Some Loans Are More Equal Than Others: Third-Party Originations And Defaults In The Subprime Mortgage Industry, William P. Alexander, Scott D. Grimshaw, Grant R. Mcqueen, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2003

Some Loans Are More Equal Than Others: Third-Party Originations And Defaults In The Subprime Mortgage Industry, William P. Alexander, Scott D. Grimshaw, Grant R. Mcqueen, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

We show how agency problems between lenders (principals) and third-party originators (TPO; agents) imply that TPO-originated loans are more likely to default than similar retail-originated loans. The nature of the agency problem is that TPOs are compensated for writing loans, but are not completely held accountable for the subsequent performance of those loans. Using a hazard model with jointly estimated competing risks and unobserved heterogeneity, we find empirical support for the TPO/default prediction using individual fixedrate subprime loans with first liens secured by residential real estate originated between January 1, 1996, and December 31, 1998. We find that apparently equal …

Are All Rivals Affected Equally By Bond Rating Downgrades?, Gary L. Caton, Jeremy Goh Jan 2003

Are All Rivals Affected Equally By Bond Rating Downgrades?, Gary L. Caton, Jeremy Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We use revisions in analysts' earnings forecasts to examine how the bad news associated with a bond rating downgrade gets transferred from the downgraded company to its rivals. In general, we find that stock analysts revise their earnings expectations downward for rivals of companies with downgraded debt. However, the significance of the revision is limited to rivals of downgraded companies with non-investment grade debt only. For the rivals of companies with investment grade debt, we find no significant forecast revisions. We hypothesize that this differential impact is due to differing levels of market visibility. This is consistent with our finding …

A New Node Centroid Algorithm For Bandwidth Minimization, Brian Rodrigues, F. Xiao, A. Lim Jan 2003

A New Node Centroid Algorithm For Bandwidth Minimization, Brian Rodrigues, F. Xiao, A. Lim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We propose a Node Centroid method with Hill-Climbing to solve the well-known matrix band-width minimization problem, which is to permute rows and columns of the matrix to minimize its bandwidth. Many heuristics have been developed for this NP-complete problem including the Cuthill-McKee (CM) and the Gibbs, Poole and Stockmeyer (GPS) algorithms. Recently, heuristics such as Simulated Annealing, Tabu Search and GRASP have been used, where Tabu Search and the GRASP with Path Relinking have achieved significantly better solution quality than the CM and GPS algorithms. Experimentation shows that the Node Centroid method achieves the best solution quality when compared with …

The Integrated Networks Model: Explaining Resource Allocations In Network Markets, Judy K. Frels, Tasadduq Shervani, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava Jan 2003

The Integrated Networks Model: Explaining Resource Allocations In Network Markets, Judy K. Frels, Tasadduq Shervani, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The last decade has witnessed a shift from a focus on the value created by a single firm and product to an examination of the value created by networks of firms (or product ecosystems) in which assets are comingled with external entities. The authors examine these market-based assets in the context of network markets and propose an Integrated Networks model in which three types of networks-user, complements, and producer-add value or enhance the attractiveness of the associated focal product. The authors empirically test the proposed model by surveying information technology professionals on their resource allocation decisions regarding the Unix and …

The Use Of Rewards To Increase And Decrease Trust: Mediating Processes And Differential Effects, Donald L. Ferrin, Kurt T. Dirks Jan 2003

The Use Of Rewards To Increase And Decrease Trust: Mediating Processes And Differential Effects, Donald L. Ferrin, Kurt T. Dirks

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Hypotheses asserting that reward structures - an omnipresent element of the work context - have a strong influence on interpersonal trust are tested, and the cognitive and behavioral routes through which the effects may occur are explored. Specifically, attribution theory is used to identify several core processes including social perception, self-perception, and attributional biases that may explain trust development. A 3 x 2 experimental design in a problem-solving task was used to examine the hypotheses. The results suggest that reward structures have a strong influence on trust, and that the effect is mediated by causal schemas, suspicion effects, and self-perception. …

Developmental Financial Institutions As Technology Policy Instruments: Implications For Innovation And Entrepreneurship In Emerging Economies, Gerard George, Ganesh N. Prabhu Jan 2003

