Man exists upon a continuum of existence and nonexistence. Throughout the works of C.S. Lewis, one unearths the notion that God beckons man higher into a greater reality, one in which man is both more independent and more united with God; meanwhile, Satan attempts to drag man downward into increased nonexistence. Man is called into a higher existence, but God is not calling us to be Him. God is calling us to be more human, the humanity that He intended.

This study aimed to determine whether fatalistic beliefs were associated with elevated levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and to establish the role of religiosity in this relationship. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on a sample of 183 Jewish adults with diabetes visiting a large medical center in northern Israel. Self-administered questionnaires assessed level of religiosity, fatalistic beliefs, diabetes management behaviors, and demographic/personal characteristics; laboratory tests were used to measure HbA1c. Multivariate regression indicated that fatalism was significantly associated with HbA1c (β = 0.51, p = 0.01). In a world, where cartoonists and grocery shoppers are gunned down in Paris, and journalists are beheaded on Youtube, the annihilating self-communication of a suicide bomber serves as a ready-made opportunity for a radical claim at sovereignty, if only for a moment. To bomb is to communicate an absolute immanence. Such bombing is a demand for a response.

Both Benedict XVI and John Paul II were forming their faith when they witnessed the great atrocities committed by the communist Soviet Union, and both held strong aversions to liberation theology which shares several essential ideas with Marxism. In Pope Francis’ side of the world, liberation theology came to be viewed in a completely opposite light. There, it was popularized as a God-blessed revolution against oppressive dictatorships. Pope Francis has an opportunity to enrich the Church’s mission with the gains made by Latin American liberation theologians.

This thesis gives consideration to issues surrounding the question of access to salvation, and to sacramental event, for contemporary ‘Samaritans’ – those persons who, for whatever reason, find themselves outside the Church. To chart such access, attention must be afforded, not only to the historical pronouncements of the Church, but also, most importantly, to the voiced laments and insights of these Samaritans themselves, enduring their dissonance and respecting their critique, both theological and ecclesiastical. Through the lens of Rudolf Otto’s discussion of the numinous, visual languages, including darkness, scale and silence, are explored as methods for expression of the spiritual. Throughout the exploration of material and process, an emphasis is placed on exploring a relationship between the transcendental and the everyday, between the physical and spiritual world. ABSTRACT The dearth of reliable primary source material on the New Prophecy has led to a proliferation of interpretations of the character of the movement. However, a careful examination of the New Prophecy’s preserved sayings, the writings of Tertullian, and the movement’s earliest critics preserved by Eusebius and Epiphanius reveal a movement steeped in the Christian tradition that came into conflict with other Christians because of their willingness to pay ministers and their passive understanding of the charisma of prophecy.

Specifically, acting and leadership tools previously identified and compared by Dunklee (2000) were used to gain a better understanding of the interview process utilized to hire K-12 principals in school districts with more than 10,000 students in the state of Indiana. Flourishing in the Church prior to and following the Second Vatican Council were ecclesial movements such as Focolare, Communion and Liberation, and Schoenstatt. Founded by charismatic leaders, a particular characteristic of each is their unique expression of Marian devotion. Chiara Lubich, foundress of the Focolare Movement, recognized Mary as the Mother and Model of the movement, and encouraged members to become repetitions of Mary in the world. The writings of Lubich lend themselves to the discovery of a familial spirituality, applicable to members and non-members of the movement alike. The beauty of the Virgin-Mother gives spiritual life to her children. In that regard, this article will explore the writings of some of the Church Fathers, the Marian psalter attributed to St. Bonaventure, and the theology-of-the-body audiences of Pope St. John Paul II to show how Mary is mother of the spiritual life and the exemplar of the life of the elect.

Scholarly literature about Western Art is silent on the iconographic inclusion of the Virgin nursing the Christ Child in images of the Holy Family. This paper explores two interpretations of Mary nursing in Holy Family scenes and how the Instrumentum Laboris for the Synod on the Family (2015-16) elucidates God’s plan for the family as revealed in these depictions.

I argue that an analysis of Buddhist meditation theory and practice may be used to ground a model of the possibility of free agency that stands up against four powerful arguments for free will skepticism in contemporary analytic philosophy: Peter van Inwagen’s consequence argument, which asserts that if choices are lawfully necessary consequences of prior events, then they are unfree; Derk Pereboom’s two arguments for hard incompatibilism: the manipulation argument, which asserts that manipulated choices are unfree, determinism is functionally equivalent to manipulation, and thus determined choices are unfree; and the randomness argument, which asserts that we cannot claim authorship …

Transhumanism is a philosophical, political, and social movement that asserts that human well-being will be dramatically improved through the radical integration of new technologies into the human body and/or through the replacement of the organic human body with a synthetic 'body.' Atheists are often portrayed in the media and elsewhere as angry individuals. Although atheists disagree with the pillar of many religions, namely the existence of a God, it may not necessarily be the case that they are angry individuals. The prevalence and accuracy of angry-atheist perceptions were examined in 7 studies with 1,677 participants from multiple institutions and locations in the United States. Studies 1–3 revealed that people believe atheists are angrier than believers, people in general, and other minority groups, both explicitly and implicitly. Broadly, I propose to respond to the following question: What does the unique spousal relationship of Mary and Joseph have to teach families and individuals about the nature of marriage and conjugal love, especially in Christian marriage? While the circumstances of their particular relationship and calling might seem too extraordinary to appear relevant for recent thinking about marriage and family life, I will argue that it is precisely in view of the unique features of their spousal relationship that Mary and Joseph can be appreciated as exemplary for married life, even in modern times.
