University Technology Transfer And Economic Development: Proposed Cooperative Economic Development Agreements Under The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

Technology transfer enables private industry and academia to make practical use of advanced research, development, and technical expertise. Indeed, universities are a rich source of science and technology that can support local government and business development as well as economic growth. Thus, it is essential for research universities to transfer their wisdom to the public for its use and benefit. Today, universities operate in an economic climate that requires both capital and knowledge; takes advantage of government technology initiatives (namely the Bayh- Dole Act);' and serves as a catalyst for the creation of a large number of new, incubated companies. …

High-Tech Transportation Corridors Are In Vogue: Proposed Federal Transportation Policy Amendments, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

When there is an economic downturn, cities are forced to develop a strategy to revitalize. Increasing the transfer of high technology into the marketplace stimulates the economy. High tech industries are industries that include relatively high percentages of scientific and technical workers, or industries that make relatively large expenditures in research and development. "[I]n difficult economic times, political stakeholders in the technology transfer process usually view success in economic impact terms, and often from short-term and parochial perspectives-how many jobs in my state next year?" Examples include the expansion of the suburban space economy in the 1980s that produced new …

Physician Incentives: Managed Care And Ethics, Douglas A. Mains, Alberto Coustasse, Kristine Lykens Jan 2003

Physician Incentives: Managed Care And Ethics, Douglas A. Mains, Alberto Coustasse, Kristine Lykens

Management Faculty Research

The authors review the principle features of the managed care system in an effort to understand the ethical assumptions inherent in managed care. The interrelationships among physician incentives, responsibilities of patients and the physician-patient relationship are examined in light of the ethical concerns identified in the managed care system. The managed care system creates ethical tensions for those who influence the allocation of scare resources. Managed care's administrative controls have increasingly changed the doctor-patient relationship to the businessperson-consumer relationship. Managed care goals of quality and access demand that physicians be both patient advocate and organizational advocate, even though these roles …

Annual Report 2002-2003, Imsa Fund Jan 2003

Annual Report 2002-2003, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

Reeling from an unprecedented eleventh-hour $2.5 million reduction to its state-appropriated operating budget for fiscal year 03, IMSA began the 2002-03 year by making the difficult decisions required. The Board of Trustees cut staff positions, cut the salaries of all remaining employees, increased student fees by 43%, accessed temporary or one-time revenue sources, and reduced programs and services for IMSA students, Illinois educators and other Illinois students.

In the aftermath of the reduction, the IMSA community rallied, choosing once again to stand up and be trailblazers, acting to preserve the academic integrity and distinctiveness of its remaining internal and statewide …

Value Shift: Why Companies Must Merge Social And Financial Imperatives To Achieve Superior Performance, Carol M. Sanchez Jan 2003

Value Shift: Why Companies Must Merge Social And Financial Imperatives To Achieve Superior Performance, Carol M. Sanchez

Peer Reviewed Articles

In Value Shift. Lynn Sharp Paine argues that modern corporations are now expected to meet moral, as well as financial, performance standards to be considered superior performing firms. Paine calls this a return to, or a shift in, values that now emphasize ethics, culture, environmental standards, product safety, and community investment—what students of management might call a broad stakeholder model of the firm. The author, who is professor of leadership and values at the Harvard Business School, reflects on the recent crises in corporate America that began in 2001 with the Enron scandal. These disgraceful misdeeds and the public reaction …

How To Handle The Threat Of Catastrophe, Carol M. Sanchez, Stephen R. Goldberg Jan 2003

How To Handle The Threat Of Catastrophe, Carol M. Sanchez, Stephen R. Goldberg

Peer Reviewed Articles

One of the principal jobs of chief executives is to minimize risk and vulnerability to catastrophic events. Analyzing risk has become more complex since September 11, 2001. In addition to terrorism, other catastrophes can change the course of life as we know it including cyber crime, biological attacks, and the spread of diseases such as SARS. Companies must realign corporate priorities and put the security issue at the forefront, as many companies have done since the 9/11 attacks. Risk management has dealt traditionally with two types of events: known risk and unknown risk. Known risks are events you know exist, …

The Repatriation Of Corporate Female Executives : A European Study, Colette Collins-O'Sullivan Jan 2003

The Repatriation Of Corporate Female Executives : A European Study, Colette Collins-O'Sullivan

Theses

Over the past number of years there has been an increasing recognition that an important element of a successful foreign assignment includes a successful repatriation process. In recent years, empirical studies of women in international management from a European perspective have been carried out, however, the topic of female repatriation still remains a relatively unexplored area. The majority of the existing research on repatriation is taken from a male perspective. The particular focus of this study is the repatriation process from a female perspective. Twenty-seven senior international female managers representing a wide range of industry and service sectors were interviewed. …

