The Theology Of Reparation To The Immaculate Heart Of Mary, Arthur Burton Calkins May 2016

The Theology Of Reparation To The Immaculate Heart Of Mary, Arthur Burton Calkins

Marian Studies

The Theology of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a topic barely considered in modern theology, but strongly brought to the fore in the apparitions at Fatima and the subsequent apparitions to Sister Lúcia, the last surviving seer of Fatima and other mystics. The analogy or “likeness in difference” between the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the consecration to their Hearts, the Heart of the God-man and the Heart of the most perfect creature, is primary. In “Miserentissimus Redemptor,” Pius XI taught that just as in his agony Jesus not only …

Emergence And Development Of The Two Hearts Alliance, Lawrence Scrivani May 2016

Emergence And Development Of The Two Hearts Alliance, Lawrence Scrivani

Marian Studies

During the 1980s and 1990s the term “Two Hearts Alliance” appeared suddenly in certain Catholic circles without obvious antecedents. It inspired a popular movement for a time, even though Mariologists were unfamiliar with it. Investigation reveals that it can be traced to a phrase used by John Paul II in 1985, “the admirable alliance of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.” Beginning at Fatima in 1986 and continuing to Rome in 1997, several symposia examined its roots and implications. It was said to have roots in the notion of Mary as the Associate (socia) of Christ, a notion reaching back …

The Heart Of Mary In Light Of A Biblical Anthropology: Mother, Mystic, And Prophet, Virginia M. Kimball May 2016

The Heart Of Mary In Light Of A Biblical Anthropology: Mother, Mystic, And Prophet, Virginia M. Kimball

Marian Studies

The biblical emphasis of Vatican II and later developments, such as the address of Pope Benedict XVI to the Marian Congress of 2012 about studying the Blessed Mother from many different perspectives, have led mariologists to a new appreciation for a determined biblical-anthropological approach. This approach has great significance for understanding the heart of the Woman who “held all these things in her heart.” Mary’s heart connects all of us to her--as woman, mother, mystic, and prophet—to her who holds the Lord in her heart, a heart completely united to the heart of her Son, Jesus the Christ.

Theological Foundations For Eucharistic Reparation To The Heart Of Jesus Through The Heart Of Mary In The Context Of Messages Given To St. Margaret Mary And At Fatima, Dwight P. Campbell May 2016

Theological Foundations For Eucharistic Reparation To The Heart Of Jesus Through The Heart Of Mary In The Context Of Messages Given To St. Margaret Mary And At Fatima, Dwight P. Campbell

Marian Studies

The private revelations associated with Fatima, Portugal, beginning with the messages of the Angel to the children in 1916, and then by Our Lady beginning in May of 1917, focus on making reparation for sins and for the conversion of sinners through prayer and penance. Notably, the messages specifically request reparation for sins which offend the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and link this reparation to the Holy Eucharist—and, by implication, to Christ’s Heart present therein. The Fatima revelations follow upon and complement those communicated by Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in the 1670s, in which Jesus …

‘By Mary’S Heart We Love The Heart Of Jesus’: The Teachings Of St. Louis M. De Montfort (+1716) On Jesus’ And Mary’S Heart, Deyanira Flores May 2016

‘By Mary’S Heart We Love The Heart Of Jesus’: The Teachings Of St. Louis M. De Montfort (+1716) On Jesus’ And Mary’S Heart, Deyanira Flores

Marian Studies

The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima (1917-2017) offers us a good opportunity to meditate on and renew our devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This paper dwells on the teachings of St. Louis M. de Montfort (+1716), which are so enlightening and profound. His teaching on Mary's Heart clearly contributed to the theology and devotion of Mary's Heart.

The Patristic Pre-History Of Devotion To The Immaculate Heart Of Mary, James K. Hanna May 2016

The Patristic Pre-History Of Devotion To The Immaculate Heart Of Mary, James K. Hanna

Marian Studies

Devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Heart emerged in the Middle Ages and flourished after the apparitions at Lourdes, Rue du Bac, and Fatima. But its roots run deep in tradition and are evident in the writings of the Fathers and the texts of the ancient liturgies. This paper begins by discussing early-Christian exegesis of Luke 2:35 and other key biblical texts. It proceeds to examine the various ways in which the Fathers spoke of Mary’s heart, and considers these in light of recent research on the earliest devotion to the Blessed Virgin. It concludes by evaluating Immaculate Heart devotion according to …

To Know Salvation: Marian Consecration As Antidote To New Gnosticisms, Maura Hearden Fehlner May 2016

To Know Salvation: Marian Consecration As Antidote To New Gnosticisms, Maura Hearden Fehlner

Marian Studies

In this essay, the author initiates a discussion about key ways in which the theology behind and practice of Marian consecration as developed by St. Louis de Montfort both refutes the errors of and fulfills the longing indicated by the emergence of strong gnostic currents in contemporary thought. To accommodate the parameters of this project, discussion is limited to three categories of “new Gnosticisms”—political, New Age, and technological—and key theological concepts.

Theological Foundations For Devotion To The Hearts Of Jesus And Mary According To St. John Eudes (1601-1680), Robert Fastiggi May 2016

Theological Foundations For Devotion To The Hearts Of Jesus And Mary According To St. John Eudes (1601-1680), Robert Fastiggi

Marian Studies

St. John Eudes united devotion to Mary with devotion to her Son, Jesus Christ. For Eudes, the hearts of Jesus and Mary are inseparable. He recognized that the union of their two hearts is the most intimate union that ever existed. The heart of Jesus dwells in his Mother’s heart, forming a perfect union of the two hearts as one mystical heart. Eudes promoted the Feast of the Admirable Heart of Mary and the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in order to express the mystical union of the two hearts.

