A Importância De Nara Leão Para O Descobrimento De Grandes Compositores: O Desenvolvimento Da Música Popular Brasileira, Renata Godoy Tymoschenko
A Importância De Nara Leão Para O Descobrimento De Grandes Compositores: O Desenvolvimento Da Música Popular Brasileira, Renata Godoy Tymoschenko
Theses and Dissertations

“Yo El Rey”: Philip Ii’S Anglo-Spanish War Correspondence To Diego De Orellana De Chaves And Others, April 1592 – December 1592, Dallin V. Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis transcribes and translates the war correspondence of King Philip II from the year 1592. The original manuscripts are held at the Harold B. Lee Library in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections (Brigham Young University, Provo, UT). The original manuscripts have been diplomatically transcribed meaning that the transcription respects the original orthography, accentuation, abbreviations, and word divisions. For easy comparison, a facsimile of each manuscript has been provided and appears before its corresponding transcription. The translation strategy used is a modified version of a “fluent translation” as described by Lawrence Venuti. Instead of removing all foreign aspects of …
Teaching Culture Using E-Portfoliosin A 4th-Semester University Spanish Classroom, Ricardo Gustavo Cetz
Teaching Culture Using E-Portfoliosin A 4th-Semester University Spanish Classroom, Ricardo Gustavo Cetz
Theses and Dissertations
The World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages (ACTFL, 2014) encourage teachers to help their students use the target language to “investigate, explain, and reflect” on the relationships between cultural products, practices, and perspectives. However, while most language instructors agree that language and culture should be connected, many fail to teach culture explicitly because they are so focused on the language components of their courses. Of those who do teach culture explicitly, many either teach only about the cultural products and not the perspectives, or they teach the culture in English because of its complexity. This project explores the use of e-portfolios …
Crisis Masculina En Dos Cuentos De Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Lucía Villarreal
Crisis Masculina En Dos Cuentos De Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Lucía Villarreal
Theses and Dissertations
Pedagogical And Ekphrastic Elements In The Story Of The Predestined Pilgrim And His Brother Reprobate By Father Alexandre De Gusm, M Cecilia Fischer
Pedagogical And Ekphrastic Elements In The Story Of The Predestined Pilgrim And His Brother Reprobate By Father Alexandre De Gusm, M Cecilia Fischer
Theses and Dissertations
The object of this thesis is to analyze the presence of the pedagogical ekphrastic elements in the novel The Story of The Predestined Pilgrim and his Brother Reprobate by Father Alexandre de Gusmmão. In the past this novel has been an obscure masterpiece outside the circle of those who study early Portuguese language works. In the last half century there has been a crescendo of the study of this novel as more scholars have taken an interest in the pilgrimage motif and in particular using this novel in comparative literature. A monumental contribution to bring this novel out of obscurity …
Investigaciónn De Actitudes Sociolingüísticas Hacia El Valenciano Y El Castellanoen Agost, José Manuel Hernández Gonzalez
Investigaciónn De Actitudes Sociolingüísticas Hacia El Valenciano Y El Castellanoen Agost, José Manuel Hernández Gonzalez
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the attitudes of the inhabitants of Agost towards Castilian and Valencian Catalan. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire distributed among a representative sample of Agostenses between April and June 2013 and analyzed according to three independent variables: sex, age and education. It was hypothesized that attitudes would covary with these variables and, in general, this proved to be the case.
The Production Of Voice Onset Time In Voiceless Stops By Spanish-English Natural Bilinguals, Ivan K. Banov
The Production Of Voice Onset Time In Voiceless Stops By Spanish-English Natural Bilinguals, Ivan K. Banov
Theses and Dissertations
This study analyzes the production of Voice Onset Time (VOT) of natural Spanish-English bilinguals. VOT is a linguistic characteristic that measures the amount of aspiration occurring after the release of a stop consonant. In terms of VOT, English stop consonants differ substantially from their Spanish equivalents. This study analyzes whether or not natural bilinguals produce VOTs that approximate VOTs of monolingual speakers of each language. Participants completed two surveys to quantify their linguistic dominance in English and Spanish. They were then recorded performing similar speaking tasks in both languages. The conclusions show that natural bilinguals do not produce their English …

