The Management Of A Turnaround After An Ethical Breach In A Public Institution Of Higher Education, Ashley Stark Feb 2015

The Management Of A Turnaround After An Ethical Breach In A Public Institution Of Higher Education, Ashley Stark

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

The field of management has built a wealth of literature on turnaround management as well as the effect unethical actions have upon organizations. However, there has been less study on the application of these topics to turnarounds specifically in small, regional, public institutions of higher education. It is important that an institution of higher education that has been affected by an ethical failure execute a turnaround to restore trust and faith in the organization, internally and externally. A small, regional, public institution of higher education in the upper Midwest recently encountered a series of organizational difficulties that negatively influenced its …

Essays On The Impacts Of Quantitative Easing On Financial Markets, Joanne Guo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Due to the severity of the financial crisis of 2008, the Federal Reserve had attempted a variety of unconventional monetary policy to support the U.S. financial markets at the verge of collapse. The most well-known of the Fed's unconventional monetary policy is quantitative easing, in which it purchased a large amount of government securities from the markets in order to lower longer term interest rates and mortgage rates. The several rounds of quantitative easing had different impacts, intended as well as unintended, on U.S. financial markets and foreign markets. The purpose of this paper is to fully explore the effects, …

Essays On Real Estate Investment Trusts, Jiajin Chen Feb 2015

Essays On Real Estate Investment Trusts, Jiajin Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is composed with two essays on real estate investment trusts. The first chapter examines REIT IPOs initial-day, short-run and long-run performance using a large sample of 370 REIT IPOs from four continents (14 different countries) during the 1996-2010 period. The result shows that (1) the newly-established REITs in other countries exhibit similar initial-day return pattern as in the U.S., (2) the low initial-day return might be caused by the fund-like structure of REITs together with the real estate assets they hold, (3) the slightly positive initial-day return is offset by the poor performance in the 190-day days subsequent …

Explorations Of Perceived Product Efficacy, Veronika Ilyuk Feb 2015

Explorations Of Perceived Product Efficacy, Veronika Ilyuk

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Prior research has largely treated perceived product efficacy as a one-dimensional construct. This research uniquely demonstrates that perceived product efficacy is comprised of several dimensions and focuses on one previously unexplored dimension that has significant implications for consumption frequency: perceived duration of product efficacy. The current research shows that consumers make biased duration judgments of product efficacy: consumers make shorter (vs. longer) duration judgments when they perceive a concurrent task to be relatively difficult (vs. easy). The effect of perceived task difficulty on duration judgments of product efficacy is (1) established with energy-enhancing products and medication, (2) shown to be …

It-Enabled Coordination In Electronic Markets: An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Social Communication On Group Buyers, Alexander Pelaez Feb 2015

It-Enabled Coordination In Electronic Markets: An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of Social Communication On Group Buyers, Alexander Pelaez

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Coordination, and the mechanisms by which coordination occurs, represents a significant area of study for economic research, and information technology. Technology enhances communication in both speed and quantity of information and when aligned with appropriate tasks can improve decision-making and task performance. Examining the effect of technology based coordination mechanisms on market platforms provides insight into outcomes as represented by buyer surplus and task completion as well as behaviors, such as network structure and emotional attitudes in economic experiments. Drawing on theory from economics and information systems, larger buyer groups should be able to obtain better prices and extract higher …

The New York Philharmonic Strike Of 1973, Kuan Cheng Lu Feb 2015

The New York Philharmonic Strike Of 1973, Kuan Cheng Lu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The New York Philharmonic Strike of 1973 is a story waiting to be told. The sole volume to mention it, John Canarina's The New York Philharmonic, devotes less than two pages to it. Until now, the full story has lain buried in archival documents, newspaper articles, and the memories of those who experienced it firsthand. This document represents the first comprehensive examination of this event. The research upon which it is based consists of: interviews with the New York Philharmonic members; research in the New York Philharmonic Archives; newspaper articles and reviews. The results are presented here in three …

Sales And Operations Planning: A Performance Framework, Scott C. Ambrose Jan 2015

Sales And Operations Planning: A Performance Framework, Scott C. Ambrose

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Despite a robust body of practitioner-oriented literature focused on the importance of balancing customer demand with product supply within companies, there is very little empirical research suggesting how to achieve it. Sales and Operations planning (S&OP) is a tactical approach meant to help firms accomplish demand and supply balance at aggregate levels. While guidebooks authored by consultants suggest best practices that lead to S&OP success, many experts agree that companies have fallen short of achieving the anticipated benefits. Carried out by cross-functional teams, S&OP entails getting people from different thought worlds to work toward a common goal, a challenging task …

