Bank Advertising In Principles And Practice, Dan R. Meurer May 1931

Bank Advertising In Principles And Practice, Dan R. Meurer

Bachelors’ Theses

The express purpose of this thesis is to present, systematically, the results of the author’s investigation into the actual methods of bank advertising practice, and of his research into the writings of the best authorities on this subject. The general plan is to consider only authentic information and viewpoints for each phase of the advertising program and to compare and contrast actual methods used with these ideals.

Bank advertising is boundless in its scope, charged, as it is, with educating the public in financial matters and selling banking services. Because these services are practically infinite in variation, banks have been …

Cost Accounting For Marketing, Frederick J. Bohling May 1931

Cost Accounting For Marketing, Frederick J. Bohling

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis, "Marketing Coat Accounting," is to present the theory underlying the application of ·the principles developed in production costing to the field of sales costing. Distribution coating is a relatively new function of cost accounting, most of the discussion of it having occurred since 1925. Consequently there is little history to recite, except that many firms have introduced sales costing methods with satisfactory and highly successful results.

Because of the frequent lack of sympathy between the accounting and sales departments, a brief outline ·of our present-day marketing organization is presented in order that the accountant may …

Advertising Appeals Used By Car Manufacturers For Three Representative Years, Robery J. Slaby

Poster Advertising As A Modern Marketing Force, William F. Lukas May 1930

Poster Advertising As A Modern Marketing Force, William F. Lukas

Bachelors’ Theses

Poster advertising is today one of the major advertising mediums, but it has earned itself a bad name because of the poor beginning it had in this country. In order to dispel the mal-impressions that have arisen and are at present in the minds of numerous people throughout the United States, I have here attempted to take up the matter in detail, showing the good points and the bad points as fairly as possible, and drawing my conclusions threfrom. Many of the sections are not a fair viewpoint of the matter because of the difficulty of obtaining convincing material on …

The Economics Of Housing Projects, Margaret Mary Rogers May 1930

The Economics Of Housing Projects, Margaret Mary Rogers

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis, "The Economics of Housing Projects", I have tried to bring together analytical material in relation to representative methods of relief for the crowded and wretched conditions of the working classes. Various systems have been tried in many countries and both England and Germany are far in advance of the United States in this experiment. It was impossible to examine every type of project in this study so I have confined myself to several types in the United States. I have also examined Vienna's experiment in post-war reconstruction since it has been called, by authorities on the subject, …

Appeals In Advertising, Bess Epstein May 1930

Appeals In Advertising, Bess Epstein

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis, the writer studied the appeals of advertising and the psychology that lies behind them. An attempt was made to dis cover what the appeals are based on and the processes that are related to the presentation of the appeals.

The different chapters of the books, given in the Bibliography, were read and notes taken on everything read. From the material thus com piled, opinions were assorted and wherever necessary, differences in opinion were mentioned. Whatever was believed to need explanation was made clearer by taking examples from the Saturday Evening Post.

This thesis was written with the …

The Ethics Of Advertising, Richard H. Derry Apr 1930

The Ethics Of Advertising, Richard H. Derry

Bachelors’ Theses

One hundred years ago business was largely carried on within the limits or individual communities and consumers were more or less intimately acquainted with producers. At that time there was in the economic proceedure of the country a certain amount of pride in workmanship and flimsiness in products was not tolerated. When a builder erected a house he built it to last; fully realizing that any faulty construction would jeopardize his reputation as a craftsman. And so it was with practically all industries, each town having nearly a complete set of them. There were a few commodities that came from …

The Success Of Direct-By-Mail Advertising In Modern Business, J. Edward Schmidley Jun 1929

The Success Of Direct-By-Mail Advertising In Modern Business, J. Edward Schmidley

Bachelors’ Theses

The modern trend of business is distinctly toward the creation of new business instead or trying by costly competitive methods to divide up among the producers the business already created. The manufacturer must sell his products by giving them value, creating a demand and then giving the retailer aid in selling them. The savage , crushing forces or competition to- day attack more fiercely than ever before . To act at once and to act correctly is the only method to be used by manufacturers in their struggle for existence . All concerns are aggressively striving to out-do each other …

The Place Of The House Organ In The Business World, Joseph W. Berg Jun 1929

The Place Of The House Organ In The Business World, Joseph W. Berg

Bachelors’ Theses

The business of producing house organs is intimately a part of advertising and is precariously linked up with the problem of salesmanship. More generously house organs are the consolidated specialized effort of producing the wide spread use of an advertised product. It is well to consider the construction of this widely misunderstood term involving direct advertising, from the foundation of advertising in general.

