Gender Bias In Management : A Case Study In Employees Provident Fund (Epf), Ushabhanu Suppiah

Student Works (2000-2009)

The development in this day and age is extremely drastic. Tremendous growth is seen in all sectors of industries to match the rapidly changing needs of society. This change is also coupled with rapid technological advancement. In order to meet these developments the labour market should continue to experience growth as well. This is because in most sectors its most valuable asset in an organization is its human resources. And as such special attention needs to be given to this area of management. An in depth look at the breakdown of labour force indicates an almost equal number each gender …

A Strategic Analysis Of Powder Coating Industry In Malaysia : A Case Study Of Ici-Nof Powder Coatings (M) Sdn. Bhd, Meng San Tay

Student Works (2000-2009)

The powder coating industry in Malaysia has increasingly replaced the traditional liquid paints in metal-based industries due to its environmental friend liness, governmental legislation and improved technology. The powder coating industry had grown steadily in the early 1990's in tandem with the Malaysian economic performance. The high growth rate of the industry has attracted new entrants to set up manufacturing plants in the country. However, the unprecedented currency crisis in 1997 has drastically reduced the market size and demand. Faced with an overcapacity scenario, the players are scrambling for market shares by competing heavily in price. The research aims to …

A Decision Technology System To Advance The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya Jan 2000

A Decision Technology System To Advance The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Breast Cancer, Guisseppi A. Forgionne, Aryya Gangopadhyay, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Geographical variations in cancer rates have been observed for decades. Described spatial patterns and trends have provided clues for generating hypotheses about the etiology of cancer. For breast cancer, investigators have demonstrated that some variation can be explained by differences in the population distribution of known breast cancer risk factors such as menstrual and reproductive variables (Laden, Spiegelman, and Neas, 1997; Robbins, Bescianini, and Kelsey, 1997; Sturgeon, Schairer, and Gail, 1995). However, regional patterns also may reflect the effects of Workshop on Hormones, Hormone Metabolism, Environment, and Breast Cancer (1995): (a) environmental hazards (such as air and water pollution), (b) …

Marketing To Hispanics, Jodi Marucheck Jan 2000

Marketing To Hispanics, Jodi Marucheck

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

As Hispanics become more and more visible in the United States, businesses need to recognize this group of consumers as the valuable asset it is. Hispanics are becoming better educated, which leads to higher paying jobs and more buying power. What companies need to realize, though, is that it takes a sincere effort to reach this unique consumer group. Translating the general advertising campaign into Spanish is not sufficient enough to gain this group's loyalty. Companies need to appeal directly to the values and culture of Hispanics in America if they expect to add them to their clientele base. Before …

Corrections To Rule-Based Forecasting: Findings From A Replication, Monica Adya Jan 2000

Corrections To Rule-Based Forecasting: Findings From A Replication, Monica Adya

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Rule-Based Forecasting (RBF) is an expert system that combines forecasts from simple extrapolation methods based on features of time series. In this study, we provide corrections to ten of the 99 rules contained in RBF. These corrections were identified during a replication of RBF. Empirical comparisons indicate that the corrections did not lead to a noticeable improvement in accuracy when tested against some of the original data. However, in light of the fact that several studies are extending the work on RBF, it is important to report on these corrections to RBF.

The Impact On Ipo Assurance Fees Of Commercial Bank Entry Into The Equity Underwriting Market, Neil L. Fargher, L. Paige Fields, Michael S. Wilkins Jan 2000

The Impact On Ipo Assurance Fees Of Commercial Bank Entry Into The Equity Underwriting Market, Neil L. Fargher, L. Paige Fields, Michael S. Wilkins

School of Business Faculty Research

Changes in the provisions of the United States Banking Act of 1933 have allowed the entry of commercial banks into the initial public offering (IPO) underwriting market. In this paper, we examine the effect of commercial bank equity underwriting on the fees paid to auditors. We predict that IPO assurance fees will be higher for equity offerings underwritten by commercial banks than for offerings handled by traditional underwriters because (1) commercial banks are relatively inexperienced in bringing firms public, requiring additional assistance from accounting firms in the IPO process; (2) new entrants into the underwriting market may manage lower quality …

