Stability Of Deep Neural Networks For Feedback-Optimal Pinpoint Landings, Omkar S. Mulekar, Hancheol Cho, Riccardo Bevilacqua Oct 2023

Stability Of Deep Neural Networks For Feedback-Optimal Pinpoint Landings, Omkar S. Mulekar, Hancheol Cho, Riccardo Bevilacqua

Student Works

The ability to certify systems driven by neural networks is crucial for future rollouts of machine learning technologies in aerospace applications. In this study, the neural networks are used to represent a fuel-optimal feedback controller for two different 3-degree-of-freedom pinpoint landing problems. It is shown that the standard sum-ofsquares Lyapunov candidate is too restrictive to assess the stability of systems with fuel-optimal control profiles. Instead, a parametric Lyapunov candidate (i.e. a neural network) can be trained to sufficiently evaluate the closed-loop stability of fuel-optimal control profiles. Then, a stability-constrained imitation learning method is applied, which simultaneously trains a neural network …

No News Is Bad News: Local News Intensity And Firms' Information Environments, Kristian D. Allee, Ryan Cating, Caleb Rawson Oct 2023

No News Is Bad News: Local News Intensity And Firms' Information Environments, Kristian D. Allee, Ryan Cating, Caleb Rawson

Accounting Faculty Publications and Presentations

We examine the effects of local newspapers on firms’ information environments. With newspaper employment dropping precipitously in the last few decades, we posit that these changes will harm local firms’ information environments. Consistent with local news improving information environments, we find that volatility, spreads, and illiquidity increase as local newspaper intensity declines and that this is associated with firms’ importance in their local economy. We further find that for firms that are more important in their community, or have busy analysts, less local newspaper intensity is associated with significantly lower analyst accuracy and higher forecast dispersion. This is consistent with …

Estimating And Applying Autoregression Models Via Their Eigensystem Representation, Leo Krippner Oct 2023

Estimating And Applying Autoregression Models Via Their Eigensystem Representation, Leo Krippner

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

This article introduces the eigensystem autoregression (EAR) framework, which allows an AR model to be specified, estimated, and applied directly in terms of its eigenvalues and eigenvectors. An EAR estimation can therefore impose various constraints on AR dynamics that would not be possible within standard linear estimation. Examples are restricting eigenvalue magnitudes to control the rate of mean reversion, additionally imposing that eigenvalues be real and positive to avoid pronounced oscillatory behavior, and eliminating the possibility of explosive episodes in a time-varying AR. The EAR framework also produces closed-form AR forecasts and associated variances, and forecasts and data may be …

Let's Speculate About It: When And Why Consumers Want To Discuss Mystery Products, Aleksandra Kovacheva, Hillary Wiener Oct 2023

Let's Speculate About It: When And Why Consumers Want To Discuss Mystery Products, Aleksandra Kovacheva, Hillary Wiener

Marketing Faculty Scholarship

Research suggests that mystery products can be appealing to consumers and can motivate interest and purchase. In this paper, we examine a different benefit of these offerings – their effect on driving conversation. We propose that such products can prompt a conversation due to their ability to motivate joint speculation, or the process of thinking about possible resolutions of the uncertainty with others. We define this novel driver of conversation, delineate it from related constructs, and situate it in the literature. We then provide initial evidence for the proposed theory in seven studies (n = 2,835), demonstrating that mystery …

Does An Accounting Internship Impact Cpa Exam Performance?, Xiaochuan Zheng, A. Can Inci Oct 2023

Does An Accounting Internship Impact Cpa Exam Performance?, Xiaochuan Zheng, A. Can Inci

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

We examined whether an accounting internship influences CPA exam performance. Using 2005–2013 candidate data, we found that an internship is significantly related to CPA exam performance in the Auditing (AUD) section. We speculate that the internship’s observed positive effect for the AUD section and the lack of effect for the other three sections is because the audit section more closely reflects knowledge/skills acquired by interns than the other three exam sections. These results have implications for academics and candidates seeking to improve CPA exam performance. Our study also provides information for those considering incorporating an accounting internship into the curriculum.

Evaluating Food Waste Management In Melbourne Businesses & Effects On Food Insecurity Remediation, Elinor Kops

This research paper aims to understand the presence of sustainable food waste management in food retail businesses, as well as the importance of food donation to the success of food insecurity remediation organizations in the city of Melbourne, Victoria. Intensive in-person, online, and over-the-phone interviews were conducted in two categories: food retail businesses (subcategories being supermarkets and restaurants) and food insecurity remediation organizations. Of the 133 businesses contacted, 16 food service businesses were interviewed, and three food insecurity remediation organizations were interviewed. A survey was utilized for food retail businesses that received a single response in the supermarket subcategory; data …

The Future Of U.S. Agricultural Biotechnology And Trade: Summary Of A Roundtable Discussion Oct 2023

The Future Of U.S. Agricultural Biotechnology And Trade: Summary Of A Roundtable Discussion

Yeutter Institute Publications

The United States is one of the largest and highest-yield agricultural producers and exporters in the world. But the world’s population is growing, and growing conditions themselves are changing. Farms face shifting weather patterns, more frequent and severe storms, floods, and drought, and changing pest and disease pressures. What farmers plant and how they plant it are evolving to keep pace with these changes. Future global food security, sustainability, and U.S. leadership in agriculture will depend on the domestic and international policy and regulatory landscapes for agricultural biotechnology innovation. The Clayton Yeutter Institute of International Trade and Finance at the …

Market Perceptions Of Fair Value Reporting For Tangible Assets, Jenelle K. Conaway, Lihong Liang, Edward J. Riedl Oct 2023

Market Perceptions Of Fair Value Reporting For Tangible Assets, Jenelle K. Conaway, Lihong Liang, Edward J. Riedl

Accounting - All Scholarship

This article examines equity market perceptions of fair value reporting for tangible assets. We identify six events—four designated as increasing, two as decreasing—affecting the likelihood of U.S. adoption of fair value reporting for investment property (i.e., real estate) assets, one of the largest asset classes in the world. Fair value adoption in the United States would facilitate convergence of one of the widest remaining disparities between U.S. reporting and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS): accounting for tangible investment property assets, where the United States (IFRS) requires depreciated historical cost (recognized or disclosed fair values). Using a sample of U.S. investment …
