Effects Of Three Types Of Free-Stall Surfaces On Preferences And Stall Usage By Dairy Cows, Cassandra B. Tucker, Daniel M. Weary, David Fraser
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
One important criterion in choosing appropriate housing systems for dairy cattle is that the freestall provides a comfortable surface for the cow. This paper describes two experiments testing the effects of commonly used lying surfaces on stall preference and stall usage by Holstein cows. In both experiments, 12 cows were housed individually in separate pens. Each pen contained three free stalls with a different surface: deep-bedded sawdust, deep-bedded sand, and a geotextile mattress covered with 2 to 3 cm of sawdust. The purpose of this study was to introduce a new construct that would assist in understanding employee attitudes and behaviors in hospitality sector jobs. The research justifies job-esteem as a unique construct worthy of further study. Job-esteem is defined as the level of respect and dignity as individual believes is associated with his/her job. An instrument measuring an employee's level of job-esteem was developed and administered. Tests show the instrument meets reliability standards.

As scholars/researches strive to measure and describe the influence and growth of HRD in academic settings, it is important to consider the HRD curriculum taught within various schools, departments, degrees, and programs. This study located U.S. business school undergraduate and graduate HR programs, analyzed the general HRD curriculum, and compared selected training and organization development course descriptions between schools of education and business. Evidence suggests HRD has and continues to influence business-related HR academic programs.

This thesis focuses on foreign direct investment (FDI) as a unique form of international technology transfer (ITT). The geographical scope of the study is narrowed to the case of developing countries. Especially, Egypt is taken up as a case study of a middle-income country representative of the wide spectrum of Southern countries. Perspectives On Radioactive Waste Disposal: A Consideration Of Economic Efficiency And Intergenerational Equity, Helen R. Neill, Robert H. Neill

There are both internal and external pressures on the U.S. Department of Energy to reduce the estimated costs of isolating radioactive waste, $19 billion for transuranic waste at Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and $57 billion for high level waste at Yucca Mountain. The question arises whether economic analyses would add to the decision-making process to reduce costs yet maintain the same level of radiological protection. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of using cost-benefit analysis (CBA), a tool used to measure economic efficiency as an input for these decisions. Stimulating Firm-Specific Investment Through Risk Management, Heli Wang, Jay B. Barney, Jeffrey J. Reuer

This article suggests a rationale for firm risk management that has been largely ignored in financial economics literature. It presents an argument for harnessing the influence of a company’s stakeholders who, whether as employees, suppliers or customers, make a valuable investment specific to the company. Such investments are crucial for a firm’s competitive advantage, yet because they are firm-specific and therefore cannot be transformed or transferred, stakeholders are often concerned about the risks involved in making them. A company’s efforts to manage risk can therefore persuade stakeholders to make even greater firm-specific investments, bringing benefits to shareholders and stakeholders alike.

The Chinese software industry is small and underdeveloped, compared with its computer and other information technology (IT) hardware industry and compared with India’s software industry. Yet, current status is not necessarily a good guide to future prospects, as China’s recent history amply demonstrates. An important difference between the Chinese and Indian software sectors is the former’s close links to domestic users, notably industrial and commercial users. This has fostered intensive learning in the area of product development for a large and rapidly growing domestic market. Tourism is an information intensive activity and the generation, gathering, processing, application and communication of information are vitally important for day-to-day operations (Buhalis, 1994). Tourists rely on a wealth of information before making a decision (Horan and MacDonaill 1996).