Transcription And Translation Of A Yearly Letter From 1619 Found In The Japonica Sinica 71 From The Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu, Jason Michael Wilber
Theses and Dissertations
This project is a transcription and translation of a 21-page annual letter written about the Cochinchina mission for the year 1619 by the Jesuit missionary João Rodrigues Girão. In 1619 the Cochinchina mission consisted of central and southern Vietnam. The two Jesuit residents at this time were located in the city of Faifo, in the province of Cacham, and Nuocman, in the province of Pulocamby. A semi-diplomatic and diplomatic transcription style is used for the transcription, with a dynamic-equivalent (sense-for-sense) style used for the translation.
S-Cape Testing For Higher Proficiency Levels And Other Factors That Influence Placement At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Robinson
S-Cape Testing For Higher Proficiency Levels And Other Factors That Influence Placement At Brigham Young University, Elizabeth Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
Brigham Young University (BYU) first implemented the Spanish Computer Adaptive Placement Examination (S-CAPE) during the Fall Semester of 1986 and it has been used ever since. The S-CAPE was designed to determine course placement into beginning and intermediate classes for students who have previously studied Spanish. A 10% increase occurred this year (2014) in students who have served missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many of these returned missionaries gained language proficiency on their missions, and some go to BYU to begin or continue their studies. Because of the increase in enrollment of students with intermediate …
Dark Satire As Political Criticism In Dias' Gomes O Bem-Amado , Mark Jeffrey Nelson
Dark Satire As Political Criticism In Dias' Gomes O Bem-Amado , Mark Jeffrey Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the Dias Gomes' play turned telenovela, O Bem-Amado, to demonstrate the use of satire and dark humor to make political commentary during the tumultuous sociopolitical era in Brazil from the early 1960s through the late-1970s. This era in Brazil is characterized by the overthrow of the leftist democratically elected civilian government by a corporate-backed hardline military dictatorship in the early part of 1964, which lasts for approximately 20 years. The result of this authoritative military rule causes many artists and intellectuals that oppose the dictatorship's repression to flee into exile abroad or adapt to the changing sociopolitical …

The actual lesson plans are included as appendices.
21st Century Skills And Principles Of Flow In The Foreign Language Classroom, Carolina Benito Cox
21st Century Skills And Principles Of Flow In The Foreign Language Classroom, Carolina Benito Cox
Theses and Dissertations
Flow theory explains the conditions for optimal engagement (enjoyment, interest, and concentration). There are three types of engagement: cognitive, emotional, and behavioral. When these are combined and present at their peak, flow takes place. In the era of information, media, and technology, current concerns in education include an increasing student disengagement and disaffection. Recently, educational organizations have focused on 21st century skills and the importance of developing these in order to better engage with society. This mixed study explores the relationship between the inclusion of 21st century skills in an L2 task and the level of engagement of students, and …

Acquisition Of L2 Phonology: An Acoustic Analysis Of The Centralization Of L2 Spanish /A/ In Adult L1 English-Speaking Learners, Alexander Charles Aldrich
Theses and Dissertations
Although many studies have been carried out regarding the acquisition of Spanish as a second language, very few have focused on the acquisition of Spanish vowels. Studies that have compared the L2 production of Spanish vowels in learners who have spent an extensive time living abroad versus at home learners are scarce at best. The present study hopes to add to the literature by comparing the L2 pronunciation of the Spanish /a/ in these two groups using an acoustic analysis with the aid of speech-signal processing software and the inclusion of a native group for comparison. In addition, it hopes …

Machado De Assis: Uma Nova Leitura Através Das Lentes Do Corpus Lingu?Stico, Liege Christiane Pradera
Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to explore what types of reading strategies university Spanish students use during literary readings tasks and their perceptions of the reading strategies they use. This case study employed stimulated recall protocol interviews, student reading logs and student notes in texts. Interviews were conducted within 24 hours of the reading, while reading logs and notes were completed during the reading. The data collected were analyzed for …
L2 Spanish Speakers' Attitudes Toward Selected Features Of Peninsular And Mexican Spanish, Grant Perry Stotts
L2 Spanish Speakers' Attitudes Toward Selected Features Of Peninsular And Mexican Spanish, Grant Perry Stotts
Theses and Dissertations
Many studies have been done on language attitudes, including attitudes toward languages in contact, various dialects of a language, nonnative speech, and attitudes of second-language (L2) learners toward the language that they are learning. Typically the studies of second-language learning deal with the attitudes toward the language in general rather than toward specific varieties within the language. The present study measures the attitudes of L2 learners of Spanish who lived in Spain, Mexico and Argentina toward native speakers from Spain and Mexico. The nonnative speakers listened to recordings of four native speakers, a male and a female from Spain, and …
Parisina: Literary And Historical Perspectives Across Six Centuries, John Scoville Evans
Parisina: Literary And Historical Perspectives Across Six Centuries, John Scoville Evans
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the relationship between the many literary texts referring to the deaths of Ugo d'Este and Parisina Malatesta, who were executed in Ferrara in 1425 in accordance with an order by Niccolò III d'Este after he discovered their incestuous relationship. The texts are divided in three categories: (1) the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italian novellas and their translations; (2) the seventeenth-century Spanish tragedy; and (3) the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Romantic works. Although these categories divide the various texts chronologically, they also represent a thematic grouping as the texts within each category share common themes that set them apart from …
On Spanish Loanword And Loanblends In Hawai'i Creole English, Robert N. Smead
On Spanish Loanword And Loanblends In Hawai'i Creole English, Robert N. Smead
Faculty Publications
Hawai'i Creole English (HCE) has been the object of much linguistic research. Virtually all researchers agree that its principal lexical sources include English, Hawaiian and Japanese. Other languages, such as Chinese and Portuguese, have also contributed. To date, however, few publications have considered Spanish as an important lexical source for HCE. The research reported herein attempts to remedy that oversight by considering ten putative loanwords and loanblends thought to derive from Spanish. These include ethnic markers associated with and local dishes brought by Filipino and Puerto Ricans immigrants in the early twentieth century. By documenting cultural traditions and consulting authoritative, …

