The application of real options analysis to information technology investment evaluation problems recently has been proposed in the IS literature by Dos Santos (1991), Kambil et al. (1993), Kumar (1996), Chalasani et al. (1997), and Taudes (1998). The research reported on in this paper illustrates the value of applying real options analysis in the context of a case study involving the deployment of point-of-sale (POS) debit services by the Yankee 24 shared electronic banking network of New England. A fundamental property of a progressive income tax is that it provides implicit insurance against shocks to income by dampening the variability of disposable income and consumption. The Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 (ERTA) in combination with the Tax Reform Act of 1986 (TRA86) greatly reduced the number of marginal tax brackets and the maximum marginal rate, which limits the stabilizing effect of the tax system on household consumption when pre-tax income fluctuates. We examine the effect of the federal income tax reforms of the 1980s on the associated degree of automatic stabilization of consumption. The empirical framework derives …

This study, the Economic Impact of Wright State University International Students on the Dayton Local Economy, examines the financial contributions of international students at both the graduate and undergraduate level to the Dayton area. The study was conducted in the fall of 1998 among 120 students drawn from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The study agrees with similar research findings. International students are a source of economic benefits in the regions where they reside. International students at Wright State University received grants and income from Dayton area residents. Consequently, it recommends that universities should take steps to recruit and retain …

In 1974, voters in the state of Ohio approved the institution of a lottery as a means to raise funds for their public primary and secondary schools. According to the legislative history of the Ohio Lottery, the purpose for the lottery is to provide a means for relatively poor school districts to enhance their own local tax base such that more public school funds could be produced locally to meet the special needs of their primary and secondary schools. This Article posits a two prong approach to the on-sale bar. First, for the anticipatory version, the courts should expressly incorporate the law of enablement under 35 U.S.C. § 112 and of utility under 35 U.S.C. § 101 into the on-sale bar, thus providing a well-known body of law to promote predictability. Procedurally, the courts should establish a hierarchy of evidence, similar to the approach used in claim construction, that considers certain, more readily available information as the most pertinent while eschewing the use of expert testimony and other litigation based evidence. Examines non-linear adaptation to change in the high-technology environment of the computer industry. These environments are defined, and the efficacy of different organizational adaptations is assessed with respect to these environments. Results from our analyses show that there is a direct and causal relationship between the employment of non-linear organizational archetypes and organizational effectiveness within high-technology industries.

A Case Study Comparing The Price Of Fresh Produce Sold At Farmers’ Markets And Chain Supermarkets, James J. Ahern, Marianne Mcgarry Wolf

This exploratory research found that produce purchased at San Luis Obispo County, California farmers’ markets to be an apparent better value than supermarket produce. Prices for most commodities were either the same or lower and the product quality was better at times than the same product offered at the paired supermarket. Fourteen commodities were examined at six farmers’ markets locations, over half of those in the county, conducted across all four seasons in 1999.

Estimating The Off-Farm Labor Supply In Canada, Wayne Howard, Michael Swidinsky

Off-farm labor supply in Canada is modeled using separate off-farm labor participation and off-farm labor supply equations, which allows variables to affect participation and labor supply differently. The data used in this study are from Statistics Canada’s Agriculture-Population Linkage Database, which links the Population Census for 1986 to a 20% sample from the Census of Agriculture. Results indicate that age, education and wages have large, significant and opposite effects on participation and supply, and that government efforts to stabilize and supplement farm incomes through rural employment programs may have less effect on labor allocation decisions than do the underlying demographic …

Numerous empirical investigations have attempted to study the relationship between multinationality and firm performance. Results from these studies have produced conflicting findings about this relationship. It is argued that one of the causes of the conflicting findings may be an imprecise conceptualization of multinationality. A multidimensional conceptualization is proposed based on a methodological review of previous research.

The author discusses his involvement in developing computational finance software. These computational finance models attempt to model the randomness of a stock's price. At a fixed future time, a stock's price is modeled as a random variable with a normal distribution centered about the current price adjusted with a simple growth multiplier. The standard deviation of this normal distribution depends on the length of time into the future one peers and the volatility of the market. Student Withdrawal: Test Of An Integrated Model, Gary A. Adams, Ron Marks, Jeff Allen

This study examined a model of student withdrawal that integrated the major elements of Tinto's (1975) Student Integration Model and Bean's (1982, 1983) Industrial Model of Student Attrition. In a sample of 315 college freshman, the results of a path analysis indicated that both social and academic integration were related to satisfaction but only academic integration was related to commitment. Neither social nor academic integration had significant direct effects on intention to withdraw. Further, of the two attitudinal variables, satisfaction was related to intention to withdraw, however, commitment was not. These findings support the integrated model of student withdrawal.

The response of our defense industrial base to major changes, such as the collapse of the former Soviet Union, emphasize the need to continue to improve the way the United States buys weapon systems. By looking through a historical lens, this paper addresses predicting the long-term success of acquisition practices and reform initiatives for the cost community. A literature review identifies acquisition reform legislation and initiatives since World War II. Looking at past acquisition reform and their long term impacts leads to the conclusion that acquisition reform efforts must be viewed skeptically. While data mining has become a much-lauded tool in business and related fields, its role in the healthcare arena is still being explored. Currently, most applications of data mining in healthcare can be categorized into two areas: decision support for clinical practice, and policy planning/decision making. However, it is challenging to find empirical literature in this area since a substantial amount of existing work in data mining for health care is conceptual in nature. In this paper, we review the challenges that limit the progress made in this area and present considerations for the future of data mining in healthcare.
