This paper examines the impact of electronic commerce on business-level strategies. The paper examines electronic commerce (E.C) from the perspective of intra-business E.C., business-to-business E.C., business-to-consumer E.C., and value/supply chain management. Business-level strategies are considered to include: added-value, differentiation, cost leadership, focus, and growth source. The paper concludes that E-commerce will have significant impacts on each of the business-level strategic areas.

The main focus of this charrette -- the stature of urban redevelopment relative to suburban "greenfield" development -- was epitomized by two Cleveland-area newspaper items (see Appendix A). One item announced an $850,000 federal grant to a suburb located at the rural fringe of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The grant from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce was for construction of a road that would open 250 acres of virgin land for industrial development.

Index options have been one of the most successful of the many innovative financial instruments introduced over the last few decades, as their high trading volume indicates. Given their prominence, the pricing efficiency of these markets is of great importance. ; Detecting inefficient pricing, or mispricing, requires comparing a theoretically efficient price with prices of options traded in financial markets. One popular approach to deriving pricing relationships is based on a principle called no-arbitrage, which simply assumes that arbitrageurs enter the market and quickly eliminate mispricing if a profit opportunity without risk exists. In June 2000, the Supreme Court held in Crosby v. National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) that federal sanctions against Burma preempted the Massachusetts Burma law. With its "Burma Law," Massachusetts sought to replicate the anti-Apartheid boycott, one of the most successful human rights campaigns in history. Massachusetts' Burma law authorized state agencies to exercise a strong purchasing preference in favor of companies that do not conduct business in Burma unless the preference would impair essential purchases or result in inadequate competition.

The purpose of this study is to examine the adequacy of benefits provided by the Employees Provident Fund to its members. A sample of 21,722 members who have attained the age of 54 years and actively contributing to the fund were selected for the study. The study shows that the old age retirement benefit scheme provided by the Employees Provident Fund to its members is grossly inadequate and does not meet to the standard established by the I LO convention No.102 of 1952 on replacement income retirees. This study examines the relationship between ownership structure and corporation performance on 100 Malaysian public-listed companies from 1993 to 1997. We first investigate the effect of ownership concentration on corporate performance, as measured by return on equity, market to book value ratio and return on assets. Further, we extend our analysis by examining the relation between insider ownership and the three accounting ratios. The results showed no significant relationship between ownership concentration or insider ownership and corporate performance for the selected corporations in 1993 - 1997. This paper investigates the effect of entrepreneurs' personal income tax situations on the growth rate of their enterprises. We analyze the personal income tax returns of a large number of sole proprietors before and after the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and determine how the substantial reductions in marginal tax rates associated with that law affected the growth of their firms as measured by gross receipts. We find that individual income taxes exert a statistically and quantitatively significant influence on firm growth rates. Raising the sole proprietor's tax price (one minus the marginal tax rate) by 10 percent increases receipts …

The Impact Of Hospital Quality-Related Practices On Health Outcomes, Deborah A. Freund, Frank R. Lichtenberg

In this paper we analyze the cross-sectional relationship between hospital quality scores calculated by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and risk-adjusted indicators of outcomes and quality--mortality, rates of surgical/medical misadventures, adverse drug reactions, and length of stay--calculated from Nationwide Inpatient Sample discharge records. The results suggest that greater adherence to JCAHO accreditation standards is not associated with reduced mortality or lower probability of avoidable hospital or physician-caused adverse outcomes. Other hospital characteristics, such as teaching/non-teaching and urban/rural status, also exhibit little or no correlation with risk-adjusted survival and adverse-event probabilities.

Further, the study implies that minority entrepreneurs are a special breed of entrepreneur, combining personal, professional, and financial success with that of shared-identity peers. The tenets of relationship marketing are useful in understanding the success of a service provider. Based on a sample of 221 firms in Singapore that use ocean freight shipping services, examines service recovery issues related to satisfaction. It was found that service recovery methods such as claims handling, problem handling and complaint handling are associated with the level of satisfaction of customers. In addition, interfacing departments also have varying association with levels of satisfaction of customers.
