Preservice Teachers Perceptions Of Literature: A Study In A University Spanish Literature Class For Future Spanish Teachers, Stephanie Chantall Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study gave insight on the benefits that a university literature course for future Spanish teachers could contribute to preservice teachers as part of their preparation program. Nine university students participated in this study as they were the ones enrolled in this first-time offered university literature course for Spanish teachers. Data were collected from pre- and post-questionnaires, journals, and course observations. The findings suggested that the preservice teachers grew in pedagogical content knowledge, literary content, resources and strategies, and felt an overall sense of preparedness to use literary sources in their future classrooms

Attitudes Of University Students In Castellón De La Plana Toward Valencian Catalan And Castilian, Jeannette Alicia Fuhriman

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated language attitudes toward Valencian Catalan and Castilian among university affiliates in Castellón de la Plana, Spain. One hundred informants completed an online survey regarding attitudes toward and uses of Valencian and Castilian in various situations. The results were first analyzed globally, then again based on the independent variables of age, sex, and mother tongue. The findings suggest that overall, informants held positive attitudes toward Valencian and Castilian and believed that it was important that the local language be preserved and passed down to the next generation. University-aged participants, those whose first language was either Valencian or both …

Spanish Language Learning And Supporting Strategies In Mixed Classrooms At The Secondary Level, Jorge Vasquez Jun 2018

Spanish Language Learning And Supporting Strategies In Mixed Classrooms At The Secondary Level, Jorge Vasquez

Theses and Dissertations

Students in the United States take language courses for various reasons. Many Spanish heritage language learners (HLLs) and the majority of second language learners (L2Ls) enroll in Spanish classes in the United States. Based on state demographics, sometimes immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries join HLLs and L2Ls in mixed-classrooms. Many times, these groups take classes together, even though their language abilities, motivations, and linguistic needs differ significantly. Such a learning setting presents challenges for them as well as for instructors. This study builds upon and reinforces findings from previous studies regarding teaching mixed-classes. Data were gathered from 41 students taking AP …

The Woman As . . . : The Feminine Quest In The Feminine Quest In Lágrimas En La Lluvia And El Peso Del Corazón By Rosa Montero, Zachary Nelson Glassett Jun 2018

The Woman As . . . : The Feminine Quest In The Feminine Quest In Lágrimas En La Lluvia And El Peso Del Corazón By Rosa Montero, Zachary Nelson Glassett

Theses and Dissertations

Rosa Montero's novels Lágrimas en la lluvia and Peso del corazón focus on Bruna Husky, an android private detective living in Madrid in 2109. Husky's career leads her into investigating various sinister plots, both of which she falls victim to. These quests lead her to make discoveries about herself that challenge her beliefs about herself. All the cases that Bruna investigates take her on journeys that mirror Campbell's structure of the monomythic quest. My analysis of the novels focuses on how Bruna follows the model of the Campbellian cycle while at the same time questioning the quest, keeping true to …

Affect, Neoliberalism And Forgiveness In Alonso Cueto's 'Redención' Trilogy, Anthony Joseph Pearce Jun 2018

Affect, Neoliberalism And Forgiveness In Alonso Cueto's 'Redención' Trilogy, Anthony Joseph Pearce

Theses and Dissertations

In the aftermath of the bloody twenty-year internal conflict in Peru, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación, or CVR) documented the massive human rights violations by Sendero Luminoso and the Peruvian state. The CVR contextualized these abuses by producing a broad historical narrative which has fomented the creation of a new discourse in Peruvian cultural production. This thesis is concerned with how the CVR and the post-conflict search for reconciliation have influenced contemporary Peruvian literature. This paper will focus on the ‘Redención' trilogy by novelist Alonso Cueto. The three novels explore notions of forgiveness and …

"Duas Tribos:" Contradictions Of Political And Social (Des)Esperança In The Discography Of Legião Urbana, Cai Elisabeth Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