Developmental Financial Institutions As Technology Policy Instruments: Implications For Innovation And Entrepreneurship In Emerging Economies, Gerard George, Ganesh N. Prabhu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Developmental financial institutions (DFIs) in emerging economies regularly assess new technology platforms to support their investments in new ventures, established firms, and technology institutions (TIs). Their financing decisions are guided by national priorities such as achieving technological self-reliance. By providing attractive financing options and related support, DFIs are well placed to consciously channel finance into designated priority technology areas. To better understand DFI roles, we conducted multiple interviews with participants affiliated with DFIs, firms and TIs in India. From data gathered from these interviews and secondary data on DFIs in emerging economies, we develop a preliminary framework to suggest that …

Barriers To Participation In Educational Programs As Perceived By First-Time Enrolling Freshmen In Higher Education, Julie Cason Mcdonald Jan 2003

Barriers To Participation In Educational Programs As Perceived By First-Time Enrolling Freshmen In Higher Education, Julie Cason Mcdonald

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Institutions of higher education face exceptional challenges in today’s environment. College costs are increasing, funding is decreasing and/or limited, public confidence is diminishing, the work-place is changing, and a shrinking pool of traditional-age college students exists. This creates an environment where colleges and universities find themselves competing for students. So that these institutions of higher education may better understand how to recruit, advise, and retain students, one must consider the barriers first-time freshmen encounter in the pursuit of formal learning as they enter college. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to determine the perceived barriers to educational participation held …

The Influence Of Selected Factors On Burnout Among Faculty In Higher Education, Ronald R. Rush Jan 2003

The Influence Of Selected Factors On Burnout Among Faculty In Higher Education, Ronald R. Rush

The purpose of this study was to explore demographic variables and job satisfaction and the relationship with burnout among higher education faculty. The sample included 248 tenured professors selected through simple random sampling techniques. A three-part instrument was used: the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-ES), which measured levels of burnout based on subscales of Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment; the Job Descriptive Index (JDI) and Job in General (JIG) scales, which indicated job satisfaction in areas of: Work on Present Job, Present Pay, Opportunities for Promotion, Supervision on Present Job, People in Present Job, and Job in General; and, a …

Parent And Child Perspectives Of Family Leisure Involvement And Satisfaction With Family Life, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Bryan P. Mccormick Jan 2003

Parent And Child Perspectives Of Family Leisure Involvement And Satisfaction With Family Life, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Bryan P. Mccormick

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family leisure involvement and satisfaction with family life. The sample consisted of 179 families. Data were analyzed at the parent, child, and family level. Findings indicated that family leisure involvement was the strongest multivariate predictor of family satisfaction from the parent perspective, but was not a significant multivariate predictor from the child's perspective. At the family level of measurement, only the block including Core and Balance family leisure variables explained a significant portion of the variance in family satisfaction. History of divorce was a negative multivariate predictor of family …

Agronomic And Molecular Characterization Of Louisiana Native Spartina Alterniflora Accessions, Alicia Beatriz Ryan Jan 2003

Agronomic And Molecular Characterization Of Louisiana Native Spartina Alterniflora Accessions, Alicia Beatriz Ryan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coastal erosion and wetland deterioration are serious and widespread problems affecting Louisiana’s coastal zone. The application of agronomic and molecular techniques for improving crop species is well documented. However, these have not been routinely applied to species of ecological and environmental value. Spartina alterniflora is used extensively for shoreline protection and tidal marsh restoration because of its aggressive spreading habit and tolerance to salinity. The progress of marsh revegetation projects is limited by the costs and labor associated with vegetative propagation of Spartina. Hence, a breeding program was initiated to develop improved smooth cordgrass accessions with superior seed producing ability …

Cross-Cultural Construct Validation Of The Learning Transfer System Inventory In Tawian, Hsin-Chih Chen Jan 2003

Cross-Cultural Construct Validation Of The Learning Transfer System Inventory In Tawian, Hsin-Chih Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Human Resource Development has historically made a large contribution to Taiwan's economic growth. Organizations in Taiwan perceive training as one of their top priorities to maintain their competitive advantage. Although many organizations have spent considerable money on training, there has been a lack of a comprehensive, generalizable, psychometrically-sound instrument to investigate transfer of learning in Taiwan. This study cross-culturally validated the constructs of the Learning Transfer System Inventory (LTSI) for use in Taiwan. By doing so, HRD practitioners in Taiwan can benefit by having an instrument to diagnose intervening variables and improve individual performance. The LTSI was translated through a …

