Cold Looks And Hot Tempers: Individual-Level Effects Of Incivility In The Workplace, Shannon G. Taylor
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The deleterious effects of workplace incivility have been widely decried by practitioners and the popular press, but empirical evidence in this regard has only recently begun to accrue in the academic literature. As such, the present study examines the empirical validity of theoretically relevant attitudinal, health-related, and performance outcomes affected by workplace incivility. Hypotheses were tested with data obtained from individuals employed in a diverse range of for-profit and not-for-profit industries, organizations, and occupations and their supervisors. Results demonstrate that experiences of workplace incivility adversely affect employee attitudes and well-being; that workplace incivility experiences may indirectly affect feelings of burnout …

An Empirical Analysis Of Reputation Effects And Network Centrality In A Multi-Agency Context, Emily Jane Plant
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Signals convey information to marketplace participants regarding the unobservable quality of a product. Whenever product quality if unobservable prior to purchase, there is the risk of adverse selection. Problems of hidden information also occur in the consumer marketplace when the consumer is unable to verify the quality of a good prior to purchase. The sending, receiving, and interpretation or signals are potential ways to overcome the problem of adverse selection. In general, there is a lack of empirical evidence for signaling hypothesis, particularly that which links signaling to business performance outcomes. This research proposes that reputation serves as a marketplace …

Essays On The Effect Of Financial Institution’S Dual Holdings Of Debt And Equity Securities, Jiun-Lin Chen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes the effects on the stock markets when institutional investors hold their client firms’ stocks. The first essay examines the trading impact around earnings announcements and the second essay studies the effect on stock liquidity. In the first essay, we find that relationship institutions (that have lent/underwritten and hold shares of clients) support their clients when these client firms have negative earnings shocks. Their support not only mitigates the negative abnormal return around earnings announcements but also reduces the post-earnings-announcement-drift, thus, earnings momentum profits. In the second essay, we find that client firms held by relationship institutions suffer …

A Viable Entry Level Into Practice: Factors Determining Diploma Nursing Program Success, Linda M. Markey

Entry level into the practice of registered nursing has been a controversial topic in the profession of nursing since the American Nurses Association (ANA) Position Statement in 1965, which stated that entry level into practice should be at the baccalaureate degree level. Diploma nursing programs have proven to score at or above the national mean on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) required by all nursing graduates to pass to obtain licensure for the practice of nursing, regardless of educational preparation. Conceptualizing The Consumer-Brand Relationship As A Truly Dyadic Process, Jamye Foster
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The consumer-brand relationship (CBR) has gained interest in recent years, but as currently conceptualized, it is limited to a parasocial relationship where the role of the brand is not acknowledged. In order to better understand the CBR, we have to ask several key questions: (1) What is the CBR? (2) What are consumer-brand interactions (CBIs)? And (3) How can we measure CBIs? The objective in Essay 1 is to develop a better understanding of the conceptual foundation of the CBR. This was accomplished through extensive review of relevant literature, which highlighted the need to consider the CBR as a truly …
Two Essays On Analyst Bias And Management Entrenchment, Bahar Ulupinar
Two Essays On Analyst Bias And Management Entrenchment, Bahar Ulupinar
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the interactions of corporate governance on analyst behavior. Analyst bias is well documented in the previous literature. However, the relationship between managerial entrenchment and analyst bias has not been explored. In my first essay, I hypothesize that while analysts strike a balance between personal reputation and revenue generation for their employers, entrenched managers of covered firms are more likely to induce analysts’ collaboration using management access and underwriting businesses. My hypothesis suggests that managerial entrenchment is a potential source of analyst bias. Consistent with my hypothesis, using the G-Index as a proxy for managerial entrenchment, I show …

Three Essays In Corporate Governance, Vishaal Rabindranauth Anand Baulkaran
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This dissertation comprises three related but different essays on corporate governance issues. The essays are preceded by an overview of the major areas of corporate governance research. The first essay investigates whether the valuation discount of dual class firms reported in the literature can be explained by three channels through which private benefits can be extracted—excess compensation, excess cash and excess capital expenditure. With a propensity score matched sample of S&P 1500 dual class and single class companies, I provide evidence that excess compensation and excess cash holdings of dual class companies lead to a larger discount that investors apply …

The United States public post-secondary education system varies in its reliance on state support. Some states have a historic predisposition to a private post-secondary education sector, while others have a tradition of strong public institutions. In all cases, public post-secondary relies on state revenue for their general operating and capital budgets. Effective operation in the current fiscal environment requires a clear understanding of different factors affecting a state’s funding level and the challenges presented in periods of slow economic growth.
Over the past six years, higher education, on average, saw positive growth in state support. However, impressive increases in support …
