Ethics In Publishing, Susan R. Madsen, Kenneth R. Bartlett, Thomas G. Reio, Richard J. Torraco, Wendy E.A. Ruona, Mark Morrow

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Ethics has become a critical topic for HRD scholars and practitioners (Aragon & Hatcher, 2001). There are greater numbers of publicized ethical breaches among members of the business community during the past decade than ever before. It has become clear that there is a growing need to re-examine the ethics of specific strategies employed in all kinds of organizations (e.g., business, government, non-profit, education) throughout the world (Wilson, 1993). In fact, it seems that HRD faculty and practitioners are being asked more frequently to develop and implement ethics-related training and organization development interventions to address these concerns. Interestingly, many HRD …

Preparing For Future Leadership Development Efforts In The United Arab Emirates: Studying The Transformational Learning Experiences Of Women Students In Abu Dhabi, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

To consider designing future efforts toward developing leadership programs for women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it is important to understand how these women learn most effectively. In-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with Emirati students at a women’s college in the UAE to investigate their learning backgrounds, perceptions, and transformational learning experiences while students. Additional interviews were conducted with faculty and staff to provide insights into many of the issues, challenges, and experiences the students discussed. Since developing leadership is a transforming process, transformational learning theory provided a valuable theoretical lens to guide this study. This paper presents findings …

Developing Leadership Throughout Life: The Experiences Of Emirati Women Leaders In The United Arab Emirates, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Leadership development for women has recently emerged as an important focus of researchers and practitioners in many countries across the globe. Public, private, and social sector organizations in various settings are now acknowledging the importance of preparing both men and women for strong, competent leadership (Madsen, 2008). During the past decade this topic has also become an important area of research and practice within human resource development (HRD) arena in the U.S. and beyond (Ardichvili & Manderscheid, 2008). However in some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), research on and programs for developing women leaders are only in …

The Social And Moral Responsibility Of U.S. Americans To Assist In Building Human Capacity Throughout The World, Susan R. Madsen, Stephen W. Gibson, Troy Holmberg, Douglas Jackson Jan 2009

The Social And Moral Responsibility Of U.S. Americans To Assist In Building Human Capacity Throughout The World, Susan R. Madsen, Stephen W. Gibson, Troy Holmberg, Douglas Jackson

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

There are many individuals throughout the world, particularly in developing nations, who are unable to obtain the education and training necessary to support themselves and families. Needless to say, most of these people will never be able to reach their full human potential. Although more and more U.S. citizens and agencies are interested in becoming involved in initiatives focused on helping others in these countries, there is still much that should be done. This presentation argues that it is the social and moral responsibility of those who have the means and education to assist in building human capacity throughout the …

Supply Chain Management Practices As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Operations Capability And Firm Performance, Chinchun Hsu, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, G. Keong Leong

Management Faculty Publications

The current study uses mediated regression analysis and structural equation modeling to test the proposition that supply chain management practices mediate the relationship between operations capability and firm performance. Operations capability is defined in terms of a firm's new product design and development, total quality management and just-in-time capabilities. Results support the research model and also suggest the existence of a direct relationship between operations capability and performance.

Safety-Focused Altruism: Valuing The Lives Of Others, Kevin Lee Brady Dec 2008

Safety-Focused Altruism: Valuing The Lives Of Others, Kevin Lee Brady

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The value of statistical life is an estimate of the monetary benefits of preventing an anonymous death. Society's willingness to pay to eliminate private health risks determines agencies' value-of-statistical-life estimates. Most estimates ignore society's willingness to pay to eliminate others' health risks. There are two possible reasons. First, altruism does not exist: Peter is not willing to pay to save Paul's life. The second possible reason is a bit more complicated. Certain economists argue that increasing benefit estimates to account for altruism involves double-counting.

The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate these possibilities. Accounting for altruism, it turns out, …

Ethics In Publishing: Professional Development Workshop, James Davis, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

This PDW is all about “The Questions We Ask?” In fact, it is also about “The Questions We Should Ask!” With the fairly recent and highly publicized breaches of ethics among members of the business community, there is a need to re-examine specific strategies employed in all kinds of organizations. Many business faculty are comfortable teaching ethics in the classroom, but are we (as scholars and educators) appropriately challenging our own ethical practices? Ethics in publishing is one of the areas that many disciplines have recently been addressing. This workshop will provide faculty, administrators, and doctoral students the forum to …

