Managing Environmental Risk In The Oil And Gas Industry, Haley Conner
Managing Environmental Risk In The Oil And Gas Industry, Haley Conner
CMC Senior Theses
Oil and gas industry operations place large pressures on the local environment and inhabitants. However, the continued rise in the demand for useable energy and resources has resulted in further production pressures for oil and gas companies. Meeting these demands comes with high risks and costs to both society and the environment. Oil and gas companies are thus faced with the challenge of meeting the world’s expanding energy demands while minimizing the negative externalities associated with these operations.
Many of the risks these corporations face are site specific, requiring detailed background research and precautionary measures that cannot be solved using …
A Promise Is A Promise: The Ethical Implications For Ceo’S Acting Socially Responsible Within A Corporation, Alexandra Sonett
A Promise Is A Promise: The Ethical Implications For Ceo’S Acting Socially Responsible Within A Corporation, Alexandra Sonett
CMC Senior Theses
The prevalence of corporate social responsibility has been continually increasing over recent years. The debate of whether a business should act in a manner that furthers societal needs or if they should simply focus their efforts on maximizing shareholder value is of popular interest since it affects the fundamental structures of how a business will operate. One of the major influencing theories in favor of social responsibility is the stakeholder theory. The opposing viewpoint is the shareholder theory, which highlights that the sole responsibility for a corporation is to act in a way that maximizes profits. This thesis will outline …
Life Cycle Assessment (Lca) Of Tourism Activities, Kayla Santello
Life Cycle Assessment (Lca) Of Tourism Activities, Kayla Santello
Honors Theses and Capstones
Abstract— Tourism, like other developed industries is a commerce that requires energy inputs and yields outputs with significant effects on the environment. However a comprehensive study examining the life cycle impact associated with each tourism component including transportation, accommodation, food services, and recreation is still lacking. Therefore a search of previous tourism life cycle studies was carried out and ten studies were further investigated. Indicators, assessment approaches, and system boundaries of these previous studies were assessed. Then the outcomes were normalized and compared in order to obtain ranges for the four components of tourism. It was found that energy intensity …
Ngos Creatively Navigating Donor And Governmental Restrictions In The Middle East And North Africa, Jessica David
Ngos Creatively Navigating Donor And Governmental Restrictions In The Middle East And North Africa, Jessica David
Honors Theses and Capstones
Local governments’ regulations and donor organizations’ requirements create political and financial restrictions for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). As a result NGOs in countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco must become creative in the ways they develop and implement projects. In order to be efficient and successful, NGOs use different techniques including creative means to fund their programs, partnerships with outside organizations, and creative uses of their resources.
Many NGOs will find creative solutions to navigate these restrictions. Some of the solutions will be similar, while others will be completely unique. Yet despite …

Honors Theses and Capstones
The accounting scandals that occurred in the early 2000s launched the current day regulations set fourth in the Sarbanes Oxley Act. The Sarbanes Oxley Act is comprised of several titles, all aimed to help eliminate financial accounting errors and the potential of fraud. Within this piece of legislation, there is one section that has created a lot of discussion. Section 404, which discusses the way in which disclosures of internal control deficiencies are handled, is the topic of this paper. In addition to a literature review of a research paper written by Sarah Rice and David Weber, this paper will …

The Effect Of Inventory, Government Policy, And Monopoly On The Asymmetric Price Transmission Of Gasoline And Diesel Price In Thailand, Phaisan Pattanakooha
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The first part of dissertation tests whether the asymmetric price transmission exists for the unleaded gasoline price and the high speed diesel price in Thailand and then tests the hypothesis whether the government policy (the oil fund), the monopoly (the marketing margins), and the adjustment costs (the inventory) cause the price asymmetry. The study employs the monthly data of West Texas Instrument crude oil prices, unleaded gasoline prices and high speed diesel prices, the oil fund, the inventories of unleaded gasoline and high speed diesel. The test econometric model is the asymmetric error correction model. The results show that, in …

Unknown Exception Handling Tool Using Humans As Agents, Mwaka Mahanga
Unknown Exception Handling Tool Using Humans As Agents, Mwaka Mahanga
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In a typical workflow process, exceptions are the norm. Exceptions are defined as deviations from the normal sequence of activities and events. Exceptions can be divided into two broad categories: known exceptions (i.e., expected and predefined deviations) and unknown exceptions (i.e., unexpected and undefined deviations). Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) has become the de facto standard for executing business workflows with the use of web services. BPEL includes exception handling methods that are sufficient for known exception scenarios. Depending on the exception and the specifics of the exception handling tools, processes may either halt or move to completion. Instances of …

