It's Not What You Make, It's The Way That You Say It: Reflections On The Design-Marketing Interface, Paul O'Sullivan Jan 1998

It's Not What You Make, It's The Way That You Say It: Reflections On The Design-Marketing Interface, Paul O'Sullivan

Articles

Good design is a cornerstone of marketing. Design is an important variable in every aspect of marketing activities- products, processes, packaging and communications. Yet this topic attracts little attention in the marketing literature and there is, one suspects, very little cross-fertilisation between marketing and design disciplines. This paper puts design on the agenda for both marketing academics and practitioners as well as providing a review of what is embraced within the broad subject of design. Some observations on the history and role of design in an Irish context are offered also.

New Product Development And Technology Acquisition In Small And Medium Sized Manufacturing Firms In Ireland, David Cullen

This concerns itself with the two key areas under investigation; new product development and technology transfer. In addition to …

The Changing Nature Of Theory And Practice In Marketing: On The Value Of Synchrony, Aidan O'Driscoll, John Murray Jan 1998

The Changing Nature Of Theory And Practice In Marketing: On The Value Of Synchrony, Aidan O'Driscoll, John Murray

Articles

Any academic discipline with a closely associated area of professional endeavour is profoundly affected by the relationship between its theory and practice. Synchrony in theory and practice adds value to the management of enterprise and to the advance of the discipline. Mindful of this assertion, this article explores the changing nature of theory and practice in marketing. It examines current trends in marketing practice which are occurring as a result of change in markets, technology and organisations. It assesses the state of theory in six subfields of marketing. It also considers developments in closely related management disciplines as well as …

“The World Is What You Make It” - An Application Of Virtual Reality To The Tourism Industry, Patrick Horan

Conference papers

Sooner or later, nearly everyone with a web site wants to know how much traffic their site is getting. Other information, such as how long your visitors are staying on your site, which pages they are visiting, and how often they return will also help you develop a better site. There are various ways of gathering this information, some of which are more accurate than others. This paper identifies the different methods of finding this information and uncovers some of the problems associated with these methods.

Other resources

Bartenders Association of Ireland – A History book (1997) captured the many social and professional practice events, awards, new drinks and hotels services launched, significant bar and cocktail industry people and their contributions plus the many community activities which the bartenders and members of the Bartenders Association of Ireland (BAI) have successfully completed from the 1940s up to the late 1990s. The successful completion of these activities would not be been possible without the active and on-going support of the many Irish and international drinks and hospitality establishments (association supporters) and the association’s membership and active support of initially the …

Key media drivers of change in the network such as cable and satellite television, pay-per-view and digital technology are examined while the influence of sponsors and the issue of ambush marketing also influence the location of power in the sports …

Virtual Reality Applications In The Hospitality / Tourism Industry, Patrick Horan

In this paper the possible applications of VR to the Tourism Industry are discussed. In order to develop an application for any industry one must first get a clear understanding of that industry. Once this is achieved the next step is to develop an application to suit the needs of the Industry. The Industry in question here is the Tourism Industry and this paper begins by discussing the Tourism Industry and more specifically the relationship between Tourism and technology. This is absolutely essential in order to understand how the use of VR will impact on the Tourism Industry in the …

Knowledge-Based System For Casting Process Selection, Ahmet Er, Edward Sweeney, Voya Kondic Jan 1996

Knowledge-Based System For Casting Process Selection, Ahmet Er, Edward Sweeney, Voya Kondic

Articles

Design of casting entails the knowledge of various interacting factors that are unique to casting process, and, quite often, product designers do not have the required foundry-specific knowledge. Casting designers normally have to liaise with casting experts in order to ensure the product designed is castable and the optimum casting method is selected. This two-way communication results in long design lead times, and lack of it can easily lead to incorrect casting design. A computer-based system at the discretion of a design engineer can, however, alleviate this problem and enhance the prospect of casting design for manufacture. This paper proposes …

Reconsidering The Management Of Marketing, John Murray, Aidan O'Driscoll Jan 1996

Reconsidering The Management Of Marketing, John Murray, Aidan O'Driscoll

Articles

The pace and extent of change in marketing landscape over the past decade has left many questioning the worth of marketing and its tenets. For many marketing educators it is a period of doubt and self-searching about the efficacy and role of the discipline. Yet empirical evidence reveals firms that have not only coped with these changing circumstances but have also found new and imaginative ways of winning competitive advantage. Marketing practice is adopting novel shapes and modes. In the field of management in general, new approaches to understanding and running organisations are being considered. One way of comprehending an …

The Effect Of Postpurchase Communication On Customer Satisfaction, Robert Ward, Darach Turley Jan 1996

The Effect Of Postpurchase Communication On Customer Satisfaction, Robert Ward, Darach Turley

Articles

To most practitioners, effective marketing has invariably meant "looking after the customer". However, attention is being increasingly directed at the preposition in this expression. " Looking after the customer " is more than ever a matter of "looking to the customer afterwards". Customer aftercare can take many forms, from courtesy phone calls to special client get-togethers. It seems reasonable to suppose that each form may have a characteristic impact on customer satisfaction. This article examines one particular form of consumer aftercare, postpurchase written communications. It investigates whether letters sent by a PC retailer to a sample of recent purchases increased …

Perceived Barriers To Innovation In Small To Mediume Enterprises (Smes), Thomas Cooney Jan 1996

Perceived Barriers To Innovation In Small To Mediume Enterprises (Smes), Thomas Cooney

Articles

Innovation is crucial to the successful development of small to medium-sized enterprises- and SMEs themselves are key to the continuing growth of the economy. Yet the owner/managers of many SMEs perceive the existence of many barriers to innovation. Whether such obstacles are real or merely perceived makes little difference to the strategic management and marketing practice of these firms. To illustrate this problem, this article reports both quantitative and qualitative research about barriers to innovation in smaller firms. A postal survey of 375 owner/managers who empoly fewer than 50 people indicated these managers' views and concerns about a range of …

Fuzzy Knowledge-Based Approach To Treating Uncertainty In Inventory Control, Dobrilla Petrovic, Edward Sweeney Jan 1994

Fuzzy Knowledge-Based Approach To Treating Uncertainty In Inventory Control, Dobrilla Petrovic, Edward Sweeney

Articles

Inventory control in complex manufacturing environments encounters various sources of uncertainity and imprecision. This paper presents one fuzzy knowledge-based approach to solving the problem of order quantity determination, in the presence of uncertain demand, lead time and actual inventory level. Uncertain data are represented by fuzzy numbers, and vaguely defined relations between them are modeled by fuzzy if-then rules. The proposed representation and inference mechanism are verified using a large numbers of examples. The results of three representative cases are summarized. Finally a comparison between the developed fuzzy knowledge-based and traditional, probabilistic approaches is discussed.