Three Essays On Stock Market Volatility, Qianru Li May 2008

Three Essays On Stock Market Volatility, Qianru Li

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Volatility is inherently unobservable, and thus the selection of models and their definition is crucial in financial research. This dissertation attempts to check the role of investor sentiment and forecast Value-at-Risk (VaR) of the stock market using both parametric and nonparametric approaches. In the first essay, based on daily return data of three stock indices and four individual stocks from January 1988 to December 2006, the role of day-of-the-week, as well as investor sentiment, is examined using two approaches: linear regression to test investor sentiment effect on stock returns and Logit regression to test the investor sentiment effect on market …

Forgiveness As An Individual, Group, And Organizational Competency: A Literature Review And Comments, Scott C. Hammond, Susan R. Madsen Oct 2007

Forgiveness As An Individual, Group, And Organizational Competency: A Literature Review And Comments, Scott C. Hammond, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Studying forgiveness presents a formidable challenge to the organizational scholar. Forgiveness is a concept that has cultural, moral, and behavioral implications. Generally seen as rooted in religion by many (Smith, 1988), it is also a concept that may have a significant impact within the organization. In this paper we will offer a three-part model of the notion of forgiveness. Our model is based on the observation that the existing literature on forgiveness is clustered around three levels of behavioral patterns: 1) individual forgiveness, 2) group forgiveness, and 3) organizational forgiveness. We will also present a newly developed framework with an …

The Impact Of Operations Capability On Firm Performance, K. C. Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, R. Narasimhan Sep 2007

The Impact Of Operations Capability On Firm Performance, K. C. Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, R. Narasimhan

Management Faculty Publications

We propose that a firm's operations capability is manifested through its new product design and development, just-in-time, and quality-management efforts. Moreover, we propose that operations capability, so defined, directly and positively impacts firm performance. Survey data were used to independently calibrate and validate a structural equation model linking operations capability, a second-order construct, to firm performance. Results provide support for the model and demonstrate a positive relationship between operations capability and firm performance.

One of the central foci established in other academies and organizations (e.g., Academy of Management, Western Academy of Management, Eastern Academy of Management, American Association of Higher Education, and the Society of Human Resource Management) is that of the scholarship of teaching and learning in academic classrooms. In 1990 Ernest Boyer published a groundbreaking book titled Scholarship Reconsidered. He introduced the concept of four scholarships: 1) the scholarship of discovery; 2) the scholarship of application; 3) the scholarship of integration, and 4) the scholarship of teaching and learning. Since that time, the attention directed towards scholarly activities (e.g., research, …

Acquisition Of Operations Capability: A Model And Test Across Us And European Firms, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Jayanth Jayaram, Ram Narasimhan

Management Faculty Publications

In this paper, a three-factor model of operations capability is presented which, unlike previous studies that view capability as an outcome, examines the drivers of capability acquisition. The model proposes that capability acquisition is a function of an organization's commitment to the principles of quality management, just-in-time practices, and effective new product development processes. Furthermore, the paper proposes that these underlying facets of capability acquisition are common across geographic boundaries. The model is tested using data drawn from US and European companies. Results not only provide support for the three-factor model, but also for the invariance of the model and …

The Ethics Of Entitlement In Higher Education: Greater Good Versus Self Interest In The Academy, Scott C. Hammond, Susan R. Madsen Jan 2007

The Ethics Of Entitlement In Higher Education: Greater Good Versus Self Interest In The Academy, Scott C. Hammond, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Higher education often pretends to support practical egalitarian organizations with access to all and openness of ideas. But in reality it is a hierarchy just like any private corporation. Individual identity determines status in the hierarchy. People jockey for changes in status. There are clear rules for moving up and down in status. This paper asks the question "Do the entitlements that we support in order to maintain the equalitarian ideal in fact work against it?"

Teaching Ethics And Honesty In Business Classrooms: A Study Of Changes In Student Perceptions, Susan R. Madsen, Ovilla Turnbull, Troy R. Nielson, Larry D. Hartman

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

With recent highly publicized breaches of ethics among members of the business community (e.g., Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia, Global Crossing, and Tyco), there is a need to re-examine specific strategies employed in colleges and universities to influence business students toward increased ethics and honesty. The purpose of this study was to examine whether perceptions and attitudes toward ethics and honesty could be influenced during a semester-long college business course. A survey was administered to students in six human resource management classes taught by four different faculty members. The Likert scale questionnaire utilized the 20-item Ethics Position Questionnaire (Forsyth, 1980) as well …
