"Language Attitudes In Alcalá De Henares Towards Immigrants" And "Adverbial Adjectives: A Usage-Based Approach", Lauren Elaine Truman
Theses and Dissertations
This study is part of the IN.MIGRA-2 CM project, which studies the sociolinguistic integration of the immigrant population of Madrid. The present study focuses on the language attitudes of 16 residents of Alcalá de Henares, a community of Madrid. The participants were asked to rate their level of agreement with the following affirmations: (1) The Spanish of Madrid is more correct than the forms of speech of Latin American immigrants; (2) Mastery of the Spanish language is the principal demonstration of the integration of immigrants; (3) Immigrants of Latin American origin are integrated because they speak the same language. The …
Target Practice: Exploring Student Tl/L1 Use In Paired Interactions, Michelle Anderson
Target Practice: Exploring Student Tl/L1 Use In Paired Interactions, Michelle Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Teachers of foreign languages typically encourage their students to speak in the target language (TL) often, but due to various factors, this is not always achieved. Some reasons might include insufficient vocabulary, lack of topic knowledge, embarrassment, or simple unwillingness. Much of the existing research observes uses of the TL or native language (L1). The purpose of this study was to examine how often students use the TL in paired interactions and whether that amount has any relationship to the students' oral proficiency at the end of the course. In a SPAN 105 course at Brigham Young University, 27 students …

Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback And Linguistic Accuracy Of University Learners Of Spanish, Maria Teresa Company
Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluated the efficacy of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback (DWCF) on advanced students' writing accuracy of Spanish. This method focuses on manageable, meaningful, timely and constant feedback. Previously, DWCF was studied in the context of English as a second language. The current study investigated the efficacy of DWCF in the context of students who were enrolled in an advanced Spanish grammar class at the university level. A comparative study was conducted measuring students' writing accuracy who received the DWCF against students' writing accuracy who did not receive this feedback methodology. Results showed that there was not a significant difference …
What Do Students Think? University Spanish Students' Experience Communicating Online With Native Spanish Speakers, Daniel K. Bates
What Do Students Think? University Spanish Students' Experience Communicating Online With Native Spanish Speakers, Daniel K. Bates
Theses and Dissertations
Modern technology has provided foreign language teachers with several methods of connecting their classes and students to native speakers of target languages. Much of the existing research about these online conversations is focused on changes in students' proficiency or cultural sensitivity. Although valuable, the research is lacking in understanding students' experience online including positive and negative feelings, challenges, and students' overall opinion of the exchanges' usefulness. This study was conducted in an effort to better understand students' experience communicating online with native speakers. A third semester Spanish class at Brigham Young University consisting of 18 students was selected as a …
José, Joe, Zé Carioca: Walt Disney's Good Neighbor Colonial "Monument" In Brazil, Andrew Kelly Nelson
José, Joe, Zé Carioca: Walt Disney's Good Neighbor Colonial "Monument" In Brazil, Andrew Kelly Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
Although Walt Disney's early animated feature films were successful, a variety of economic, operational, and external forces required him to continually be on the cutting edge of new ideas and technologies in order for his studio to continue operations. Latin America became the studio's source of inspiration in the early 1940s, sprouting from Walt Disney's involvement with the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs. Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros were the result. While many critics have decried Disney's involvement in Latin America as being an apparatus of cultural imperialism and economic exploitation, they almost universally give him credit …

Transcription And Translation Of A Letter From The Japonica Sinica 85 Of The Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu, Serena Rachelle Terrazas
Theses and Dissertations
This project is a transcription and translation of a letter from the Japonica Sinica 85 collection of the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu. It was written by an unidentified Jesuit who recounts three years of history (1655-1657) of the Tonkin kingdom (in present-day Vietnam), replacing the annual letters from those years that had been lost at sea. The account includes descriptions of their wars with Cochinchina, the succession of the kingship, and the funeral and burial of the Lê-Triṇh lord, Triṇh Tráng.
The Pilgrimage To Meaning Along The Camino De Santiago, Matthew Carey Greenhalgh
The Pilgrimage To Meaning Along The Camino De Santiago, Matthew Carey Greenhalgh
Theses and Dissertations
As Christianity spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages, many believers attributed miraculous tales to the Virgin Mary and saints. In Camino de Santiago folklore, the Virgin Mary and Saint James intercede on behalf of pilgrims who cannot resolve a crisis without divine assistance. The Codex Calixtinus, a twelfth-century manuscript, contains such a story that occurs in Toulouse called "The Hanged Pilgrim." In this miracle, an innkeeper frames a pilgrim for theft and the local magistrate sentences the accused to hang as a consequence. However, the Virgin Mary and Saint James spare the pilgrim's life because of his …

Perspectives Of Foreign Language Teachers On Influences, Challenges, And Practices Affecting Language Choice, Brant M. Lloyd
Perspectives Of Foreign Language Teachers On Influences, Challenges, And Practices Affecting Language Choice, Brant M. Lloyd
Theses and Dissertations
In light of the 2010 recommendation of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages that teachers use the target language (TL) "as exclusively as possible," teachers face the necessity of promoting target language use and assessing how their language choices influence their students. The purpose of this study was to analyze teachers' perspectives and practices of whether to use students' first language or the target language. Data from over 100 foreign language teachers, predominantly those in the K-12 sector, were collected through a survey in order to measure how teachers manage the phenomenon of language choice. The findings …

