Physical And Emotional Impact Of Lighting Conditions In Higher Education Classrooms, Robert P. Mcdonald, Gallayanee Yaoyuneyong Apr 2023

Physical And Emotional Impact Of Lighting Conditions In Higher Education Classrooms, Robert P. Mcdonald, Gallayanee Yaoyuneyong

AMTP Proceedings 2023

The literature review shows that researchers in different fields have long explored the impact of the physical classroom environments (e.g., lighting, temperature, classroom layout, and furniture) to identify the ideal classroom environments. When the lighting condition is poor (i.e., light levels below standards), it can cause drowsiness, leading to lower concentration and motivation, and elevated student stress. However, most studies focused on K-12 learning environments. Therefore, this study aims to specifically focus on the lighting conditions in educational facilities around a university campus in the Southeastern United States and to explore whether these lighting conditions impact students’ mental well-being, their …

Fail Fast, Learn Fast: Understanding The Process Of Learning From Failure In Smes, Nikolina Koporcic, David Sjödin, Marko Kohtamäki, Vinit Parida

AMTP Proceedings 2023

‘Fail fast and learn fast’ is a common principle advanced to quickly grow and scale startups and SMEs. However, the literature is lacking detailed insights into how such learning processes are organized. The paper aims to investigate how knowledge-intensive SMEs learn from failures through organizational learning processes. Case studies of three high-tech SMEs that operate in a highly dynamic context are presented. The findings are summarized in the learning from failure process, which includes three phases, each with underlying sub-activities and principles: 1) failure recognition, 2) interactive sensemaking, and 3) organizational adaptation. We summarize our insights into a framework disentangling …

Choose Your Channels Strategically: How Gender Plays A Role In The Receiving Of Online Brand Activism Ad Campaigns, Jana Stupavsky Apr 2023

Choose Your Channels Strategically: How Gender Plays A Role In The Receiving Of Online Brand Activism Ad Campaigns, Jana Stupavsky

AMTP Proceedings 2023

The successful launch of a new online brand activism ad campaign focused on gender-sensitive issues can be distorted if the content is delivered through poorly thought-out channels. Companies with access to their customer data should learn more about their existing customer base to strategically select the campaign communication channels. When engaging in activism, brands should consider framing their campaign messaging positively and appear authentic. Otherwise, they risk loss in brand equity and corporate reputation. The following analyses present results from a secondary consumer demographic and behavioral characteristics database anchored in source credibility theory. Its goal is to explore differences in …

The Perceived Impact Of The New Rules Regarding Name, Image, And Likeness (Nil) In Intercollegiate Sports, Sam Fullerton, Ron Wade, Ronald Dick, Michael Mccall

AMTP Proceedings 2023

New rules allow college athletes to earn significant income from a multitude of activities common among professional athletes. These activities include allowing athletes to profit from the sale of intellectual properties that bear their name, image, or likeness (NIL); additional opportunities include blogs, social media posts, camps, and autograph sessions. Early perceptions of the impact of these new NIL rules have been far from unanimous. A sample of 404 students from five American universities provided feedback regarding their perceptions of nine NIL-related considerations: the impact that the new NIL rules have had on college sports, if the athletes benefit, whether …

Brand Me: How Linkedin Training Improves Personal Branding By Influencing Self-Esteem And Job Search Self-Efficacy By Generating An All-Star Profile, Christopher Leo, Timothy Halloran, Carlos Valdez, Leslie Connell, Jennifer Morin

AMTP Proceedings 2023

This article considers how LinkedIn training in the form of a workshop can improve a professional's personal brand by influencing self-esteem and job search efficacy by developing a LinkedIn All-Star Profile. Self-esteem and self-efficacy are two of the most highly researched social and vocational psychology aspects. While there has been some research on the impact of non-technological workshops, there needs to be more research on the effects of workshop training in these two variables on employee personal brand on social media.

The Effect Of Social Skills On Analyst Performance, Cong Cong Li, An-Ping Lin, Hai Lu

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Social skills are important but difficult to measure. So far, few empirical studies have examined the effect of social skills on the performance of professionals. Using the number of LinkedIn connections as a proxy for social skills, we investigate the effect of financial analysts' social skills on their performance. We use multiple ways to validate the measure of social skills and show that analysts with better social skills produce more accurate earnings forecasts and that their stock recommendations elicit stronger market reactions. Furthermore, these socially skilled analysts are more likely to be voted as All-Star Analysts. This study provides the …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Situated at the intersection between environmental entrepreneurship and urban sustainability, our paper seeks to investigate the links between city-level green venture ecosystems and the ability of urban centres to reduce air pollution. Using a large dataset of 12,834 urban centres from around the world and their associated yearly average particulate matter (PM2.5), we show that an increase in the cumulative number of green start-ups drives the lowering of PM2.5 levels. Looking closely at the subsectors that drive the results, we observe that the urban centres which hosted increased numbers of innovators in smart grid technologies, energy efficiency and wind energy …

