated discrimination at universities is still a problem (Goltz, 2005a). Thus, using interview excerpts from this past study, the current paper explores how these women's expectations of fairness may have been formed, as well as how they changed after a discriminatory experience. Results suggest that the women's expectations of fairness arose in part from three …
Analyzing The Relationship Between Dependent And Independent Variables In Marketing: A Comparison Of Multiple Regression With Path Analysis, Junhong Min, Debi P. Mishra
Analyzing The Relationship Between Dependent And Independent Variables In Marketing: A Comparison Of Multiple Regression With Path Analysis, Junhong Min, Debi P. Mishra
College of Business Publications
Multiple regression models continue to be widely used in marketing. Within the regression framework, researchers have to grapple with and resolve several contentious issues. For example, multicollinearity, nonsimultaneous estimation of parameters, inherent measurement error in independent variables, absence of overall goodness of fit indices, and lack of compelling guidelines for adding and deleting model variables are some common estimation problems associated with this method. In the absence of universally acceptable guidelines, researchers often use judgment calls to deal with these issues. Such ad-hoc approaches, in turn, compromise the potential usefulness of multiple regression models. In this paper, we position path …
The Political Economy Of Taxation: A Critical Review Of A Classic, Nancy Staudt
The Political Economy Of Taxation: A Critical Review Of A Classic, Nancy Staudt
Faculty Working Papers
This book review reexamines Henry Simons famous contribution to the tax policy literature, "Personal Income Taxation: The Definition of Income as Problem in Fiscal Policy" (1938). It argues that while Professor Simons was concerned with tax fairness and the redistribution of income, he adopted a definition of income that worked to undermine the interests of many of the poor individuals in society that he sought to support.
Tax Theory And "Mere Critique": A Reply To Professor Zelenak, Nancy Staudt
Tax Theory And "Mere Critique": A Reply To Professor Zelenak, Nancy Staudt
Faculty Working Papers
In this symposium essay, I briefly explore the usefulness of critical scholarship generally and then point to the manner in which this type of analysis can (and does) advance Professor Zelenak's aim of devising technical solutions to difficult policy problems. I then turn to Zelenak's critique of my article, "Taxing Housework." I argue that far from undermining my proposal to tax imputed income, Zelenak's work highlights several reasons for considering the proposal as an alternative to the existing tax structure. Importantly, I do not claim that taxing women's household labor is a perfect solution to the social and economic problems …
The Theory And Practice Of Taxing Difference, Nancy Staudt
The Theory And Practice Of Taxing Difference, Nancy Staudt
Faculty Working Papers
This is a review essay that examines Professor Edward McCaffery's important book, "Taxing Women." It argues that while McCaffery provides a detailed and nuanced analysis of the feminist and economic issues, his work is problematic in several ways. First, it is not clear that the optimal theory of taxation leads to the policy reform he proposes-it may be both underinclusive and overinclusive. Second, even if McCaffery has identified a clear economic rationale for taxing married women at a lower rate than men and single women, feminists may object to this proposed tax structure on a number of grounds. Finally, McCaffery's …
The Hidden Costs Of The Progressivity Debate, Nancy Staudt
The Hidden Costs Of The Progressivity Debate, Nancy Staudt
Faculty Working Papers
In this Article, I argue that.by reaching the agreement that the poor should have no tax liability, the contest over progressivity has centered improperly on the rights and responsibilities of relatively wealthy citizens. The wealthy are widely perceived to have valuable property that, if shared with society, will enable the smooth operation of the democratic state. At the same time, the wealthy are perceived to have liberty interests, which if violated, could lead to the ruin of the domestic economy
Although the debate over progressivity has lasted for more than a century, traditional tax theorists have limited their discussion to …
Taxing Housework, Nancy Staudt
Taxing Housework, Nancy Staudt
Faculty Working Papers
This article examines the tax policy rationale for excluding non-market household labor from the tax base and argues that the conventional rationals no longer withstand scrutiny. The article goes on to argue that it is possible to include non-market household labor into the tax base, while at the same time avoiding the imposition of costs upon the (mostly) women who supply the labor. Moreover, and mort important, tax policy reform along these line would increase householder laborers' access to public retirement benefits and signal the important of the work to society generally.
Assessing The State Of Cross Cultural Mentoring Research, Terri A. Scandura Phd, John Mezias
Assessing The State Of Cross Cultural Mentoring Research, Terri A. Scandura Phd, John Mezias
Management Faculty Articles and Papers
There is increased attention to examining cross-cultural mentoring due to increased internationalization of the firm and the rise of the Multinational Corporation (MNC). New contexts for mentoring relationships will require new theoretical lenses and a variety of research designs in the coming years. We provide an overview of the literature that touches on various aspects of Cross Cultural Mentoring Research (CCMR) and develop a framework to categorize emergent streams of research. These streams are the diversity/diversified mentoring perspective, the cross-cultural mentoring perspective, and the expatriate mentoring perspective. All three approaches examine cross-cultural mentoring; however, we develop an integrative framework that …