Market Timing And Cost Of Capital Of The Firm, Kyojik Song Jan 2003

Market Timing And Cost Of Capital Of The Firm, Kyojik Song

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Graham and Harvey’s (2001) survey evidence and Baker, Greenwood, and Wurgler (2003) indicate that firm managers try to time debt markets based on term spreads or excess bond returns when choosing the maturity of new debt issues. Whether debt market timing increases firm value via a reduced cost of capital is an empirical question. I examine differences in firm value across non-timers and timers, where timers are defined as firms that follow either a naïve strategy of choosing long-term debt when the term premium is low or a complex strategy from Baker et al. (2003) based on the predictability of …

Two Essays On Corporate Hedging: The Choice Of Instruments And Methods, Pinghsun Huang Jan 2003

Two Essays On Corporate Hedging: The Choice Of Instruments And Methods, Pinghsun Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines corporate use of derivative instruments and multi-period hedging methods. It studies the use of linear (e.g. futures) and nonlinear (e.g. options) derivatives in a sample of 382 U.S. non-financial firms (920 firm-year observations) between 1992 and 1996. It also measures the performance of stacked hedge techniques with applications to three investment assets (heating oil, light crude oil, and unleaded gasoline) and to three commercial commodities (British Pound, Deutsche Mark, and Swiss Franc). In a stacked hedge, corporations hedge the long-term exposures by repeatedly rolling nearby futures contracts until settlement. Analyzing the 382 firms, I find that both …

Competitiveness And Price Convergence On The Internet: Evidence From The Online Dvd Market, Xiaolin Xing, Fang Fang Tang, Zhenlin Yang Jan 2003

Competitiveness And Price Convergence On The Internet: Evidence From The Online Dvd Market, Xiaolin Xing, Fang Fang Tang, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

We compare the pricing behavior between online branches of traditional retailers (MCR) and pure Internet retailers (Dotcom) in the DVD market. Based on a set of panel data from July 5, 2000 to June 11, 2001, we find that the average price of the MCRs is about 11.2% higher than that of the Dotcoms. Further statistical analyses on the market dynamics of price trends show that the prices of the Dotcoms went up with time much faster than the prices of the MCRs, which points to a possibility that eventually both types of retailers may charge similar prices on average. …

An Evaluation Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Individual Change And Its Implications For Human Resource Development, Susan R. Madsen Jan 2003

An Evaluation Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Individual Change And Its Implications For Human Resource Development, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Change is the basis for improving and expanding individual, group, and organizational effectiveness, performance, and learning. However, HRD has utilized and developed few empirically validated individual change models or theories. Because HRD is a multidisciplinary in nature, it is important for researchers and practitioners to consider what models or theories others have to offer. One influential model from the health and medical field that has promising utility in HRD is the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of individual change. The purpose of this article is to introduce this model and explore its application to HRD. This article uses Dubin’s criteria for theory-building …

Efficient Estimation Of Conditional Asset-Pricing Models, Douglas J. Hodgson, Keith Vorkink Jan 2003

Efficient Estimation Of Conditional Asset-Pricing Models, Douglas J. Hodgson, Keith Vorkink

Faculty Publications

A semiparametric efficient estimation procedure is developed for the parameters of multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity-in-mean models when the disturbances have a conditional distribution assumed to be elliptically symmetric but otherwise unrestricted. Under highlevel assumptions, the resulting estimator achieves the asymptotic semiparametric efficiency bound. The elliptical symmetry assumption allows us to avert the curse of dimensionality problem that would otherwise arise in estimating the unknown error distribution. This framework is suitable for the estimation and testing of conditional asset-pricing models, such as the conditional capital asset-pricing model. We apply our procedure in an empirical study of stock prices, with Monte …

Trust And The Decision To Outsource: Affective Responses And Cognitive Processes, Mark Hansen, J.L. Morrow Jr. Jan 2003

Trust And The Decision To Outsource: Affective Responses And Cognitive Processes, Mark Hansen, J.L. Morrow Jr.

Faculty Publications

Many of the various forms of cooperative strategy that firms are pursuing in today’s economy entail the placing of important business functions in the hands of a partner. This paper examines the role of trust in the decision by a producer to place the marketing function in the hands of another entity, namely a cooperative. Although others have studied the effect of what may be termed general trust on inter-organizational relationships, few have examined the antecedents of that trust. We propose a model in which affective responses and cognitive processes are precursors to a sense of general trust, which, in …
