I would like to commend the Swiss Government and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) for launching the Financial Sector Strengthening Program (FSSP). I believe that the lack of adequate human and institutional capacity, shortage of local expertise and weak coordination among the various stakeholders are indeed the factors inhibiting the growth of microfinance sector in Pakistan. The initiative taken by SDC to overcome these constraints is therefore both timely and appropriate. But I do expect that once the FSSP has successfully demonstrated the business model for capacity building it will be adapted and internalized by our own …

It is well-known and generally accepted that all undeveloped land in New England cannot forever be protected from development; nor would this be a desirable goal, as continued economic development and population growth are near certainties. For these and other reasons, private land trusts and government agencies generally use explicit criteria to prioritize their land acquisition activities and prospects.

CRIF Seminar series

Greater instability in a country's list of top corporations is associated with faster economic growth. This faster growth is primarily due to faster growth in total factor productivity in industrialized countries, and faster capital accumulation in developing countries. These findings are consistent with the view that economic growth is more closely tied to the rise of new large firms than to the prosperity of established large firms. Although a stable list of leading corporations is highly correlated with government size, it is unrelated to other possible policy goals, such as (successful) income equalization and avoiding economic crises, it is related …