This project entitled “Out of Obscurity” required the transcription of twenty letters dictated by King Philip II of Spain in 1592 during Spain’s naval wars against England and France. Most of the documents generated by Philip II, also known as the “paper king” for his prolific output of official documents, are carefully housed in the Archive of Simancas near Valladolid, Spain, making them difficult for U.S. students to access and study. However, through a generous donation made to the Department of Collections and Manuscripts in Harold B. Lee Library of Brigham Young University, professors and students alike have the opportunity …

The preliminary report of the findings of this study were written in Spanish so that the data could be of use to the local health organizations and the University of Acapulco Medical School in Guerrero, Mexico. Although the findings were written in Spanish, we do not want to limit the findings of our project to the Spanish literate population and for this reason we have written this brief summary in English.

Philology is a broad field that includes the study of a language’s history, especially that language’s process of evolution over an extended period of time. Romance Philology specifically covers the Romance languages, i.e. those European languages that have Latin roots. These languages include Spanish (Castilian), Catal

The Evolution Of The Gaucho, Josh Whitlock, Dr. David Laraway
The Evolution Of The Gaucho, Josh Whitlock, Dr. David Laraway
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The term gaucho refers to the national hero of Argentina and Uruguay—a once free-roaming and self-sufficient individual, roughly the equivalent of the cowboy in the United States. These heroes are of central importance to the countries they have traditionally inhabited. A quote at the entrance of the Museo del Gaucho y la Moneda in Montevideo, Uruguay reads (as translated to English) “To study the gaucho is to put your hand in the open chest of the fatherland and to touch, to feel warm and alive the beating of it’s own heart.” The gaucho is an intriguing and multifaceted figure with …

Alfredo had been in the United States for only three weeks when he began in the local public school in Provo, Utah. Native to central Mexico, Alfredo spoke no English. Assigned to work with Alfredo as a volunteer, I began by asking his teacher how I could help or where I should begin with his schooling. She responded desperately, “I have no idea!” Even though my Spanish minimized the language barrier, the teacher was still frustrated as to where she could begin with her new student. We realized that, to help Alfredo adjust, we not only had to overcome the …

La Dama Duende: Re-Creation Of Spanish Golden Age Theatre, Jason Yancey, Dr. Dale Pratt
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During the 16th and 17th centuries, Spain experienced a literary explosion of unequalled comparison. Dozens of authors lent their pens to create some of the most brilliant and influential works of all time, such as Cervantes’ Don Quijote de la Mancha, or characters such as Tirso de Molina’s widely popular don Juan from El burlador de Sevilla. This era of greatness, known as the Spanish Golden Age, was perhaps most renowned for its quantity and quality of theatre works. Sadly, these magnificent plays are rarely performed on a modern stage. Our objective for this project was not only to …

A Multimedia Collection Of Spanish Dialectical Variations, Jonathan Whiting, Dr. Orlando Alba
Journal of Undergraduate Research
At least twenty countries on three different continents recognize Spanish as an official language and this doesn’t include countries like the United States that still have a sizeable Spanish-speaking population. With so much ethnic and geographic diversity in the Spanish-speaking world, it is only natural to expect a great deal of linguistic diversity as well.

A Journey To The Land Of Jorge Luis Borges, Susan Stewart, Dr. Thomas Lyon
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My relationship with Jorge Luis Borges and his prose and poetry began on a river trip I took two months after I had purchased his work of fictions Labyrinths. I had many hours floating down the river to read, digest and love his thrilling, enigmatic prose. His words were playful and tricky. His mysterious and mathematically written works mocked the stable and expected.