Why Empowering Salespeople Is A Double Edge Sword, Lucy Matthews Jan 2015

Why Empowering Salespeople Is A Double Edge Sword, Lucy Matthews

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Salespeople in business-to-business markets are given autonomy to manage firms’ relationships with their customers. This autonomy implies that salespeople are responsible for making decisions that not only benefit but may also adversely impact customers (e.g., offer an account preferential treatment vs. terminate an established account). While numerous studies establish that autonomy (a critical facet of empowerment) has a positive impact on sales employee’s job outcomes, this study investigates the possibility that salesperson autonomy also has undesirable effects on salesperson job outcomes because it makes them responsible for decisions that have adverse consequences on the customers they are charged with satisfying. …

The results found no significant differences between total compensation levels between domestic and international firms. And with turnover rates of 26 percent and 51 percent, these groups have only board size as a significant impacting variable.

Several demographic questions were added about the respondents and their institutions. An updated study is useful because of three categories of change in higher education since 1996: a) changes in the way higher education conducts its operations; b) changes in …

Nontraditional Students In Management And Accounting Programs: Investigating The Relationship Between Personality And Major Satisfaction In The Community College Setting, Brad Ward Jan 2015

Nontraditional Students In Management And Accounting Programs: Investigating The Relationship Between Personality And Major Satisfaction In The Community College Setting, Brad Ward

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

High school students and working-age adults are frequently pressured by teachers, relatives, peers, employers, and state and federal governments to attend college for such reasons as obtaining new skills, increasing salary and prestige, and seeking new career opportunities (Baxter & Kavanagh, 2012; Calmes, 2014; Holcomb, 2008; Pringle, DuBose, & Yankey, 2010). Approximately 25% of these students drop out of school within the freshman year (ACT, 2013) due, in part, to a poor personality fit with their major (Jones & Jones, 2014). Consequently, attrition has become a costly problem for university administrators and taxpayers (American Institutes for Research, 2011). Personality is …

The Lived Experience Of College Choice, Ryan Ladner Jan 2015

The Lived Experience Of College Choice, Ryan Ladner

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

The purpose of this study was to explore the college decision-making process of high school juniors and seniors. In previous studies, researchers asserted that participants undergo a sequential multi-staged process to determine their college of choice. This study moved away from a standard methodological approach, framing the college decision-making process as complex, multifaceted, and deeply personal. Data for participants were presented in thematic form, showcasing an ever-changing college choice process. Participants began with a dream school and fallback school in mind, which helped to guide their initial search efforts. However, these schools were not static, and various factors (economic, sociological, …

The primary goal is to identify which factors may have significant influence on the firms’ profitability. Two-way fixed effects panel data analysis indicates that the firm’s shareholders’ funds in total asset have significant and positive effect on companies’ yearly profit. The results suggest that four years could be a reasonable period for most wine …

This study explored the public service announcements (PSAs) produced by institutions of higher education that competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 2013-14 postseason football bowl games. Utilizing content analysis and survey results, the researcher examined the level of content distinction between and within institutional groups based on athletic conference, Carnegie classification, total student enrollment, and primary target audience. The researcher also investigated the role the PSAs played in marketing campaigns conducted by the institutions and the additional marketing strategies used in those campaigns. The analysis showed limited distinction between institutional groups and little to no distinction within groups. Further, …

Information Systems Strategy And The Role Of Chief Information Officers: Strategizing And Aligning Practices, Anna Karpovsky Jan 2015

Information Systems Strategy And The Role Of Chief Information Officers: Strategizing And Aligning Practices, Anna Karpovsky

2015

Information Systems (IS) pose both a challenge and an opportunity for organizations. The topic of strategizing around IS issues is thus of considerable importance. While there has been substantial academic research relating to the strategic value of IS – over 50 years – much of it focuses on such aspects of the topic as strategic IS planning, strategic alignment, and IS for competitive advantage. Fewer studies have taken into account the emergent nature of strategy formation. Fewer still have given attention to strategy-making practitioners, in particular their role and influence in the strategizing process. Accordingly, the goal of this dissertation …

This dissertation is made up of three studies, and each study’s purpose, methodology, and findings are summarized below.