Comparing The Opi And The Opic: The Effect Of Test Method On Oral Proficiency Scores And Student Preference, Troy L. Cox, Gregory L. Thompson, Nieves Knapp
Faculty Publications
While studies have been done to rate the validity and reliability of the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Oral Proficiency Interview–Computer (OPIc) independently, a limited amount of research has analyzed the interexam reliability of these tests, and studies have yet to be conducted comparing the results of Spanish language learners who take both exams. For this study, 154 Spanish language learners of various proficiency levels were divided into two groups and administered both the OPI and OPIc within a 2-week period using a counterbalanced design. In addition, study participants took both a pre- and postsurvey that gathered data about their …

Translating Andrew Kaufman's 'Signs Of The Cross' (Back) Into Spanish, Berenice Ventura Fernandez
Theses and Dissertations
The Never Ending Confession: The Confessional Mode In Two Novels By Mempo Giardinelli, Ryan Russel Hill
The Never Ending Confession: The Confessional Mode In Two Novels By Mempo Giardinelli, Ryan Russel Hill
Theses and Dissertations
In the years following the military dictatorship in Argentina many novels were published that spoke about the violence, terror, and traumas experienced during the Junta's rule. These texts deal with the theme of memory and retell the traumas of the past as a form of mourning. Such novels look back to the past in an effort to redeem it. In this essay I explore the use of the confessional mode in postdictatorial literature as a vehicle for the task of mourning. In two of his novels, Qué solos se quedan los muertos (1985) and Cuestiones interiores (2003), Argentine author Mempo …

Tareas Electivas Educacionales: Una Forma De Motivar El Aprendizaje Independiente En El Aula De Ele, Carina Silvia Coria
Theses and Dissertations
The Infectious Monster: Borders And Contagion In Yeti And Lágrimas En La Lluvia, Kiersty Lemon
The Infectious Monster: Borders And Contagion In Yeti And Lágrimas En La Lluvia, Kiersty Lemon
Theses and Dissertations
Monsters are disruptive characters, who cross boundaries and blend categories. They come in various kinds: Non-human monsters, such as Dracula, created-by-human monsters like Frankenstein, human monsters like Hitler, and more-than-human monsters such as the X-men. These monsters can either be dangerous or helpful to humanity. Dangerous monsters appear as infectious, viral forces, while helpful monsters are inoculative forces for positive change. In either case, they penetrate the borders set up between normatively separate categories. Critics and authors have long realized the connection between heroes and monsters, often portraying them as necessary to one another, as two sides of a single …

Sobredosis (De)Generacional: Fracaso En El Cuento "Pelando A Rocío" De Alberto Fuguet, Paula Antonieta Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
The Failure Of A Latin American Bestseller: Researching The Reception Of João Guimarães Rosa In The United States, Andrew Kelly Nelson, James Krause
The Failure Of A Latin American Bestseller: Researching The Reception Of João Guimarães Rosa In The United States, Andrew Kelly Nelson, James Krause
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Of all Latin American authors, the works of João Guimarães Rosa present some of the greatest difficulties for translators. He experienced laudable critical success throughout Latin American and Europe, but–for reasons that are under investigation–received a tepid reception in the United States. This project was developed to examine the extent to which the translation and editorial processes played in this poor reception by the US readership by examining the extensive communication that the author maintained with the translator of his work. Such correspondence is unique in that it documents the collaborative translation process between the author and his English-language translator, …
Comparison Of Language Gains Across Classroom, Foreign Language Housing, And Study Abroad Environments, Kari Tanner, Dr. Jeffrey Turley
Comparison Of Language Gains Across Classroom, Foreign Language Housing, And Study Abroad Environments, Kari Tanner, Dr. Jeffrey Turley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
When it comes to learning a foreign language, study abroad contexts have generally been assumed to produce the best results. However, with rising program costs it becomes necessary to evaluate alternate options as well. The three main language learning contexts are classroom, foreign language housing (domestic immersion) and study abroad. While many studies have analyzed language gains in these settings independently of each other, little research has actually compared the gains across these three environments. I chose to conduct this research with learners of Italian, so I started by finding participants in each of the three contexts. The classroom learners …

A Unit On The Family And Traditions: For Middle School Spanish Classes, Rebecca A. Proper
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project for a Master of Arts in Spanish Pedagogy consists of a four-week, ten-lesson unit on culture in the family. This unit is designed for a middle school Spanish I class and is intended to supplement Chapter 5 in the Realidades textbook in the cultural aspect of learning a foreign language. The intention is to engage students to consider cultural perspectives, or the “why” cultures do what they do. The lesson plans from the unit are based on backward design and are structured around essential questions including, “What constitutes an ideal family?” An emphasis is placed on cultural …