Brazil's 1964-1985 military regime served as one of the principle catalysts for the leftist counterculture movement, Tropicália, which gave way to a new class of músicas engajadas. Later, during the period of redemocratization that followed the dictatorship, musicians extended the morphed the art into new forms, particularly through the use of rock-and-roll. The sociopolitical musical criticism that was formerly cloaked under the censorship stylistically transformed itself into an open, blunt, and much louder movement. Standing at the head of this new period of músicas engajadas was Renato Russo, frontman and lyricist of the Brock band Legião Urbana. At the …

Heideggerian Authenticity In La Celestina And Don Quijote De La Mancha, Stevenson George Smith Apr 2018

Heideggerian Authenticity In La Celestina And Don Quijote De La Mancha, Stevenson George Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the intersection of the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and Spanish literature. The study examines the Heideggerian authenticity and inauthenticity of two characters in the literature: Melibea in La Celestina by Fernando de Rojas and Grisóstomo in Don Quijote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. Heidegger’s concept of authenticity is the ability of the individual to live in the world according to her own desires, outside of the influence of others. Both die by suicide, but Melibea is an authentic character in Heideggerian terms and Grisóstomo is inauthentic. At the end of her life, Melibea has resolved …

The New World, Digested: Anthropophagy And Consumption In Abel Posse's El Largo Atardecer Del Caminante, Adam Points Wilson Apr 2018

The New World, Digested: Anthropophagy And Consumption In Abel Posse's El Largo Atardecer Del Caminante, Adam Points Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The present thesis uses as its primary source of inspiration Argentine author Abel Posse's El largo atardecer del caminante (1992), which boasts the historically-based, unconventional Spanish conquistador, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, as its main protagonist and narrator. I explore the juxtaposition of two opposing forms of metaphorical consumption in the novel. To highlight the first, I apply to the fictional Cabeza de Vaca the general concept of antropofagia cultural, or "cultural cannibalism," as described by Brazilian writer Oswald de Andrade in his "Manifesto Antropófago" (1928). I specifically examine the symbolic development of Posse's Cabeza de Vaca as the …

Memoria Y Trauma De La Mujer Durante La Posguerra Civil Española En La Obra La Voz Dormida De Dulce Chacón, Gina Aurora Villalobos

Theses and Dissertations

Exploring The Resting State Neural Activity Of Monolinguals And Late And Early Bilinguals, Carrie Elizabeth Gold Jan 2018

Exploring The Resting State Neural Activity Of Monolinguals And Late And Early Bilinguals, Carrie Elizabeth Gold

Theses and Dissertations

Individuals who speak more than one language have been found to enjoy a number of benefits not directly associated with the use of the languages themselves. One of these benefits is that bilingual individuals appear to develop symptoms of dementia 4-5 years later than comparable individuals who speak just one language. Studies on this topic, however, do not consistently account for factors including if the individual learned their second language as a child or later in life, or their language proficiency. In an attempt to more carefully examine these variables, this study looks at structural and resting-state functional MRI scans …

Madness In The Quijote: Don Quijote As Alonso Quijano's True Self, Paul J. Schmidt Dec 2017

Madness In The Quijote: Don Quijote As Alonso Quijano's True Self, Paul J. Schmidt

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the dichotomy of locura/cordura in Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quijote de la Mancha (1605/1615), specifically the nature of the madness of the titular character. Two different aspects of the Quijote are discussed: (1) the dual nature of the personality of Don Quijote/Alonso Quijano as being "sanely insane," that is, that although Don Quijote exhibits symptoms unmistakably indicative of madness, he maintains his sanity underneath this mad façade; the dedicatory sonnets that precede Part 1, the epitaphs that follow the end of Part 1, and the two poems that serve as an epilogue to Part 2 are examined …

Analyzing Young Readers' Empathetic Responses To A Mexican American Historical Narrative, Yvette Rivera Dec 2017

Analyzing Young Readers' Empathetic Responses To A Mexican American Historical Narrative, Yvette Rivera