Emotional Intelligence Competencies In Physician Leaders: An Exploratory Study, Michael J. Deegan Jan 2003

Emotional Intelligence Competencies In Physician Leaders: An Exploratory Study, Michael J. Deegan

Student Scholarship

A theory of behavioral competencies associated with emotional intelligence that influence job performance, was tested in physicians who hold leadership positions in their organization. An emotional intelligence competency ( EIC ) survey ( the ECI-2 ) that measured eighteen competencies distributed among four cluster groups ( self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship management ) was administered to physician leaders and their supervisors, peers and direct reports. The resulting 360 degree assessment permitted a comparison of the physician leaders self assessment scores with one another and those working closely with them. In addition, independent objective and subjective measures of physician …

Complementary Resources And The Exploitation Of Technological Innovations, David R. King, Jeffrey G. Covin, W. Harv Hegarty Jan 2003

Complementary Resources And The Exploitation Of Technological Innovations, David R. King, Jeffrey G. Covin, W. Harv Hegarty

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Technological innovation often results when the resources of a small firm are combined with those of a large one. This is because small and large firms characteristically possess complementary resources whose combination can facilitate innovation success. The possession of complementary innovation-producing resources by small and large firms helps explain patterns of interaction among firms in dynamic, technology-based industries. Propositions are developed that outline how typical resources of small and large firms can be used to explain industry-level phenomena surrounding technological change.

Market Makers' Recognition Of Key Success Factors In Electronic Marketplaces, Rosemary Stockdale, Craig Standing Jan 2003

Market Makers' Recognition Of Key Success Factors In Electronic Marketplaces, Rosemary Stockdale, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

This study examines the recognition and use of critical success factors by market makers in electronic marketplaces. A content analysis of e-marketplace websites enabled an examination of how these factors have been incorporated into marketplace sites. Evidence of market makers’ awareness of the success factors was found in all the sites although there remain questions and issues to be addressed. Awareness of the need for critical mass and privacy were very evident, but the key factors of security, technological infrastructure and neutrality were identified as areas of concern. Evidence of an awareness of the importance of trust by market makers …

A Proposed Model To Evaluate The Benefits Of Government Sponsored Regional Electronic Marketplaces For Smes: Extending The Updated Delone & Mclean Is Success Model, Denise Gengatharen, Craig Standing Jan 2003

A Proposed Model To Evaluate The Benefits Of Government Sponsored Regional Electronic Marketplaces For Smes: Extending The Updated Delone & Mclean Is Success Model, Denise Gengatharen, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

Despite a growing body of research on the benefits of Internet-based electronic marketplaces, few evaluation models have emerged to examine them. This paper proposes a conceptual model to evaluate the benefits of a government-sponsored regional e-marketplace for small and medium enterprises (SME-REM). The updated DeLone & McLean IS Success Model is extended using data from a literature review on e-marketplaces, SME participation in e-commerce and from an ongoing case study of a government-sponsored SME-REM in Western Australia. The extended model considers a longitudinal approach and the context of the evaluation in determining the net benefits of government-sponsored SME-REMs.

Adoption Of M-Commerce: A Question Of Values?, Patricia Mcmanus, Craig Standing Jan 2003

Adoption Of M-Commerce: A Question Of Values?, Patricia Mcmanus, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

Mobile commerce is experiencing rapid growth. The underlying reasons for adoption of mobile services at the individual level are still unclear. The aim af this paper is to examine theoretical explanations for mobile adoption and to assess the significance of perceived values as an explanatory theory at the individual level. An understanding of consumers' perceived values can be useful for organisations since it has a deeper explanatory capability because it examines the intrinsic rationale in the decision making process. These can be more easily used/or predictive purposes.

Increasing The Adoption Of Electronic Commerce By Smes: Reflections From An Empirical Study, Rosemary Stockdale, Craig Standing Jan 2003

Increasing The Adoption Of Electronic Commerce By Smes: Reflections From An Empirical Study, Rosemary Stockdale, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

It first discusses the drivers and barriers that affect SME participation in e-commerce as identified by the literature, before offering an alternative to the notion oj SMEs as a homogenous group, The authors reflect on the concerns raised in a recent empirical study and offer some conclusions and recommendations.

Market Valuation Of Corporate Diversification In The Presence Of Internal Capital Markets In Emerging Countries, Supannee Buasook Jan 2003

Market Valuation Of Corporate Diversification In The Presence Of Internal Capital Markets In Emerging Countries, Supannee Buasook

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This study examines the valuation of corporate diversification in three emerging countries: Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Over the period of study (1992–2001 for Thailand and 1994–2001 for Indonesia and the Philippines), it is found that there is evidence of diversification discount in all three countries. The largest amount of discount exists in the Philippines (60.1%), followed by Indonesia (25.5%) and Thailand (15.1%).