Code Will Tell: Visual Identification Of Ponzi Schemes On Ethereum, Xiaolin Wen, Kim Siang Yeo, Yong Wang, Ling Cheng, Feida Zhu, Min Zhu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ethereum has become a popular blockchain with smart contracts for investors nowadays. Due to the decentralization and anonymity of Ethereum, Ponzi schemes have been easily deployed and caused significant losses to investors. However, there are still no explainable and effective methods to help investors easily identify Ponzi schemes and validate whether a smart contract is actually a Ponzi scheme. To fill the research gap, we propose PonziLens, a novel visualization approach to help investors achieve early identification of Ponzi schemes by investigating the operation codes of smart contracts. Specifically, we conduct symbolic execution of opcode and extract the control flow …

The Effect Of Magnet Hospitals On Nursing Burnout, Jonathan Settle, Michael Davis, Eric Pulice, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Introduction:

The World Health Organization [2019] defined burnout as a syndrome caused by chronic job stressors that are not successfully managed, characterized by exhaustion, depersonalization, job detachment, and feelings of inadequacy (WHO, 2019). According to Murthy [2022], the nursing burnout crisis was underway before COVID-19. Nurse burnout recognized pre-COVID-19 was due to systemic organizational problems such as inadequate organizational support and underinvestment in public health (Murthy, 2022).

A 2022 survey of 2500 nurses exhibited increased rates of burnout during the pandemic, with 75% of respondents experiencing burnout, while 65% of those surveyed expressed their desire to leave the healthcare field …

Effects Of The Needle Exchange Program And Its Current Status In West Virginia, Thomas Norton, Amber Graves, Anthony Uriarte, Katherine Duty, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Excerpt:
One of the main problems that have impacted the state of healthcare in West Virginia has been the rising costs of treatments for bloodborne infections (Bates et al., 2019). Bloodborne pathogens and their resulting diseases have commonly spread by exchanging contaminated needles (Denault & Gardner, 2021). In West Virginia, Needle Exchange Programs (NEPs) have been implemented to reduce the transmission of certain infections, such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, which have been more common among drug users (Beck & Kersey, 2018). In 2015, West Virginia had the second-highest rate of cases of hepatitis C Virus (HCV) in …

Fintech: How And Is It Being Taught In Academia?, Michael Thomas, Abby Milner

Graduate Research Showcase

Merriam Webster defines Fintech as “products and companies that employ newly developed digital and online technologies in the banking and financial services industries” (Merriam-Webster). Fintech, short for financial technology, is not new; however, it has become a hot topic as of recently. During the pandemic, Fintech and the many apps and programs that make up financial technology began to surge. Applications that made applying for loans and moving money easily between friends and businesses were of utmost importance during this time. Instant financial results and access are only continuing in demand. The days of going into a brick-and-mortar building and …

A Reparatory Model Of Ethical Silence, Yuanmei Qu, Mayowa Babalola, Mozzam Ali, Jennifer Harrison, Muhammad Usman Mar 2023

A Reparatory Model Of Ethical Silence, Yuanmei Qu, Mayowa Babalola, Mozzam Ali, Jennifer Harrison, Muhammad Usman

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

Drawing from the appraisal theory of emotion and self-conscious emotions literature, this study proposes a reparatory model of ethical silence at work. We posit that when employees maintain silence on ethical issues, they experience feelings of guilt. This guilt, in turn, propels them to engage in ethical performance as reparatory behaviors. Results from a multisource, three-wave field study supported these hypotheses. Overall, this research contributes to silence literature and provides insights into how and when ethical silence may, paradoxically, facilitate more ethical performance later on.

Sound decision-making relies on accurate prediction for tangible outcomes ranging from military conflict to disease outbreaks. To improve crowdsourced forecasting accuracy, we developed SAGE, a hybrid forecasting system that combines human and machine generated forecasts. The system provides a platform where users can interact with machine models and thus anchor their judgments on an objective benchmark. The system also aggregates human and machine forecasts weighting both for propinquity and based on assessed skill while adjusting for overconfidence. We present results from the Hybrid Forecasting Competition (HFC)—larger than comparable forecasting tournaments—including 1085 users forecasting 398 real-world forecasting problems over 8 months. …

Public Support: A Missing Variable In The Trade Policy Equation, Jill O’Donnell Mar 2023

Public Support: A Missing Variable In The Trade Policy Equation, Jill O’Donnell

Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review

As Canada considers launching free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with Ecuador, the government wants to know what Canadians think. Ottawa makes it easy for citizens to weigh in, inviting Canadians to “join the discussion” and submit their “views, reflections and priorities” on the potential FTA through a Global Affairs Canada web page that is clear, inviting, and user-friendly. Under a section titled, “Who should participate?” the first answer given is “individuals.”

Although the Biden administration has been clear that it will not seek new FTA negotiations, taking a page from Canada’s public consultation playbook may be instructive, at least when …
