Defining And Meeting The Demand For Agricultural Machinery In China: A Case Study Of John Deere, Garrett W. Davis
Defining And Meeting The Demand For Agricultural Machinery In China: A Case Study Of John Deere, Garrett W. Davis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There has been little research conducted regarding the agricultural machinery market in China. However, current data suggest that this demand is dramatically increasing. This dissertation endeavors to generally define the current demand of the agricultural machinery market in China. There has been research conducted on multiple factors of the agricultural machinery market in China, such as land tenure rights, rural migration, government agricultural policies, and others. Through the use of limited quantitative data, market demand is analyzed and defined. By means of a qualitative case study of a successful multinational corporation, Deere & Co., how the demand is being met …

The constructivist's theory and its application to information retrieval from the Internet was reviewed. The main aim of the study was to devise and test an approach with which the most relevant information could be easily and efficiently extracted from the Internet. The impact of a judicious choice of the keywords to retrieve information, according to the particular approach to be implemented as well as the importance of speed reading as an additional technique to improve information retrieval, was compared and critically analyzed. The study was based on information retrieval from www.google.com and www.images.google.com and focused on real-life examples and …

The Experiences Of Arab Women Leaders In Learning To Lead, Susan R. Madsen
Susan R. Madsen
To consider designing and developing leadership programs for women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it is important to understand how current leaders have learned to lead throughout their lives. In-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with Arab women leaders (government and business) to investigate their lifetime experiences in developing leadership.

Innovative Reflection Tools For Developing Leadership For Transformation, Susan R. Madsen, Katherine A. Tunheim
Susan R. Madsen
Since developing leadership is seeded in learning, there is a continuous effort to understand the most effective methods and techniques to assist individuals in becoming leaders. The purpose of this engaging workshop is to offer a variety of innovative tools that both academics and practitioners can use with adult learners in various settings to help them further develop leadership knowledge, competencies, and skills through enhanced reflection experiences. We cannot help create leaders who transform without helping them first be transformed by their own learning experiences. Learning that transforms individuals is learning that changes individuals. Since developing leadership is a transforming …

Faculty Ethics Unveiled: Scholarship--Et Tu, Brute?, Susan R. Madsen, James Davis
Susan R. Madsen
Little actual research has been conducted to explore the ethics of the faculty of higher education. A review of the literature has discovered four primary categories of faculty ethics, which include scholarship, teaching, service, and professional (e.g., consulting, treatment of colleagues and peers). This paper will focus on the scholarship category and includes research (e.g., authorship, conflicts of interest, plagiarism/citing-including self-plagiarism, ethical approval, research design, redundant publications, misconduct, accuracy, personal criticism of others) and review of other's work as a reviewer or editor (e.g., unbiased, speed/timeliness, accuracy, responsibility, objectivity, confidentiality, conflicts of interest). The purpose of this paper is to …
The First Steps Toward Developing Leadership Programs For Women In The United Arab Emirates: A Survey Study Exploring The Transformation Of Emirati College Students, Susan R. Madsen
Susan R. Madsen
Developing effective leaders has become one of the most critical challenges for many organizations today, as strong, competent leadership often separates high-performing, successful organizations from less effective ones. In many countries research is being conducted to assist practitioners in designing successful leadership development programs for both men and women. However, in some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), these efforts are only in their infancy, and leadership development for women is a new concept. Needless to say, there is no evidence of existing research on the development of women leaders in that country, and only a few indications …
Using The Worldly Leadership Lens To Approach The Task Of Developing Women Leaders, Susan R. Madsen
Using The Worldly Leadership Lens To Approach The Task Of Developing Women Leaders, Susan R. Madsen
Susan R. Madsen
The rate at which globalization has occurred in all types of businesses and organizations has forced researchers and practitioners into considering new paradigms of leadership (Robinson & Harvey, 2008). In fact, Muczyk and Holt (2008) reported that 85% of Fortune 500 executives say that their firms do not currently have enough competent individuals to lead effectively in this kind of global environment. Most (e.g., Livers, 2007) agree that leading globally requires a fundamental shift in terms of thinking and behavior, but to date most researchers and practitioners are focusing their efforts on understanding and developing clearly defined skill set or …

Feminism, Globalism, And Leadership: How Women Make A "Worldly" World, Susan R. Madsen, Scott C. Hammond, Jory Jensen
Susan R. Madsen
The influx of women into leadership, management, and idea leader roles is clearly one of the significant aspects of globalization over the last 50 years. While women are still underrepresented in global business and politics, their influence on reconceptualizing leadership models is undeniable. While it would be difficult to precisely determine a “feminist” perspective on leadership, idea leaders such as Mary Parker Follett, Rosabeth Kanter and Margaret Wheatley have influenced the concept and practice of leadership beyond any gender construct. The unique themes within their work are present in the global dialogue that is reframing how everyone thinks of leadership. …

In the ever changing business world, establishing a competitive advantage is essential in order to build and sustain the viability of a company. The global investment industry has developed dramatically over the past 20 years generating new opportunities for investors worldwide. One example is exhibited by the increasing global demand for Brazil securities ds well as others in various emerging markets. With this increasing demand by foreign investors in the Brazilian markets, firms are constantly attempting to identify the best, most efficient, cost-effective products and services. Because a majority of the products are relatively the same across the industry, companies …

The Recruitment And Retention Of Nonprofit Employees, Susan R. Madsen, Melissa Swasey
Susan R. Madsen
Employee turnover has become a serious management challenge in the nonprofit sector. In addition to agencies needing to continue to offer basic services sometimes without qualified employees, high turnover can damage the morale of employees who remain. Hence, we chose the topic of attracting and retaining qualified nonprofit employees in Utah County as a critical area for a research study.