Office Rent Determinants During Market Decline And Recovery, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2000

Office Rent Determinants During Market Decline And Recovery, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

This article empirically examines office rent determinants in distinct periods of a market cycle. The study uses a dataset of office properties located in a large metropolitan area and spanning a six-year period. During this period, office rents experienced a significant decline and recovery. A time-varying parameter rent index identifies three distinct periods of the cycle: decline, trough and recovery. Tests of structural change conclude that market participants value the determinants of office rents differently during the periods. A microexamination of each rent determinant over the periods of the market cycle provides a greater understanding of how rents vary over …

The Professional Development School : A Descriptive Case Study Of Its History And Development, Denise G. Michaelis

Problem. The development o f school/university partnerships is not a simple process. It requires collaboration between two groups o f professionals who come from different cultures, have developed different forms o f expertise, and operate under different organizational conditions and reward structures (Goodlad, 1990; Stoddart, Winitzky & O ’Keefe, 1992). Throughout much o f the last century, collaboration between schools and universities have often been unsuccessful. In order for Professional Development Schools to be successful in educational reform, it is necessary to focus on defining and delineating the essential characteristics of Professional Development Schools and the process o f their …

Leadership Requirements In The 21st Century : The Perceptions Of Canadian Private Sector Leaders, Samy H. Watson Jan 2000

Leadership Requirements In The 21st Century : The Perceptions Of Canadian Private Sector Leaders, Samy H. Watson

Dissertations

Problem. Since 1995, with the realization that by 2005 more than 61% of executives in the senior ranks of the Canadian Public Service would be eligible for retirement (La Releve, 1998), the need to recruit and develop competent leaders has become a matter of urgent attention.

Method. Public sector leaders were surveyed by mail-in questionnaires as to their ratings of a set of leadership competencies. Analogue research for private sector leaders, conducted by a colleague, was incorporated for some analysis. A stratified sample of the general public was also surveyed by telephone regarding a subset of the same competencies. …

The Influence Of Cognitive Make-Up On New Venture Success, Matthew H. Roy, B. Elango Jan 2000

The Influence Of Cognitive Make-Up On New Venture Success, Matthew H. Roy, B. Elango

WCBT Faculty Publications

One of the major challenges in the development of a new venture is the need for different thinking styles over time. The growing body of research on entrepreneurship has largely ignored the influence of cognition during the evolution of the new venture. In this paper, we develop a conceptual model which shows how cognitive make-up may influence the success of the new venture growth process. This line of inquiry may prove fruitful in explaining why many creative ideas and once successful ventures fail to succeed. Also, matching task demands and thinking styles should increase entrepreneurial satisfaction and the chances of …

A Study Of Australian Managers' Perceptions Of The Internet, Roman Vargha Jan 2000

A Study Of Australian Managers' Perceptions Of The Internet, Roman Vargha

Theses : Honours

Despite its young age the Internet has grown to become a significant new medium for businesses and their customers. The existing literature suggests that some businesses are not going on-line whilst others are: embracing the new technology, but as yet little research has been conducted as to the reasons for this difference in take-up rate. Even less research has been conducted from an Australian perspective, with most research originating in the United States. This preliminary study explored the differing perceptions of eight Perth-based managers of businesses that are on-line compared to those that are not on-line. Of particular interest was …

Reward Contingency, Unemployment, And Functional Turnover, Chuck R. Williams Jan 2000

Reward Contingency, Unemployment, And Functional Turnover, Chuck R. Williams

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Based on the valence model of expectancy theory and the Cornell model of job satisfaction, this field study investigated the relationship between reward contingency, unemployment, pay satisfaction, job satisfaction, and functional turnover. The latter of which separates turnover into four categories: poor performing leavers, good performing leavers, poor performing stayers, and good performing stayers. It was conducted with a geographically dispersed sample of sales representatives (i.e., from 25 states and 66 cities), resulting in unemployment rates that ranged from 2 percent to 12 percent. The sales representatives were employed by four companies that paid different combinations of salary and commissions, …