The Impact Of Involvement In The Organisation-Public Relationship: Measuring The Mediating Role Of Involvement Between Organisation Behavior And Perceived Relationship Quality, D S. Bortree, Richard D. Waters
The Impact Of Involvement In The Organisation-Public Relationship: Measuring The Mediating Role Of Involvement Between Organisation Behavior And Perceived Relationship Quality, D S. Bortree, Richard D. Waters
Public and Nonprofit Administration
Stakeholder involvement has played a significant role in the evolution of public relations from a strategic communication function to one of relationship management. Despite encouragement to explore the impact involvement has on the organisation-public relationship, few scholars have examined this construct. This study measures involvement in the non-profit organisation-volunteer relationship by using Zaichkowsky’s (1985) personal involvement inventory and examines its impact on relationship quality. New cultivation strategies, nurturance and instrumental aid, are identified. Results suggest that involvement plays a role in mediating the impact of cultivation strategies on the quality volunteers perceive in the non-profit organisation relationship.

The Impact Of Ethnic Diversity On The Ladies Professional Golf Association: A Case Study Of Anheuser-Busch And Its Sponsorship Objectives And Strategies, Joon-Seo Andrew Choi
Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)
Between January 2001 and November 2009, players of Asian decent won nearly 30% of the 287 LPGA-sanctioned tournaments held during the period. By contrast, only 15 years ago (in 1995), an Asian player won only one of the 37 LPGA tournaments held that year(Ladies Professional Golf Association [LPGA], 2009). Clearly a new generation of golferse has significantly increased the ethnic diversity of the LPGA and it tournament winners. THis study investigated whether and how ethnic diversity in the LPGA has influenced the objectives and strategies of LPGA sponsorship decisions for the Anheuser-Busch Company (A-B). This research included 11 semi-structured interviews …

