Evaluating Direct-Mail Effectiveness In Building Sales And Attracting New Customers, Carol Beth Spivey Jan 1990

Evaluating Direct-Mail Effectiveness In Building Sales And Attracting New Customers, Carol Beth Spivey

Master's Theses

This independent research project describes the direct-marketing efforts of Ukrop's Super Markets through its Ukrop's Valued Customer® Program, with special emphasis on the "zip code test" conducted in August, 1989. The purpose of this test was to acquire new Ukrop's Valued Customers from a population of non-Ukrop's customers.

While the test did yield a positive net present value, in evaluating the post-test shopping behavior of the two test groups and the control group, the author determined that there were no long-term benefits from these test mailings. Recommendations for improvements (if Ukrop's undertakes a similar campaign in the future) include additional …

A Retail Branch Profitability Measurement Model For The Thrift Industry, Rex L. Smith Iii Jan 1990

A Retail Branch Profitability Measurement Model For The Thrift Industry, Rex L. Smith Iii

Master's Theses

Deregulation of the financial services industry has created a need for management to adapt a different approach to operations. Drastic regulatory and environmental changes have forced thrifts and banks to concentrate on increasing efficiency and core profitability from the retail branch network. Once considered to be highly bureaucratic, financial institutions are trimming back off ice review and focusing on a more decentralized leaner operation. Expensive mergers and large conglomerate financial powerhouses have created a need for increased management controls and reasonable methods of measuring the true profitability of the individual business units within a financial services company.

Trends In Solid-Waste Management And The Implications For The Aluminum Beverage Can, Phil Whitehouse Jan 1990

Trends In Solid-Waste Management And The Implications For The Aluminum Beverage Can, Phil Whitehouse

Master's Theses

The aluminum beverage can market is extremely important for Reynolds Metals Company and other aluminum producers being the single largest end-use market for aluminum in the United States. Shipments of 77.9 billion cans in 1988 accounted for 96% of total beverage can shipments, equivalent to 3.6 billion pounds of input canstock or 21% of the estimated 16.9 billion pounds of U .S. aluminum industry shipments. It is also one of the few aluminum markets that has exhibited consistent growth this decade, with canstock shipments increasing 4.6%/yr.versus 1.8% for all other products. Its success can largely be linked to its recyclability …

Just Say No To Whom?, Ronald J. Gilson Jan 1990

Just Say No To Whom?, Ronald J. Gilson

Faculty Scholarship

"Just say no" is the current rallying cry of those seeking to give target management the unrestricted power to block hostile tender offers. Not surprisingly, the turn of phrase chosen by management leaves ambiguous the precise issue on which the debate should turn: To whom does management want the power to say no? As target management poses the issue, it wants to say no to a raider. The image is of stalwart management protecting shareholders against a marauding outsider. However, that image is seriously misleading. In fact, target management seeks the power to say no to its own shareholders.

The …

The Impact Of Product Line Management For Women's Services In Healthcare, Jill M. Skyles Jan 1990

The Impact Of Product Line Management For Women's Services In Healthcare, Jill M. Skyles

Theses

This paper will focus on the problem of poor utilization of resources in women's health care and how product line management may allow for a cost effective means of providing quality care with optimal use of resources.

In the past decade, hospitals have had to adjust to changes in the payment system. This has forced hospital executives to develop and implement innovative management strategies to continue to provide quality patient care, while keeping costs at a minimum.

Research has attributed the lack of product line management in health care to a basic misunderstanding of product line management. In the past, …

The Effect Of Different Approaches To Goal Setting On Goal Commitment, Eileen Mary Piersa Jan 1990

The Effect Of Different Approaches To Goal Setting On Goal Commitment, Eileen Mary Piersa

All Master's Theses

This study assesses the goal commitment generated by different approaches to goal setting. The participants were the directors, board presidents, staff, board members and volunteers of two non-profit organizations. One group explored their history as an organization, significant events and the impact of those events before carrying out the same goal setting process as the other group. Self-efficacy was measured before the exercise began. Goal commitment was measured after participants prioritized goals and selected subgoals on which to take action. The hypothesis that cognitively reviewing past history would lead to greater commitment was rejected. A second hypothesis that the self-efficacy …

International Cooperative Venture Strategies: Outward Invest, Stephen B. Tallman, Oded Shenkar Jan 1990

International Cooperative Venture Strategies: Outward Invest, Stephen B. Tallman, Oded Shenkar

Management Faculty Publications

The preferred models of overseas outward investment in cooperative ventures were analyzed for 340 small and midsized manufacturing firms in a newly industrialized country (NIC), the Republic of Korea. Firms were examined as sources of investment capital, knowledge, or technology, and locational differences in the methods by which these firms exploit their competitive strengths were addressed. The analysis suggested that firms in the sample have strategic concerns that are different from those of the large multinational companies (MNC) usually studied in this type of research. Current models of the international firm and of cooperative ventures were shown to have a …

The Accuracy In Estimating Truck Class Rates For Logistical Planning, Ronald H. Ballou Jan 1990

The Accuracy In Estimating Truck Class Rates For Logistical Planning, Ronald H. Ballou

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Truck class rates are usually needed in strategic logistical planning, especially for facility location. Using point-to-point transport rates is exact, but for practical reasons it is often necessary to estimate them from distance. Two sources of rate estimating error are examined: (1) the error resulting from the linear approximation of rates from distances and (2) the error associated with estimating distances from shipment origin-destination coordinate points. Suggestions are made as to how the rate estimating error may be minimized. [Published circa 1990.]