Theses
A quantitative case study was conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the mental and psychological health and safety of non-unionised and unionised employees within the researcher's organisation, a multi-national pharmaceutical company based in Ireland. One hundred and sixty-seven employees and seven senior managers were surveyed to explore their perspectives of psychological health and safety risks in the workplace across thirteen different psychosocial factors which are known to either have positive or negative effects on the psychological health and well-being of an employee.
The Guarding Minds at Work (GM@W) online survey resources were considered appropriate methods to collect the necessary …

Theses
This study investigates and explores the Irish craft brewing industry with a specific focus on the attitudes, experiences and perceptions of Irish craft brewers to exportation and cooperation. This rapidly growing, niche sector could be considered a microcosm or subset of the Irish brewing industry and it is a valuable contributor of diversity, innovation, creativity, employment and revenue to the Irish economy as an indigenous industry. A quantitative and qualitative mixed methods approach was adopted to triangulate data from various sources. The research comprised of a survey questionnaire to Irish craft brewers, seven semi structured one-to-one interviews and one focus …

This dissertation focuses on the identification and analysis of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) topoi in the travel and tourism industry. A sample set of six companies was selected for the study due to their size and prominence in the industry -- namely Disney, Hilton, Intercontinental, Marriott, Starwood, and Wyndham. Topoi were identified through a blended method of research that employed rhetorical analysis, modified grounded theory, and NVIVO content analysis software. The research followed three guiding principles to recognize textual cues and drive analysis: common and special topoi; topoi as heuristic; topoi for association and amplification; and topoi as fluid and …
Three Essays On Compensation And The Board Of Directors, Ian Cherry
Three Essays On Compensation And The Board Of Directors, Ian Cherry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In my first essay, I find a statistically and economically significant director-specific component in CEO pay following the enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). In the cross-section of firms, directors that award relatively higher (lower) CEO pay in one firm also award relatively higher (lower) CEO pay in other firms of whose boards they are members during the year. Based on my estimates, the director-specific component is responsible for around ±3.5% of total CEO pay or around ±$230,000 per CEO-year on average. In addition to affecting CEO pay levels, the director-specific component also has a significant effect on …

Judged By The Bottom-Line But Expected To Lead Ethically: A Leader's Catch 22, Darryl Rice
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of the presented research is to explain the importance of integrating the literatures on leader bottom-line mentality (BLM) and behavioral ethics and to demonstrate that leader BLM can adversely impact followers' perceptions of ethical leadership. By doing so, several contributions can be made. First, I identify an antecedent of ethical leadership. Predominantly, most ethical leadership research has focused on identifying its outcomes (Brown & Mitchell, 2010). Second, I will offer new theoretical insights regarding the antecedents of ethical leadership. Past ethical leadership research has primarily relied on social exchange (Blau, 1964; Gouldner, 1960) and social cognitive (Bandura, 1977, …

Trickle-In Effects: How Customer Deviance Behavior Influences Employee Deviance Behavior, Xuhui Wo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prior research has established trickle-down effects (including trickle-out effects) in organizations, that is, perceptions, attitudes, and behavior may flow downward from an individual at a higher level of the organizational hierarchy (e.g., a supervisor) to another individual at a lower hierarchical level (e.g., a frontline employee), or from a frontline employee to an external member (e.g., a customer). Complementing the extant literature, this dissertation examines trickle-in effects, specifically, I examine whether customers' interpersonal and organizational deviance behavior will trickle-in through organizational boundary to influence a frontline employee's interpersonal and organizational deviance behavior. Specifically, I propose customers' interpersonal and organizational deviance …

Firm-Level Corporate Governance In The Context Of Emerging Market Firm Internationalization, Luisa F. Melo
Firm-Level Corporate Governance In The Context Of Emerging Market Firm Internationalization, Luisa F. Melo
2015
This dissertation focuses on internal corporate governance structures, ownership and boards of directors, of emerging market firms (EMNEs). In the context of recent and rapid internationalization, this research aims to make empirical, theoretical and policy contributions. In the first decade of the 21st century, EMNEs became a defining feature of global investment. Emerging market economies attract more than half of global FDI inflows and are counted among the top-20 global investors (World Investment Report, 2011). Explanations of EMNE activity should be grounded in established international business theory; this allows for insights possible through a corporate governance lens.
However, the study …
Are Employee Assistance Programs An Effective Mechanism For Preventing, Managing And Alleviating Stress In The Workplace?, Carol O'Keeffe
Are Employee Assistance Programs An Effective Mechanism For Preventing, Managing And Alleviating Stress In The Workplace?, Carol O'Keeffe
Theses
According to the EAP Institute (2015), the rise in litigation related to occupational illnesses in the 1980’s has spurred companies to take employee health and well-being more seriously, which, subsequently, led to a growth in Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). In particular, the employers' liability for workplace stress continues to be one of the growth areas in Irish employment law (CIPD, 2012), ultimately placing very substantial obligations on employers (Gorry, 2015). This includes the employer’s obligation to identify risk factors, and put in place remedial mechanisms for, preventing, managing and alleviating stress in the workplace.
This dissertation focuses on examining whether …

