Critical Study Of The Managerial Selection Practices In Malaysian Business Organisations, Zeti Sheikh Othman

An exploratory study was made on the managerial selection practices of Malaysian business organizations. The data for the study was provided by 62 business organizations comprising 22 Malaysian-owned small and medium enterprises, 26 large locally-owned corporation and 14 Malaysian-based multinational companies. Comparisons of the selection practices were made between the two categories of Malaysian local companies; between the Malaysian local companies and the multinationals, and between selection practices of the Malaysian organizations combined with the practices in the developed countries as revealed by management literature. The four diverse investment strategies, as compared to the Optimal Strategy, were tested from December 1, 1997, through January 30, 2001 Three years of daily closing price data was obtained and utilized within a simulated model. This research examined the influence of work status on attitudes and work outcomes. The two attitudes of perception of psychological contract violations, (violation of employment promise by employers) and fairness perception (fair treatment at work) were studied. This research examined the relationship between attitudes and work outcomes (organizational commitment, e.g. loyalty; organizational citizenship behavior, voluntary action done by employees for the sake of organizations and turnover intention). Individuals with family responsibility are attracted to work part-time voluntarily. Corporate downsizing has often forced individuals to go into part-time work involuntarily. This study examines the patterns of career advancement and factors affecting an individual's career advancement. Career advancement is measured using occupational mobility and income mobility. The analyses are based on 1702 young school leavers data for whom are available from the "Transition from School to Work" study, which was carried out between 1989 and 1996. It is common to change occupation or employer or both in the early stages of the career. For every two individuals, one of them changes jobs within the seven years studied. This research was carried out with two primary objectives namely to investigate the relationship between Economic Value Added (EVA) and stock returns and how it compares with conventional accounting measures in explaining stock returns. The results indicate that there is a significant positive relationship between EVA and stock returns. Although the relationship is positive, it is relatively weak. All the accounting performance measures also exhibit a positive relationship with stocks. With regards to the ability of EVA in explaining stock returns, It was better compared to any of the accounting performance measures. The best accounting measure was price earnings ratio. …