Theses and Dissertations

Empathy and cultural understanding of groups that are marginalized due to religious, ethnic or sexual background is essential for peace in schools, neighborhoods, and society at large. Literacy classrooms can be a safe environment in which students can develop their own understandings and empathies. Although worthwhile, much of the research lacks details of student reactions to the people and cultures read about in historical narratives, as well as a focus on pedagogical practices that could give students a deep understanding of the culture. This study analyzed the empathetic responses of 13 sixth grade students to themes presented in a Mexican …

Atrición Del Español Como Lengua Materna: Diversidad Y Sofisticación Léxicas, Martha Alexander Walch

Theses and Dissertations

Theses and Dissertations

"It's Not Me, It's /U/: An Acoustic Analysis Of Target-Language Immersion's Effect On L1 English Speakers' Spanish Vowel Production" And "Tener: ¿Lo Tenemos Entendido?", Tanner Charles Linton

Theses and Dissertations

Within the field of second language acquisition of phonology, the role of immersion experiences on language learners' pronunciation has recently become a topic of greater interest. While students of a foreign language with study abroad experience (one to six months) have shown relatively little progress in pronunciation gains, language learners group with extended immersion experience—approximately 24 months abroad—have demonstrated more native-like pronunciation. This study compares the pronunciation of L2 Spanish /u/ among native English speakers enrolled in the same third-year Spanish course who belong to two different groups based on the context of their previous language learning: extended immersion in …

Inseguridad Frente A Lealtad Lingüística: El Caso Dominicano, Orlando Alba

Faculty Publications

Madrid Frente A Santo Domingo: La /D/ Intervocálica Y La /S/ Implosiva, Orlando Alba

Faculty Publications

Bodies Of Light: Affect And The Filmic Gaze In Horacio Quiroga's Cinema Stories, Morgan Keith Stewart Jun 2017

Bodies Of Light: Affect And The Filmic Gaze In Horacio Quiroga's Cinema Stories, Morgan Keith Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

Though Horacio Quiroga is better known for his jungle tales, he was also a prolific film critic. Writing in the early days of silent cinema, Quiroga channeled his love for the new art into a series of four short stories about film: "Miss Dorothy Phillips, mi esposa" (1919), "El espectro" (1921), "El puritano" (1926), and "El vampiro" (1927). These stories not only reveal Quiroga's passion for the cinema, but also showcase the power of film to affect the spectator. The theoretical basis of my study comes from the Deleuzian concept of affect, being defined as the invisible force or intensity …

Interpreting Art History By Brazillian Modernist Anuta Malfatti, Michelle Turner, Rex Nielson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project is centered around the artist Anita Malfatti and her teaching of art history. Malfatti was an instrumental figure in the development of Brazilian Modernism. Leaving an oeuvre composed primarily of portraits and landscapes, the majority of critics and scholars have been dedicated to recognizing interactions Malfatti had with artists in Germany and New York. She continued to paint and depict Brazilian life throughout her life but also was a teacher of art and art history.

Her lectures still exist in notebooks, though under-researched and unpublished. The main goal of this research was to access her archive, then transcribe …

Trash And Contemporary Brazil: Modernization And Consumption In Brazil’S Megacities, Asa Richards Laws, Dr. Rex Nielson May 2017

Trash And Contemporary Brazil: Modernization And Consumption In Brazil’S Megacities, Asa Richards Laws, Dr. Rex Nielson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Over the past 50 years the growing difference between trash collection capacity and consumption has produced new cultural developments concerning the collection, reuse, and criminalization of trash in Brazil. The thin legal framework that surrounds lixões [pronounced li-¢òõẽs] (open air garbage dumps) in Brazil has, in many ways, resulted in the rise of public trash and recycling collection in lixões that can be found in Brazilian megacities. According to my research, few statutes in either Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo exist to govern the treatment of trash collection by marginalized populations living near or on lixões. What laws that …
