An enduring tension in the study of institutions is between the micro level of agents’ activities that shape institutions and the macro level of institutions as enduring entities that tend to resist change. Institutions in crisis offer opportunities to look at urgent and adaptive changes. I study an Islamic organization that is representative of a religious institution, which has deep traditions and meaningfulness to its members. In a time of crisis, in the urban area in the United States where it is located, the organization is pressed by external parties, such as government, media, and leaders from other religions, to …

Economic Analysis Of Solar Investment In An Agricultural Setting, Morgan King Dec 2023

Economic Analysis Of Solar Investment In An Agricultural Setting, Morgan King

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Robust financial modelling is critical for evaluating solar investments in agricultural applications. Agricultural producers with electricity-intensive systems (especially poultry houses but also, for example, irrigation pumps) face monthly electricity bills in the thousands of dollars. Further, volatile electricity bills, because of uncertain electric rate inflation, add to financial risk as utility costs make up a large portion of operating costs. While solar panels reduce input cost risk with certain installation cost up front, producers are hesitant to invest given long payback periods, uncertainty about the future of net metering, and high financial leverage. To enable producers to accurately assess the …

The Intersection Of Employee Engagement And Employee Health: A Quantitative Evaluation Of The Use Of Engagement Tactics In Improving The Health Of A Workforce, Andrew Buffenbarger

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Employers have a vested interest in the health of employees, but employee wellness programs have not proven themselves an effective tactic for employers to motivate employees to live healthier lives. Employees who suffer from chronic disease are less productive than healthier peers, are more expensive to insure, have higher rates of absenteeism, and are more prone to suffer from performance-reducing levels of stress and burnout (Shuck et al., 2021; Jones et al., 2019; Mattke et al., 2013). The problem is that employee wellness programs are often not effective at improving the health of employee populations (Song & Baicker, 2019; Jones …

Understanding Multi-Platforming Behavior, Jennifer Large

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this research is to develop a comprehensive understanding of multi-platforming behavior (MPB), which refers to the use of multiple platforms within the same class. While MPB is defined here, the exact nature of this behavior remains a central question addressed in this research. The increasing prevalence of consumers using multiple platforms (ComScore, 2017) necessitates a deeper understanding of usage complexity (Burton-jones et al., 2017) and the value that platforms hold for consumers (McIntyre & Srinivasan, 2017). Consumers evaluate the portfolio of platforms they use when making usage decisions. Examining comparative usage between platforms has implications for both …