The primary purpose of this innovative session is to provide HRD faculty, administrators, and graduate students the forum to listen to panelists and then discuss current issues and challenges related to the ethical decision-making and behavior of researchers and scholars as it relates to publishing. It will provide attendees the opportunity to challenge behaviors and practices commonly seen and held within this arena. I (Susan R. Madsen) just faciliated a very successful session at the Academy of Management in Anaheim (August, 2008) on this topic and realized that we need the same conversation (different panelists) in the AHRD. In fact, …
Preparing For Future Leadership Development Efforts In The United Arab Emirates: Studying The Transformational Learning Experiences Of Women Students In Abu Dhabi, Susan R. Madsen
Susan R. Madsen
To consider designing future efforts toward developing leadership programs for women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it is important to understand how these women learn most effectively. In-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with Emirati students at a women’s college in the UAE to investigate their learning backgrounds, perceptions, and transformational learning experiences while students. Additional interviews were conducted with faculty and staff to provide insights into many of the issues, challenges, and experiences the students discussed. Since developing leadership is a transforming process, transformational learning theory provided a valuable theoretical lens to guide this study. This paper presents findings …

Developing Leadership Throughout Life: The Experiences Of Emirati Women Leadership In The United Arab Emirates, Susan R. Madsen
Susan R. Madsen
Leadership development for women has recently emerged as an important focus of researchers and practitioners in many countries across the globe. Public, private, and social sector organizations in various settings are now acknowledging the importance of preparing both men and women for strong, competent leadership (Madsen, 2008). During the past decade this topic has also become an important area of research and practice within human resource development (HRD) arena in the U.S. and beyond (Ardichvili & Manderscheid, 2008). However in some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), research on and programs for developing women leaders are only in …

The Social And Moral Responsibility Of U.S. Americans To Assist In Buildling Human Capacity Throughout The World, Steve Gibson, Susan R. Madsen, Douglas Jackson, Troy Holmberg
Susan R. Madsen
There are many individuals throughout the world, particularly in developing nations, who are unable to obtain the education and training necessary to support themselves and families. Needless to say, most of these people will never be able to reach their full human potential. Although more and more U.S. citizens and agencies are interested in becoming involved in initiatives focused on helping others in these countries, there is still much that should be done. This presentation argues that it is the social and moral responsibility of those who have the means and education to assist in building human capacity throughout the …

Shareholder Returns For A Catalyst Award, M. M. Arthur, Alison Cook

Using an event study methodology, we examine firm share price reactions to the designation of a Catalyst Award. We find a positive relationship between the human resource award and share price reactions. In addition, we find varying degrees of support that timing, firm size, and labor force composition moderate share price reactions. Specifically, we find that earlier award announcements generate larger share price reactions than more recent award announcements. We also find support that larger firms reap greater share price reactions than smaller firms. And last, we do not find support that the proportion of women in an industry moderates …

When Markets Blink: Stock Price Responses To The Appointment Of Minority Leaders, Alison Cook, C. Glass

This study examines whether the appointment of racial/ethnic minorities into top management positions has a different impact on share price than the appointment of members of the racial/ethnic majority into equivalent positions. Our dependent variable is the degree of change in share price following the announcement of minority and majority men into senior management positions. Market reaction to the naming of minorities into corporate leadership positions is significant and negative while the market’s reaction to the naming of members of the racial/ethnic majority is significant and positive. Our findings suggest that racial/ethnic integration of corporate hierarchies may be impeded as …

This study examines whether the appointment of racial/ethnic minorities into top management positions has a different impact on share price than the appointment of Caucasians into equivalent positions. Our dependent variable is the degree of change in share price following the announcement of racial/ethnic minority and Caucasian men into senior management positions. Market reaction to the naming of racial/ethnic minorities into corporate leadership positions is significant and negative while the market’s reaction to the naming of Caucasians is significant and positive. However, the negative market reaction to the appointment of racial/ethnic minorities into top management positions is mitigated in those …

Supply Chain Management Practices As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Operations Capability And Firm Performance, Chinchun Hsu, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, G. Keong Leong
Management Faculty Publications
The current study uses mediated regression analysis and structural equation modeling to test the proposition that supply chain management practices mediate the relationship between operations capability and firm performance. Operations capability is defined in terms of a firm's new product design and development, total quality management and just-in-time capabilities. Results support the research model and also suggest the existence of a direct relationship between operations capability and performance.
