Productivity Measurement For Home Health Care Registered Nurses, Lazelle Emminizer Benefield Oct 1989

Productivity Measurement For Home Health Care Registered Nurses, Lazelle Emminizer Benefield

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

The purpose of this study is to develop a productivity measurement applicable to home health registered nurses (RNs) by identifying and quantifying the knowledge and ability variables that define productive nurse practice.

A preliminary set of knowledge and ability variables was identified based on content analysis of interviews with local nurse managers and round I of a three round Delphi procedure, using a purposive sample of nurse managers from nationally preeminent agencies. A randomized national sample of 337 nurse managers was then surveyed to determine the relative value and rank of the knowledge and ability variables. These variables were refined …

Multinomial Approximating Models For Options With K State Variables, Bardia Kamrad, Peter H. Ritchken Sep 1989

Multinomial Approximating Models For Options With K State Variables, Bardia Kamrad, Peter H. Ritchken

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Contingent claims whose values depend on multiple sources of uncertainty arise in many financial contracts and in the analysis of real projects. Unfortunately closed form solutions for these options are rare and numerical methods can be computationally expensive. This article extends the literature on multinomial approximating models. Specifically, new multinomial models are presented, that include as special cases existing models. The more general models are shown to be computationally more efficient.

Quality Control Of Multistage Production Systems, Gad Rabinowitz Aug 1989

Quality Control Of Multistage Production Systems, Gad Rabinowitz

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

A single inspection facility (IF) is capable of multiple inspection tasks. Such IF could be a human inspector or an automated gaging system (e.g. an image analyzer in a machine vision system). In this study we focus on the use of such IF's for detecting 'out-of-control' production stages in multistage production systems. Managing a multi-IF system for this purpose requires three levels of decisions: the capacity (number of IF's needed), the assignment of inspection tasks to each IF, and the inspection schedule of each single IF subsystem. Both economical and quality performance objectives are considered. The study is presented in …

Performance Motivation: Tests Of An Integrated Model, Jerry Kopf Aug 1989

Performance Motivation: Tests Of An Integrated Model, Jerry Kopf

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Different individuals, with the same ability and faced with the same environmental constraints, exert varying amounts of effort, and, to the extent that performance is a function of effort, achieve different levels of performance. This study proposes and tests a theory of motivation which is an integration of what have previously been considered separate, and often conflicting, theories of motivation. The study hypothesizes that motivational differences in effort or performance may be due to either differences in goal level or differences in goal commitment and tests the integrated model against a model which uses assigned goals to predict effort (goal …

Continental Ceramics At Auction: A Statistical Analysis Of The Effects Of Property Designations Upon Final Sale Price, Margaret Scott Wallace Jun 1989

Continental Ceramics At Auction: A Statistical Analysis Of The Effects Of Property Designations Upon Final Sale Price, Margaret Scott Wallace

Theses

This study, Continental Ceramics at Auction: A Statistical Analysis of the Effects of Property Designations Upon Final Sale Price by Margaret Scott Wallace, explores the relationship between auction catalogue property designations and the final sale prices of 18th-century continental ceramics. Conducted as part of the Master of Valuation Sciences program at Lindenwood College, the research focuses specifically on sales held by Sotheby’s and Christie’s in New York between 1984 and 1986.

The central hypothesis posits that identifying the seller—especially when associated with prestige or recognizability—positively influences the auction outcomes. The study utilizes statistical methodologies, including crosstabulations and regression analysis, to …

Management Of Construction Jobsite Productivity : A Self Assessment Approach, Nicos Poliviou Nicolaou May 1989

Management Of Construction Jobsite Productivity : A Self Assessment Approach, Nicos Poliviou Nicolaou

Theses

A critical component of construction project management is the improvement of jobsite productivity. This paper proposes a procedure for use by project managers to assess jobsite productivity performance. The methodology provides a framework which when applied will identify specific aspects of the jobsite where potential productivity improvement is possible. A major feature is its systematic approach which will direct the project manager to the specific resources which when better managed will lead to lower construction costs.

Feasibiltiy, Planning, And Justification Of Fms : A Case Study, Joo Hwan Kim

Theses

FMS production technology, because of its ability to adjust to changes in product demands and produce at competitive costs even on small runs and at above quality levels, has caused its adoption by the major automobile manufacturers. These attributes are of particular interest to Korean automobile manufacturers who due to a small home market need to manufacture in relative small quantities and to export.