This dissertation consists of two essays on the influence of affect on consumer intentions and behavioral responses. In the first essay, the influence of negative affect on consumer satiation is investigated. In the second essay, the influence of conceptual fluency, a positive affective response of “feeling right” during advertising evaluations, evoked by the structural properties of memory networks, is identified.
In the first essay, how anticipated consumption variety influences consumers’ affective responses to slow satiation in the present is investigated. Prior research has focused on how cognitive appraisals of present variety influence consumers’ satiation rates. However, in addition to cognitively …
Two Essays On Corporate Finance, Soohyung Kim
Two Essays On Corporate Finance, Soohyung Kim
Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods
This dissertation consists of two essays on corporate finance. The first essay investigates the relationship between dual-class shares and firm’s risk-taking. While costs associated with dual-class shares are widely documented, the benefits are seldom studied in the literature. We attempt to fill this gap and find that dual-class firms tend to have fewer business segments, higher volatilities in their cash flows, earnings, and investment opportunities compared to propensity-matched single-class firms. Business segments within a dual-class firm are also more positively correlated in their cash flows, earnings, or investment opportunities than those in single-class firms. The results are consistent with the …
Two Essays On The Recommendation Behavior Of Multi-Line Salespeople, Sarah R. Magnotta
Two Essays On The Recommendation Behavior Of Multi-Line Salespeople, Sarah R. Magnotta
Theses and Dissertations--Marketing and Supply Chain
This dissertation consists of two essays in which we examine the recommendation behavior of multi-line salespeople. Multi-line salespeople are those who are able to choose among overlapping, competing manufacturers’ products to make a recommendation to their customers. In this dissertation, we seek to explain why and how multi-line salespeople may recommend particular products to their customers.
In the first essay, we examine why salespeople may recommend a particular product. Manufacturers frequently face the challenge of motivating distributor salespeople to focus efforts on their products rather than on their competitors’. Thus, manufacturers often rely on outcome (e.g., rewards) and behavior (e.g., …

Many studies find that SD can generate operational, capability-based, attitudinal, and financial performance measures for both the supplying firm (supplier) and the buying firm (buyer), but very few studies systematically explain why SD yields supplier’s performance improvements and, in turn, buyer’s performance improvements. Using a meta-analysis approach, this dissertation finds that SD does lead to positive outcomes, but SD is found to have very weak or even negative relationship with performance improvements in some cases. Such findings further support the importance of examining the main …
Modeling Large-Scale Cross Effect In Co-Purchase Incidence: Comparing Artificial Neural Network Techniques And Multivariate Probit Modeling, Zhiguo Yang
Theses and Dissertations--Business Administration
This dissertation examines cross-category effects in consumer purchases from the big data and analytics perspectives. It uses data from Nielsen Consumer Panel and Scanner databases for its investigations. With big data analytics it becomes possible to examine the cross effects of many product categories on each other. The number of categories whose cross effects are studied is called category scale or just scale in this dissertation. The larger the category scale the higher the number of categories whose cross effects are studied. This dissertation extends research on models of cross effects by (1) examining the performance of MVP model across …
Mathematical Modeling For Platform-Based Product Configuration Considering Total Life-Cycle Sustainability, Tian Lan
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Many companies are using platform-based product designs to fulfill the requirements of customers while maintaining low cost. However, research that integrates sustainability into platform-based product design is still limited. Considering sustainability during platform-based design process is a challenge because the total life-cycle from pre-manufacturing, manufacturing and use to post-use stages as well as economic, environmental and societal performance in these stages must be considered. In this research, an approach for quantifying sustainability is introduced and a mathematical model is developed for identifying a more sustainable platform. Data from life-cycle assessment is used to quantify environmental factors; criteria from the Product …
A Framework For Sustainable Material Selection For Multi-Generational Components, Ryan T. Bradley
A Framework For Sustainable Material Selection For Multi-Generational Components, Ryan T. Bradley
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The early stages of a product’s design are a critical time for decisions that impact the entire life-cycle cost. Product designers have mastered the first generation; however, they currently do not have the ability to know the impact of their decisions on the multi-generational view. This thesis aims at closing the gap between total life-cycle information and the traditional design process in order to harbor sustainable value creation among all stakeholders involved. A framework is presented that uses a combination of a life-cycle costing methodology and an evolutionary algorithm in order to achieve a sustainability assessment for a true multi-generational …
