Maintaining And Regaining Organizational Legitimacy : The U.S. Securities And Exchange Commission, Karen R. Bryce Jan 2012

Maintaining And Regaining Organizational Legitimacy : The U.S. Securities And Exchange Commission, Karen R. Bryce

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Focusing on organizational legitimacy is an essential element to the survival of an organization. Suchman (1995) suggests that "Legitimacy is a generalized perception or assumption that the actions of an entity are desirable, proper, or appropriate within some socially constructed system of norms, values, beliefs, and definitions" (p. 574). Legitimacy must first be gained and then maintained. If lost, legitimacy must be regained or the organization is unlikely to survive. Organizations can use both symbolic and substantive means of gaining, maintaining or regaining legitimacy. This dissertation explores organizational legitimacy by examining the case of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission …

Disappearing Act? : An Analysis Of The Boundaries Between The Nonprofit & For-Profit Sectors, Simone Grant

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation analyzes the boundaries between the nonprofit and for-profit sectors using network analysis on interlocking directorates. The Emergence Of A Standards Market: Multiplicity Of Sustainability Standards In The Global Coffee Industry, Juliane Reinecke, Stephan Manning, Oliver Von Hagen

The growing number of voluntary standards for governing transnational arenas is presenting standards organizations with a problem. By developing the notion of ‘standards markets,’ this paper examines this tension and studies how different social movement and industry-driven standards organizations compete as well as collaborate over governance in transnational arenas. Based on an in-depth case study of sustainability standards in the global coffee industry, we find that the ongoing co-existence of multiple standards is being promoted by …

Stand Up And Speak Up: Employees' Prosocial Reactions To Observed Abusive Supervision, Manuela Priesemuth

However, this work explores the impact of abusive supervision on third party observers. In addition, because abusive supervision represents a form of organizational injustice, this dissertation extends both work on abusive supervision and third party reactions …

Two main questions are investigated: (1) what stakeholder elements affect salience? (2) Which of these stakeholder elements and attributes are most relevant to the explanation of salience? In a first tense, the nuances of the concept of stakeholder salience (Eesley & Lenox, 2006; Mitchell, Agle, & Wood, …

An Unstable Balance: Exploration, Exploitation, And Innovation Decline During Development, Craig Randall Jan 2012

An Unstable Balance: Exploration, Exploitation, And Innovation Decline During Development, Craig Randall

2012

he ability to innovate is considered central to firm performance and the consensus is that firms should balance exploration and exploitation innovation to succeed. Studies using an exploration/exploitation perspective have gained increasing interest, and have generally concluded that exploration innovation rates are too low. Researchers have concentrated on the early aspects of the innovation planning process: the Search, Portfolio Selection, and Design Phase, and have also studied the benefits of pursuing a serial or parallel pursuit of exploration and exploitation. Largely missing from exploration/exploitation innovation literature, however, is the development phase—which is among the longest and resource intensive phases of …

An Investigation Into Long-Run Abnormal Returns Using Propensity Score Matching, Sunayan Acharya

Theses and Dissertations--Business Administration

This is a study in two parts. In part-1, I identify several methods of estimating long-run abnormal returns prevalent in the finance literature and present an alternative using propensity score matching. I first demonstrate the concept with a simple simulation using generated data. I then employ historical returns from CRSP and randomly select events from the dataset using various alternating criteria. I test the efficacy of different methods in terms of type-I and type-II errors in detecting abnormal returns over 12- 36- and 60- month periods. I use various forms of propensity score matching: 1--5 Nearest Neighbors in Caliper using …

Weiser Carrots And Sticks: Motivation Beyond Money At The Shakedown Café, Julian A. Martinez Jan 2012

Weiser Carrots And Sticks: Motivation Beyond Money At The Shakedown Café, Julian A. Martinez

CMC Senior Theses

It is generally assumed that monetary incentivization is the most effective means of motivating organizationally-beneficial behaviors. However, evidence is being uncovered that indicates that human motivation may be a much more complicated facet of the human psyche. The purpose of this study is to examine the deeper underpinnings that drive people work that might lie beyond financial rewards. In order to do this, the Shakedown Café, a student-run restaurant on Pitzer College’s campus, will be examined. This specific organization is of particular interest because it does …

Emerging Patterns In 21st Century Leadership: An Exploration Of Generational Normative Collisions, Donna L. Haeger

Student Scholarship

In the current work environment, younger workers in leadership positions are overseeing workers much older than themselves. Few empirical studies have focused on the emerging patterns of leadership associated with the relationship between young managers and older workers. To address this gap in the literature, we conducted a qualitative study based on semistructured interviews with thirteen managers under the age of thirty six and thirteen employees at least twenty years older. The goal of our study is to generate grounded theory about the "lived experiences" of contemporary young managers leading older subordinates. Our exploratory findings show that the task focused …

Out Of Control: The Impact Of Unaddressed Affective Conflict On Sme Board Stability, Solange Charas Jan 2012

Out Of Control: The Impact Of Unaddressed Affective Conflict On Sme Board Stability, Solange Charas

Student Scholarship

Seventy-seven percent of low corporate governance ratings for U.S. publicly-traded companies are attributable to poorly-performing boards (GovernanceMetrics International (GMI), 2005). Research suggests a relationship between governance quality and financial performance with evidence of better performance by active vs. passive boards. While most governance research has focused on board member demographics to predict governance quality, few scholars have addressed board dynamics. Adopting a grounded theory approach to address this deficit, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 board directors of U.S. publically traded small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with high and low independently attributed governance ratings. Results indicate directors in both groups …

The Second Glass Ceiling Impedes Women Entrepreneurs, Douglas A. Bosse, Porcher L. Taylor Iii Jan 2012

The Second Glass Ceiling Impedes Women Entrepreneurs, Douglas A. Bosse, Porcher L. Taylor Iii

Management Faculty Publications

The glass ceiling phenomenon that impedes the advancement of talented women professionals into senior executive roles inside large corporations is widely recognized in society, studied in the management literature, taught in business schools, and tangibly felt by many women executives. Outside the corporate setting, we show that a second glass ceiling exists for women entrepreneurs and women small business owners. This second glass ceiling is a gender bias that obstructs women-owned small firms from accessing the financial capital required to start new firms and fuel the growth of existing firms. This paper (1) defines the second glass ceiling phenomenon, (2) …

The Effect Of Cognition, Institutions, And Long Term Orientation On Entrepreneurial Ethical Behavior: China Vs. U.S., Sibin Wu, Arpita Joardar

Management Faculty Publications

This paper presents a theoretical framework to examine if entrepreneurs think and behave differently at various phases of a venture, namely opportunity exploration and exploitation stages. It is also proposed that there is a difference between entrepreneurs in China and in the U.S. due to institutional voids. Furthermore, we argue that the difference increases across the two stages of the entrepreneurial process. Specifically, at the exploration stage, entrepreneurs in China and the U.S. behave similarly when ethics is concerned. However, entrepreneurial unethical behaviors seem to be more rampant at the exploitation stage in China compared with that in the U.S. …