Advertising is an art older than history, though in its present· forms it is rather recent. The newest of all its developments, of course, is that phase in which we are most interested since it involves the …

Export Advertising, Walter A. Haise Jun 1929

Export Advertising, Walter A. Haise

Bachelors’ Theses

There is a story of a King of Spain who, after making futile attempts to make his subjects fit a common mold so as to be easily governable, gave up his task and became a clock collector. He gathered clocks of every type, shape, and size, from the four corners of the earth. Then he set himself to the task, again a futile one, of making them all tick at exactly the same time. He failed a second time and on his deathbed said: "What a fool I was to try to make my people do what even my clocks …

The Just Price, James F. Quirk Apr 1929

The Just Price, James F. Quirk

Bachelors’ Theses

In a hearing before the Industrial Commission the president of the American Sugar Refining Company answered his inquisitors in this notable manner: "I think it is fair to get out of the consumer all you can, consistent with the business proposition." Now whether this gentleman felt that he was here laying down a canon of injustice or no, it is not our purpose at this place to discuss. But there is one thing concerning which he does not leave us in any doubt; we know how he fixes his prices-- get as much as you can. It shall be the …

The History Of The American Fruit Industry In The Caribbean, Oliver Eller Irons Jan 1929

The History Of The American Fruit Industry In The Caribbean, Oliver Eller Irons

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Caribbean countries have attracted increasing interest from students of American political history and the more their history is investigated, the more do we realize the growing significance of the role played by American capital in the development of their industries. The literature of tropical agriculture is coming to be more extensively available but until only recently has this subject received slight attention from our writers. The concentration of any attention on the fruit phase of tropical agriculture by American students of history and economics has been nearly wholly lacking, as well as receiving only scant attention from writers not …

Development Of China's Export Trade, 1901-1925, Yu Jung Huang Jun 1928

Development Of China's Export Trade, 1901-1925, Yu Jung Huang

Historical Dissertations & Theses

If we want to understand thoroughly China's future potentiality, we must give our attention to her exports. Although the Portuguese have had direct trade with China since the sixteenth century, followed by Spanish, Dutch, and British traders, and although American ships were found in the waters of South China during the early nineteenth century, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that trade with the western world was actually opened. Since that time China's foreign trade has increased rapidly, especially her exports.

Some of the dissertations and theses below reflect the time period in which they were …

Chain-Stores And Their Relation To Present Day Advertising, Marion Helene Witmer Jun 1928

Chain-Stores And Their Relation To Present Day Advertising, Marion Helene Witmer

Bachelors’ Theses

Modern distribution is becoming a science. Standardization in buying and selling goods is approaching the precision already reached in producing goods. Just as machines are used in packing food and making dresses, so are machines used to sell this food and these dresses. Efficient production is making more goods with less effort in less time. Efficient distribution is selling more goods with less effort in less time. Chain-stores form the machinery of modern distribution. Each chain is a sales factory, where every effort is directed toward making more sales per person per day. Each store or link in the chain …

Cooperative Advertising, Mary Ellenbecker Jun 1928

Cooperative Advertising, Mary Ellenbecker

Bachelors’ Theses

Cooperative, group, or association advertising is the common effort of competitors to increase their sales, improve market conditions, combat a common enemy, or in other ways to improve the industry in which they have a mutual interest by advertising.

It is an economical, effective way of influencing a market. The greatest difficulty in the way of increasing group advertising is the difficulty of organizing. To present a program to which competitors will subscribe, for joint action by individuals or firms which have habitually been antagonistic, requires a high degree of organizing ability combined with a great abundance of tact.

Should The Utah Law As It Applies To Inheritance Be Modified?, Lorenzo H. Hatch May 1928

Should The Utah Law As It Applies To Inheritance Be Modified?, Lorenzo H. Hatch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the United States, until recently, the inheritance tax has been employed principally as a war measure. The first one imposed was the stamp act of July 6, 1797, which was repealed five years later. The war revenue act of July 1, 1862, was repealed July 14 1870. The revenue act of August 27, 1894 was declared unconstitutional because of its income tax feature. The war revenue act of June 13, 1989 was repealed April 13, 1902. The present federal estate tax was formed September 8, 1916. It was later amended March 3, 1917, and was altered appreciably in the …

The Instalment Selling Plan In The United States And Its Social And Economic Consequences, Leo Frederick Barden Jun 1927

The Instalment Selling Plan In The United States And Its Social And Economic Consequences, Leo Frederick Barden

Bachelors’ Theses

Instalment Selling is a vital current problem. Assumptions and facts are presented to the reading public by proponents and opponents of the system. Opponents of instalment selling are as outspoken with their criticism as supporters are with their praise. Our trade magazines are filled with articles of such nature. "Instalment is a perverted, species of speculation and cheap money," or "Instalment is the balance wheel by which production and distribution are equally maintained." This manuscript is written with a desire to help those, who are wrestling with this economic and social problem, a problem of great significance during a period …