Partiendo De Ibi: La Traducción Del Antiguo Adverbio Pronominal Enlas Primeras Biblias Romanceadas Castellana E Italianaa Partir De La Vulgata, Luis Fernando Vazquez
Theses and Dissertations
Fantastic Sexism? Subverting The Femme Fatale And Femme Fragile In The Fantastic Fiction Of Machado De Assis, Jordan Benjamin Jones
Fantastic Sexism? Subverting The Femme Fatale And Femme Fragile In The Fantastic Fiction Of Machado De Assis, Jordan Benjamin Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, arguably the most famous Brazilian author, has been studied perhaps more than any other figure in Brazilian literature. Because Machado's novels are so exceptional, many of his good short stories have been neglected by scholars, particularly those categorized by some as “fantastic.” This study attempts to fill that gap by analyzing the most prominent female characters in Machado's fantastic fiction. After providing a brief overview of the term fantastic and explaining how the stories used qualify as fantastic, this study identifies several tropes into which their female characters fit. Chapter 1: The Femme Fragile analyzes …
Transcription And Translation Of Annuae 1626-1645, From The Jesuit Annual Letters In Tonkin Vietnam, Debra Taylor Banov
Transcription And Translation Of Annuae 1626-1645, From The Jesuit Annual Letters In Tonkin Vietnam, Debra Taylor Banov
Theses and Dissertations
This project consists of a transcription and translation of the Annuae 1626-1645, written by an unidentified Jesuit missionary in Tonkin (Vietnam). The document appears to have been used as a source text for António Cardim's book Batalhas da Companhia de Jesus, and, as a result, there are many similarities between the two works. Despite these similarities, the Annuae contains new and insightful information on the state of the Tonkin mission as well as an interesting outsider's perspective on Vietnamese politics in the early 17th century.
Dialect Contact: Lexical Availability As A Measure Of The Acquisition Of Characteristics From Another Dialect, Ross James Cairns
Dialect Contact: Lexical Availability As A Measure Of The Acquisition Of Characteristics From Another Dialect, Ross James Cairns
Theses and Dissertations
This study uses lexical availability as a way in which to measure the level of an individual's acquisition of the dialect of their spouse. Although lexical availability studies are in abundance, to the author's knowledge, this is one of the few, if not the only, type of study that uses lexical availability to measure dialect contact.
Lexical availability studies attempt to determine the most readily available lexical items in an individual's lexicon. This study implemented standard methodologies in order to determine whether dialect contact was more likely when specific topics were chosen. That is, if the topic in question was …
Pluralidad De Voces Y Conciencias Independientes En Dos Obras De Lope De Vega, Jesus Alejandro Lopez Villegas
Pluralidad De Voces Y Conciencias Independientes En Dos Obras De Lope De Vega, Jesus Alejandro Lopez Villegas
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the relationship between the plurality of polyphonic and independent voices and consciousnesses, a Mikhail Bakhtin's concept, in two plays by Lope de Vega. El maestro de Danzar y El bobo del colegio are two of his least known and studied. Both plays present protagonists, simple citizens, which pretend to court two noble ladies. Under these circumstances, they are forced to avoid social rejection, issue guaranteed by their humble lineage. In order to complete their undertaking, they disguise as a dance teacher and a university fool. This process shields them from, the above mentioned, traditional disapproval they are …

String Literature is a popular form of poetry produced mainly in the northeastern section of Brazil. Heir to the orality of the Portuguese ballads, cordel took root particularly in the northeastern country side of Brazil and for historical and social factors spread throughout the country. This study intends to revisit the main studies done on string literature to analyze its development in Brazil, to highlight cordel's enormous contribution as popular art, memory and identity, in the construction process of the Brazilian Northeastern people.
Visualizing Borges: Figures Of Interpretation, Kempton John Cox
Visualizing Borges: Figures Of Interpretation, Kempton John Cox
Theses and Dissertations
In this work I explore the geometry found both in the narrative structures and the internal shapes proposed in Jorge Luis Borges’ short stories and seek to arrive at new interpretations of those works by mapping out—in graphical form—the shapes found therein. I move from basic two-dimensional shapes (lines, triangles, quadrilaterals) to those involving the element of temporality and atemporality (circles, interruptive loops, chiasmus) to shapes dealing with repetition—both geometric and temporal—and eternity (labyrinths, fractals, and Alephs). In each case and for each short story analyzed, either an existent interpretation is favored or a new interpretation is set forth.

Stressed Syllables In Argentine Spanish In Queens, Nyc: Lengthening And F0 Early Peak Alignment, Giselle Gimenez Meiling
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the intonation of Argentine Spanish in Queens, NYC, with the goal of verifying if the unique prosody of producing early peak alignments in the F0 of Argentine Spanish, specifically of Porteños (those from Buenos Aires), is maintained among the intense contact influences with other varieties of Spanish in the area. Previous studies have reported this early peak alignment phenomenon in the Spanish spoken in Buenos Aires, and this paper strives to see if this still occurs among Argentine Spanish speakers in New York City. The Buenos Aires speakers were compared with other native Argentine Spanish speakers in …