An Approach To Planning For Physician Manpower Requirements In Developing Countries Using Dynamic Programming, Fidelis Madeke Ikem, Arnold Reisman Jan 1990

An Approach To Planning For Physician Manpower Requirements In Developing Countries Using Dynamic Programming, Fidelis Madeke Ikem, Arnold Reisman

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

Physician manpower requirements of most developing countries can often be met by developing local training facilities, sending indigenes to train abroad, and/or by recruiting expatriate physicians. Foreign training and having expatriates often involve expenditures of scarce foreign exchange in competition with other development projects. This paper develops a manpower planning model which coordinates physician manpower requirements of a developing country with its capacity to train such physicians along with national objectives to contain costs. The paper presents computational results from a dynamic programming model using the best data available from Nigeria.

A Continued Comparison Of Several Popular Algorithms For Vehicle Routing And Scheduling, Ronald H. Ballou

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

This article reports on the relative performance of several popular heuristic approaches to the vehicle routing and scheduling problem. It is a continuation of a previous study where the problems addressed were small. This research extends the problem size to see if the results would still be valid. Because of disappointing performance in the previous study, two of the algorithms were redesigned to see if their performance would improve.

Developing A Tutoring Module For Presentation Of Computerized Patient Management Problems, Rosa M. Barriga, Katherine Mann, Eugenia P. Vanek, Arnold Reisman, Lawrence Kent

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

[Published circa 1986-1990]. To aid in the design of a computerized teaching system, including a database of patient information, a patient case generator using an expert system shell, and a tutoring module, several existing patient management problem (PMP) presentation or tutoring programs were reviewed. Some attributes were identified as required for a computerized PMP system to constitute an effective instructional tool. After reviewing the literature, four major areas were identified on which to evaluate computerized PMPs: 1) Ability to simulate the Patient/Physician Encounter 2) Provision of Educational Feedback 3) User-Friendliness, Ease of Use, Flexibility 4) Tracking of Student Performance. The …

Resort Motivations For Different Family Life Cycle Stages, Brian J. Hill, Cary Mcdonald, Muzaffer Uysal

Faculty Publications

Motivational differences for resort vacation travel among family life cycle stages have not been addressed in travel research. However, from a marketing standpoint, segmenting the resort market into family life cycle groups can be reasonably important. Linking an identified group of motivat􀁄ons with these stages is the purpose of this article. Descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and analysis of variance are used to evaluate the data. Twenty motivations are . reduced into five motivation factors that coincide with established travel motivations or needs. The importance of family relationship, health and social, and fun and entertainment motivations does differ among respondents single …

What Triggers Revlon?, Ronald J. Gilson, Reinier Kraakman Jan 1990

What Triggers Revlon?, Ronald J. Gilson, Reinier Kraakman

Faculty Scholarship

Delaware's new approach to takeover law is announced in three cases that address different aspects of management's role in the standard drama of defending against a hostile takeover. Unocal Corp. v. Mesa Petroleum Co. scripts a main act for the drama by prescribing a duty to compare the outsider's offer with the universe of other options and, if necessary, to resist the outsider within the guidelines fixed by the proportionality test. Moran v. Household International, Inc. writes a prologue by encouraging management to plan a vigorous defense that can thwart a coercive offer without damaging the company. Finally, Revlon …

Planning: New Imperative, Abid Hussain Dec 1989

Planning: New Imperative, Abid Hussain

IIMB Management Review

Planning must take note of the fact that while the economy is integrating, the indian polity is fragmenting and society is becoming more divisive. The fragmentation of polity and assertion of separate group or community identities are perhaps a part of an inescapable process. How this fragmentation and divisive aspects of society are to be managed in a national perspective, is an
the emerging challenge for planning.

The need right now is to stimulate further growth. Without higher growth, we will end up only redistributing poverty. Taking into account the growth performance of the Indian economy since 1980. It is …

IIMB Management Review

The book by Prof. P. N. Rastogi attempts to analyze a wide range of topics and issues as the title indicates on important concerns of Productivity, Innovation, Management and Development. Not only just of one country, which
in itself would be a very Herculean task, but of 3 different nations, which are complex large societies, each in its own right. The three nations covered by Prof. Rastogi are America, Japan and India. The positive aspects of the book are that it has a very large sweep and a broad coverage in which it tries to raise the relevant and important …

Hindusthan Special Tube Limited: A Case On Turnarround Strategy, N Bhattacharyya

IIMB Management Review

The Hindustan Group of Companies, which originated in 1976 in a leading North Indian metropolis, started with a medium-sized steel rolling mill. Within a short time span of three years, the rolling mill trebled its turnover and raised hopes of becoming a successful group - though with a difference. The Group is not a family concern. It was started by a team of highly qualified professionals-turned-entrepreneurs who had rich industrial experience in India and abroad. The success of the group was mainly attributed to the professionalism, zeal and vision of the entrepreneurs. They attracted talented and experienced individuals from well-known …

India-Japan Joint Ventures-Problem And Prospects, Raj S Dhankar Dec 1989

India-Japan Joint Ventures-Problem And Prospects, Raj S Dhankar

IIMB Management Review

The relations between India and Japan can be traced back to early recorded history. It was, however, only in the 20th Century, and more recently in the post-war period, that greater inter-action has taken place between the two countries. Economic cooperation has taken a new dimension since early 50s. Trade which was the only form of economic cooperation diversitied into technology transfer and investment, third-country ventures, and financial cooperation. The areas of cooperation have vastly expanded. The 1980s saw India and Japan embark on a new path of economic relationship and partnership. Both the Japanese and Indian economy have already …