The purpose of the first study is to examine the potential for simple metaphors to prime professional skepticism during an auditor’s professional judgment process. Performance Feedback In The Audit Environment, Lindsay Metcalfe Andiola Jan 2015

Performance Feedback In The Audit Environment, Lindsay Metcalfe Andiola

2015

This dissertation consists of three studies that investigate key elements related to performance feedback and effective coaching in the audit environment. The first study presents a framework based on prior research in the psychology and management literatures on the behavioral effects of performance feedback. This framework is then used to organize and synthesize the literature on feedback in the audit setting, and develops topics for further study.

The second and third studies are empirical investigations of performance feedback provided during the audit review process. The second study uses an experiential questionnaire to examine the perceptions of subordinate auditors based on …

The Impact Of Collective Intelligence And Honest Signaling On Fraud Brainstorming Effectiveness: A Sociometric Investigation Using Wearable Sensor Technology, Allen Hartt Jan 2015

The Impact Of Collective Intelligence And Honest Signaling On Fraud Brainstorming Effectiveness: A Sociometric Investigation Using Wearable Sensor Technology, Allen Hartt

2015

This dissertation investigates the impact of collective intelligence and honest signaling on the fraud risk brainstorming effectiveness of audit groups. Emerging research in psychology shows that collective intelligence, which captures the general ability of a group to perform a wide variety of tasks, is a strong predictor of group performance. Honest signals are nonverbal communication cues that are either so costly to make or difficult to suppress that they are reliable in signaling intent.

The first study of this dissertation provides a summary of extant literature examining collective intelligence and honest signaling, with an emphasis on those studies that have …

The Relationship Between Accounting Processes And Interpersonal Trust Within Organizations, Jace B. Garrett Jan 2015

The Relationship Between Accounting Processes And Interpersonal Trust Within Organizations, Jace B. Garrett

2015

Trust is an increasingly critical determinant of organizational success. This dissertation consists of three studies investigating the relationship between firms’ accounting processes and interpersonal trust. Using survey data from Great Place to Work® Institute, the first study investigates the association between trust (i.e., employees’ trust in management) and three aspects of financial reporting: accruals quality, misstatements, and internal control quality. Results suggest that trust is associated with better financial reporting quality. However, these effects are not uniform across companies. Consistent with trust improving financial reporting quality through improved information production and information sharing, results suggest that trust is significantly associated …

Adoption Factors Impacting Human Resource Analytics Among Human Resource Professionals, Roslyn Vargas Jan 2015

Adoption Factors Impacting Human Resource Analytics Among Human Resource Professionals, Roslyn Vargas

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

In today’s fast paced, ever-changing world, one cannot help hearing the terms Big Data and analytics. The Internet holds vast amounts of data and this data, for example in retail, is being used to predict shopping habits, current needs, trends, and more. Why should this be limited to the retail side of an organization? Today, there is a more significant push for Human Resource (HR) professionals to be strategic business partners, and, therefore, HR professionals need to work on leading, not lagging, in the area of measurements and analytics. Some organizations that have adopted the use of analytics in their …

How Can Business Analytics Induce Creativity: The Performance Effects Of User Interaction With Business Analytics, Tarek Soukieh Jan 2015

How Can Business Analytics Induce Creativity: The Performance Effects Of User Interaction With Business Analytics, Tarek Soukieh

ETD Archive

Most organizations today use business analytics systems mainly for efficiency; reducing cost by contacting the right customer, generating revenue by reducing churn, etc. Nevertheless, business analytics holds promise in generating insights and in making users more creative in their decision making process.

Analytics technology is becoming sophisticated with very advanced technical capabilities. However, behavioral aspects (i.e. user interaction) of using business analytics software have not reached the same level of sophistication. Very little research in this field discusses how to implement analytical systems and what outcomes will it produce.

We are looking at conditions that can enhance user interaction with …

Essays On Horizontal Divestitures And Product Market Relationships, Norkeith Ervin Smith

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation is the first to study the product effect of horizontal divestitures on upstream and downstream firms. This first essay examines product market impact of a sample of horizontal asset sales from 1988 to 2005 on corporate customers, suppliers, and industry rivals. I create a sample of firms that classifies corporate customers, suppliers, and industry competitors of firms proposing horizontal asset sales, and employ this data set to investigate the wealth effects at announcement. This study also considers post-divestiture changes in abnormal operating performance for divesting firms, customers, and suppliers.

I document evidence that divestiture related wealth effects for …