Distinguishing Sales Professionals From Their Marketing Counterparts: An Empirical Inquiry, Patricia Knowles, Anusorn Singhapakdi Jan 2000

Distinguishing Sales Professionals From Their Marketing Counterparts: An Empirical Inquiry, Patricia Knowles, Anusorn Singhapakdi

Marketing Faculty Publications

Sales and other marketing professionals were compared in terms of some of their demographic, socioeconomic, and psychographic characteristics. It was generally expected that sates professionals would be different from the other marketing professionals in the sample. Regarding demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, more sales than other marketing professionals were male and they were less affluent. They also had fewer years of business experience. In terms of their personal values and moral philosophies, sales professionals, despite a general consensus evidenced in many leading sales and sales management texts that they are different from other employees, are generally speaking, very similar.

Approximation Model Building For Reliability & Maintainability Characteristics Of Reusable Launch Vehicles, Resit Unal, W. Douglas Morris, Nancy H. White, Roger A. Lepsch, Richard W. Brown

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper describes the development of parametric models for estimating operational reliability and maintainability characteristics for reusable launch vehicle concepts, based on vehicle size and technology support level. A reliability and maintainability analysis tool (RMAT) and response surface methods are utilized to build parametric approximation models for rapidly estimating operational reliability and maintainability characteristics such as mission completion reliability. These models that approximate RMAT, can then be utilized for fast analysis of operational requirements, for lifecycle cost estimating and for multidisciplinary design optimization.

Exploring Persistence In Financial Time Series, David K C. Lee Jan 2000

Exploring Persistence In Financial Time Series, David K C. Lee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

If financial time series exhibits persistence or long-memory, then their unconditional probability distribution may not be normal. This has important implications for many areas in finance, especially asset pricing, option pricing, portfolio allocation and risk management. Furthermore, if the random walk does not apply, a wide range of results obtained by quantitative analysis may be inappropriate. The capital asset pricing model, the Black-Scholes option pricing formula, the concept of risk as standard deviation or volatility, and the use of Sharpe, Treynor, and other performance measures are not consistent with nonnormal distributions. Unfortunately, nonnormality is common among distributions of financial time …

Analysis Of Intangible Factors In Waste Minimization Projects, Halvard E. Nystrom, William Ralph Kehr Jan 2000

Analysis Of Intangible Factors In Waste Minimization Projects, Halvard E. Nystrom, William Ralph Kehr

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Continual population growth and rising standards of living that accelerate the consumption of limited resources, are forcing society to encourage conservation of these resources. These resources not only include raw material, but also the areas to dispose of the wastes. As a result, communities are driving industries towards waste minimization by limiting waste generation and landfill availability. Firms'' environmentally friendly strategies can gain competitive advantage by leading in environmental practices. This advantage emanates from the reduction of risk of environmental regulatory overreaction, as well as improved asset utilization and landfill utilization. However, these intangible benefits are difficult to identify and …

Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods In Cash Flow Testing Simulations, Michael Gene Hilgers Jan 2000

Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods In Cash Flow Testing Simulations, Michael Gene Hilgers

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

What actuaries call cash flow testing is a large-scale simulation pitting a company''s current policy obligation against future earnings based on interest rates. While life contingency issues associated with contract payoff are a mainstay of the actuarial sciences, modeling the random fluctuations of US Treasury rates is less studied. Furthermore, applying standard simulation techniques, such as the Monte Carlo method, to actual multi-billion dollar companies produce a simulation that can be computationally prohibitive. In practice, only hundreds of sample paths can be considered, not the usual hundreds of thousands one might expect for a simulation of this complexity. Hence, insurance …