Then, the sample is divided into two sub-periods: before the crisis (1992–1996) and after the crisis (1997–2001). Before the crisis, the diversification discount existed only in the Philippines, with the average of 49%. There is not enough …

Behavioral Management And Task Performance In Organizations: Conceptual Background, Meta-Analysis, And Test Of Alternative Models, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans Jan 2003

Behavioral Management And Task Performance In Organizations: Conceptual Background, Meta-Analysis, And Test Of Alternative Models, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

In this study, we provide the conceptual background, meta-analyze available behavioral management studies (N = 72) in organizational settings, and examine whether combined reinforcement effects on task performance are additive (sum of individual effects), redundant (combined effects are less than the additive effects), or synergistic (combined effects are greater than the sum of the individual effects). We found a significant overall average effect size of (d.) = .47 (16% improvement in performance; 63% probability of success), and a significant within-group heterogeneity of effect sizes. To account for this variation, we conducted a theory-driven moderator analysis, which indicated that money, feedback, …

What Knowledge Managers Really Do: An Empirical And Comparative Analysis, Arben Asllani, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The advent of information technology has generated not only interest in how to acquire, store and ‘‘mine’’ data, but also how to manage knowledge. Yet, there is still considerable confusion and a lack of understanding of what today’s knowledge managers really do. Continuing a stream of previous research on the behavior activities of traditional managers, this study investigated the relative amount of time today’s knowledge managers (N = 307) spend on traditional management functions, communications, human resources and networking. Besides identifying what knowledge managers really do, this study examined what successful knowledge managers do. Comparisons are then made with …

360-Degree Feedback With Systematic Coaching: Empirical Analysis Suggests A Winning Combination, Fred Luthans, Suzanne J. Peterson Jan 2003

360-Degree Feedback With Systematic Coaching: Empirical Analysis Suggests A Winning Combination, Fred Luthans, Suzanne J. Peterson

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Wanted: High-performance work practices to gain a competitive advantage. An increasingly common answer to this desperate call is 360-degree programs; unfortunately, they have, at best, mixed reviews when empirically assessed. This study found that a way to improve the effectiveness of 360s may be to combine them with coaching focused on enhanced self-awareness and behavioral management. In a small manufacturer, this feedback-coaching resulted in improved manager and employee satisfaction, commitment, intentions to turnover, and at least indirectly, this firm’s performance. This feedback-coaching may be a winning combination to help in the competitive battles in today’s global economy.

A Three Year Journey To Organizational And Financial Health Using The Balanced Scorecard: A Case Study At A Yale New Haven Health System Hospital, Andra Gumbus, Dorothy E. Bellhouse, Bridget Lyons

WCBT Faculty Publications

The article focuses on health care facilities. These facilities are facing financial pressures as the federal government, managed care, and the shift to outpatient care forces downsizing and hospital closures across the nation. This financial pressure translates for many institutions into an increased emphasis on financial metrics to the exclusion of other parameters. This article explores the three year journey to organizational and financial health of Bridgeport Hospital, a member of the Yale New Haven Health System, using the balanced scorecard as a strategic tool.

Parent And Child Perspectives Of Family Leisure Involvement And Satisfaction With Family Life, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Bryan P. Mccormick Jan 2003

Parent And Child Perspectives Of Family Leisure Involvement And Satisfaction With Family Life, Ramon B. Zabriskie, Bryan P. Mccormick

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between family leisure involvement and satisfaction with family life. The sample consisted of 179 families. Data were analyzed at the parent, child, and family level. Findings indicated that family leisure involvement was the strongest multivariate predictor of family satisfaction from the parent perspective, but was not a significant multivariate predictor from the child's perspective. At the family level of measurement, only the block including Core and Balance family leisure variables explained a significant portion of the variance in family satisfaction. History of divorce was a negative multivariate predictor of family …

Strategies For Managing An Aging Workforce, Marie F. Jones Jan 2003

Strategies For Managing An Aging Workforce, Marie F. Jones

The Southeastern Librarian

Demographic trends show that the population of librarians in the U.S. is rapidly aging. This paper examines the ways that library managers can make workplaces more attractive to older librarians in order to encourage them to remain in the workforce beyond retirement age. The article dispels some negative stereotypes of "the older worker" and shows the advantages of retaining individuals with experience and maturity. It also addresses organizational climate, management, and training issues related to older workers.