Regional Innovative Capacity In China: From The Perspective Of Embedded Autonomy, Ying Zhou, Xiaohua Yang, Rachel Parker, Paul Steffens
Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Strategy
Innovation is widely considered as the core driver of nations' economic growth and competitiveness. Since the start of economic reform in 1978, the provincial governments in China have gained much autonomy, which has led to the co-existence of multi-level innovation systems, national innovation system and regional (provincial) innovation system. With the economic development and social progress, the disparities in innovative capacity (I C) among regions in China are becoming increasingly larger. Considering the unique innovation context of China and drawing upon the research on IC, this paper proposed to employ theories of embedded autonomy and governed interdependence, which was developed …
Foreign Produced Content And Japanese Price Disinflation: An Empirical Study, Peggy Takahashi, Daniel Blakley, Joel Oberstone, Yasuhiro Akiyama
Foreign Produced Content And Japanese Price Disinflation: An Empirical Study, Peggy Takahashi, Daniel Blakley, Joel Oberstone, Yasuhiro Akiyama
Economics, Law, and International Business
This research investigates the role non-macroeconomic factors have played in subduing inflationary pressures in Japan. We investigate the hypothesis that the under-recognized presence of goods with high foreign produced content (FPC) in the consumer market basket has coincided with reduced price-level increases over the time period 1991-2004. An empirical examination and descriptive comparison of CPI market basket items and import data categories suggest the negative relationship between FPC and the CPI inflation rate over this time period is significant. Our conclusions suggest the extent to which measures of inflation are considered to be an accurate gauge of macroeconomic conditions or …
Spreadsheet Simulation Of Airline Reservation Policy Using Multimedia Software, Joel Oberstone
Spreadsheet Simulation Of Airline Reservation Policy Using Multimedia Software, Joel Oberstone
Business Analytics and Information Systems
A hypothetical business simulation case study using a stand-alone spreadsheet is used to illuminate the rationale of airline overbooking. Because almost everyone has personally encountered the implications of being “bumped,” the selection of this particular case subject is motivated by the belief that half of the problem (or more) of teaching a so-phisticated analytical method is in getting the stu-dent's attention. Airline overbooking, it seems, pre-sents such a case. In order for a student to “drill down” the spreadsheet skills, several multimedia tools, Wimba and Jing, are used to produce web hosted, mp4 video files of a library of short …
Intelligent Procedures For Intra-Day Updating Of Call Center Agent Schedules, Vijay Mehrotra, O. Ozluk, R. Saltzman
Intelligent Procedures For Intra-Day Updating Of Call Center Agent Schedules, Vijay Mehrotra, O. Ozluk, R. Saltzman
Business Analytics and Information Systems
For nearly all call centers, agent schedules are typically created several days or weeks prior to the time that agents report to work. After schedules are created, call center resource managers receive additional information that can affect forecasted workload and resource availability. In particular, there is significant evidence, both among practitioners and in the research literature, suggesting that actual call arrival volumes early in a scheduling period (typically an individual day or week) can provide valuable information about the call arrival pattern later in the same scheduling period. In this paper, we develop a flexible and powerful heuristic framework for …

Sustainability Through Profitability: The Triple Bottom Line, Connie I. Reimers-Hild
Kimmel Education and Research Center: Presentations and White Papers
Today’s highly competitive, globalized world requires organizations and businesses to think differently about how they are going to stay in business. Businesses can no longer afford to focus on profits as their sole purpose for existence. Organizations must instead think about the “Triple Bottom Line” and its implications for their ability to grow their brand, customer loyalty and profits.

The Influence Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Job Satisfaction Factors And Affective Commitment On The Intention To Quit For Occupations Characterized By High Voluntary Attrition, Kenneth Mark Baylor
HCBE Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to determine the antecedents to the intention to quit in an occupation characterized by a high degree of voluntary attrition. This study posits that job satisfaction and affective commitment are antecedents to voluntary turnover. The study concerns the application of Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory to determine the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic job satisfaction factors and affective commitment on the intention to quit among drivers in the solid waste management industry. Participants were volunteers taken from an industry leading publicly listed company, a premier privately held organization, and a unionized operation which represent all three …
The Relationship Between Perceived Leadership Practices And Organizational Culture Within The Aerospace Industry, Bradley Michael Mccain
The Relationship Between Perceived Leadership Practices And Organizational Culture Within The Aerospace Industry, Bradley Michael Mccain
HCBE Theses and Dissertations
There is a common thread of leadership research that theorizes the dynamic between a leader's behavior and their followers is essential in encouraging employees to exceed expectations, thereby increasing organizational performance (Bass, 1985; Bennis & Thomas, 2002; Kouzes & Posner, 1987). Research indicates transformational leadership correlates well with organizational culture, but the number of empirical studies is few. Kouzes and Posner (2002) maintain that organizations create culture; therefore a leader's behavior can and does affect organizational performance. Schein (2004) maintains it is leadership's duty to step outside the organizational culture to initiate changes (by their behavior) when warranted.
The purpose …

Audited financial statements are the basis for the communication of essential financial information. Accordingly, the reliability of the financial statements is of extreme importance to all parties involved in the process. This paper identifies the three primary parties as the organization, the auditor, and the user and recommends the user play an increased role in this process. The user should be allowed to analyze the quality of the auditor and audit process based upon five critical factors that should be required to be disclosed by the auditor. This paper discusses the five factors and how each one could benefit the …