This paper considers how such a technology can be implemented. It discusses the key factors to be considered such as strategy, selection and design of the appropriate hardware and software, required organizational changes, and its economic …

The Effects Of Degraded Indoor Air Quality On Employees Working In High Rise Office Buildings, Richard Patrick Luongo May 1989

The Effects Of Degraded Indoor Air Quality On Employees Working In High Rise Office Buildings, Richard Patrick Luongo

Theses

An examination of the effects of poor indoor air quality on workers in high rise office buildings was conducted. These effects are manifested physiologically, psychologically and economically and originate from sources inside and outside the building, as well as from the building's ventilation system. These sources include combustion products, microorganisms, volatile organic chemicals, cigarette smoke and miscellaneous chemicals. Lower productivity and higher absenteeism are the initial results of these effects. If the situation becomes chronic, an erosion of trust between employer and employee can occur which may eventually serve as the basis for litigation, such as worker's compensation claims and …

Optimization Of A Multi-Product, Multi-Period Distribution Network With Fixed Costs, For Refined Petroleum Products, Cynthia Diane Leach May 1989

Optimization Of A Multi-Product, Multi-Period Distribution Network With Fixed Costs, For Refined Petroleum Products, Cynthia Diane Leach

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The distribution network for refined petroleum products is multicommodity in nature since multiple products must share the same transportation resources. To satisfactorily model this network in order to study strategic decisions requires modeling multiple time periods and the use of integer variables for fixed costs. Although the problem can be mathematically formulated as a mixed integer linear program the number of variables makes it difficult to solve using standard linear programming software for real world problems. In order to exploit the structure of the problem, which includes coupling constraints, coupling variables and embedded networks, a three-level decomposition algorithm using the …

The papaw (Carica papaya L.) is a native plant of Central America. It produces its highest yields of good quality fruit in tropical regions.

The tree is short-lived and rarely produces crops for more than two or three years. It is quick growing and soon reaches a maximum height of 5 to 7 m. It is usually unbranched, but may branch after either injury to the top or cutting back.

A Systematic Approach To Countertrade Decision Making Analysis, Kil Ju Park May 1989

A Systematic Approach To Countertrade Decision Making Analysis, Kil Ju Park

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Countertrade literature to date has concentrated ondiscussing the motivations, reasons, and advantages of specificcountertrades and the negotiation contract requirements fortransactions between countries. However, developing ascience-based decision model for countertrade has drawn littleattention in the literature. Increasing importance ofcountertrade in the world market requires a systematic decision-making process in order to reduce the transaction negotiationtime and cost, and increase profitability of a country or aninternational company. This thesis attempts to improve the countertradenegotiation process by recognizing a hierarchy of objectives tobe met in 1) Picking the proper negotiation partner. 2)Selecting the proper quantities of the different goods to betraded. The first objective …

Optimal Decision And Detection In The Decentralized Case, Moula Cherikh May 1989

Optimal Decision And Detection In The Decentralized Case, Moula Cherikh

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This dissertation addresses the problem of optimal decentralized detection or decision-making about some binary states of the world. In the centralized case, the solutions are well known and easily obtained using the classical theory of statistical hypothesis testing. The decentralized case has an additional degree of complexity due to the interrelationships and the dependence between the decision-makers. As formulated here, the model has applications to any problem in which stochastically independent observations are abstracted to inform a central decision-maker, or are used to determine a team action. Examples include: a strategic defense system, a battery of medical tests, or an …

Valid Inequalities For Constrained Assignment Problems, Sunil Dhamankar, Daniel Solow Apr 1989

Valid Inequalities For Constrained Assignment Problems, Sunil Dhamankar, Daniel Solow

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Recently, valid inequalities derived from polytopal structure of the constraints are playing an important role in solving difficult combinatorial problems. These inequalities strengthen the LP relaxation of the problems and improve the lower bounds substantially. It is expected that in an branch-and-cut type algorithm stronger lower bounds will reduce size of the search tree and will minimize computational effort. In this paper , we consider an Assignment Problem with a single Knapsack Constraint (APKC). We present efficient procedures to identify valid inequalities for the APKC from the LP optimal solution. These inequalities can be strengthened by including additional variables for …

A Contingency Analysis Of The Management Control Systems In Tennessee Hospitals /, Cynthia A. Tiegs

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine if the presence and perceived effectiveness of management control systems in nursing departments are contingent on the variables identified in the reviewed literature, The contingent variables investigated were the size of the hospital, the number of services offered, and whether it was profit or not-for-profit. The four control mechanisms examined were; control over inventory and capital equipment, and the staffing and monitoring of nursing care hours. Nursing directors were asked to indicate the effectiveness of each of these management control systems

Flexibility: The Next Competitive Battle: The Manufacturing Futures Survey, Arnoud De Meyer, Jinichiro Nakane, Jeffrey M. Miller, Kasra Ferdows

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Over the past 4 years research teams from INSEAD (Fontainebleau), Boston University and Waseda University (Tokyo) have administered a yearly survey on the manufacturing strategy of the large manufacturers of the three industrialized regions of the world. In this paper the results for the 1986 survey are compared. One of the most striking results of that year’s survey is the emphasis some of the more advanced manufacturers put on their efforts to overcome the trade-off between flexibility and cost efficiency. In particular for the Japanese respondents these attempts become clear. Europeans and North Americans are not yet seizing the opportunity …