Mary, Mother And Model For Family Life In The Thought Of Chiara Lubich And The Experience Of The Focolare Movement, Edward L. Looney May 2015

Mary, Mother And Model For Family Life In The Thought Of Chiara Lubich And The Experience Of The Focolare Movement, Edward L. Looney

Marian Studies

Flourishing in the Church prior to and following the Second Vatican Council were ecclesial movements such as Focolare, Communion and Liberation, and Schoenstatt. Founded by charismatic leaders, a particular characteristic of each is their unique expression of Marian devotion. Chiara Lubich, foundress of the Focolare Movement, recognized Mary as the Mother and Model of the movement, and encouraged members to become repetitions of Mary in the world. The writings of Lubich lend themselves to the discovery of a familial spirituality, applicable to members and non-members of the movement alike. Elements of the derived familial spirituality include: imitation of the Holy …

Mary, Spouse Of Joseph, Model For Married Life, Joseph Arias May 2015

Mary, Spouse Of Joseph, Model For Married Life, Joseph Arias

Marian Studies

Broadly, I propose to respond to the following question: What does the unique spousal relationship of Mary and Joseph have to teach families and individuals about the nature of marriage and conjugal love, especially in Christian marriage? While the circumstances of their particular relationship and calling might seem too extraordinary to appear relevant for recent thinking about marriage and family life, I will argue that it is precisely in view of the unique features of their spousal relationship that Mary and Joseph can be appreciated as exemplary for married life, even in modern times.

Mary And Catechesis: Transmission Of The Faith And Christian Initiation In/By The Family, M. Jean Frisk May 2015

Mary And Catechesis: Transmission Of The Faith And Christian Initiation In/By The Family, M. Jean Frisk

Marian Studies

This presentation is built on my own catechizing experience and on the extensive research behind my STL thesis that shows the place of Mary in catechetical materials from the mid-1950s to the turn of the millennium. It is intended to provide scholars of Mary with an overview of the catechetical side of current Marian trends in the United States and, ultimately, to the Marian content in the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults (July 2006, fourth printing, September 2000), and to the current efforts to train catechetical leaders nationally and on the local levels of diocese and parish.

Mary And The Domestic Church, M. Danielle Peters May 2015

Mary And The Domestic Church, M. Danielle Peters

Marian Studies

Lumen Gentium (LG) 11 acknowledges: “The family is, so to speak, the domestic Church.” The Instrumentum Laboris (IL) of the Synod of Bishops, dealing with “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization,” refers five times to the family as domestic Church. The concluding prayer of the IL asks the Holy Family of Nazareth to “grant that our families, too, may be places of communion and prayer, authentic schools of the Gospel and small domestic Churches.” This paper seeks:

  • To explore the notion of the family as domestic church or Church in miniature;
  • To make a contribution …

The Mother Of Fair Love: The Beauty Of The Ever-Virgin For The Vocations Of Christian Life, Kevin Clarke May 2015

The Mother Of Fair Love: The Beauty Of The Ever-Virgin For The Vocations Of Christian Life, Kevin Clarke

Marian Studies

The beauty of the Virgin-Mother gives spiritual life to her children. In that regard, this article will explore the writings of some of the Church Fathers, the Marian psalter attributed to St. Bonaventure, and the theology-of-the-body audiences of Pope St. John Paul II to show how Mary is mother of the spiritual life and the exemplar of the life of the elect.

"I am the mother of fair love, and fear, and knowledge, and holy hope: I therefore, being eternal, am given to all my children which are named of him." (Sirach 24:18)

Maria 'Lactans' In Depictions Of The Holy Family, Cecelia Dorger May 2015

Maria 'Lactans' In Depictions Of The Holy Family, Cecelia Dorger

Marian Studies

Scholarly literature about Western Art is silent on the iconographic inclusion of the Virgin nursing the Christ Child in images of the Holy Family. This paper explores two interpretations of Mary nursing in Holy Family scenes and how the Instrumentum Laboris for the Synod on the Family (2015-16) elucidates God’s plan for the family as revealed in these depictions.

'Mater Ecclesiae': History, Theology, And Consequences, Johann G. Roten May 2015

'Mater Ecclesiae': History, Theology, And Consequences, Johann G. Roten

Marian Studies

Ecclesiology involves an ongoing study of the Church that will be fruitful for understanding its present only if one explores the Church’s past in search of the future. The ecclesiology of the mid-twentieth century rediscovered the close relationship between Mary and the Church, culminating in the title and the reality of Mater Ecclesiae (Mary, Mother of the Church).

The Marian Spirituality Of 'Lumen Gentium' And The Renewal Of Marian Devotion In The Church Today, Mary Mccaughey May 2014

The Marian Spirituality Of 'Lumen Gentium' And The Renewal Of Marian Devotion In The Church Today, Mary Mccaughey

Marian Studies

While Marian devotion is alive today, its contemporary expression differs from the form it took before the Second Vatican Council and has developed since. My paper will explore the present state of Marian devotion—forty years after the publication of Marialis Cultus by Pope Paul VI, and fifty years after the Second Vatican Council—and consider how the form of devotion that exists today, understood with reference to the ecclesiology of Lumen Gentium, might better be interpreted as a Marian spirituality. While some might disagree that there is such a concept as a Marian Spirituality at all, my paper will demonstrate that …

Anthropological Aspects Of Marian Devotion For The Formation Of The 'Feminine Genius', Danielle Peters May 2014

Anthropological Aspects Of Marian Devotion For The Formation Of The 'Feminine Genius', Danielle Peters

Marian Studies

It is commonly accepted that devotio, as an act of virtue of religion and distinguished from devotional practices, implies a stable interior disposition and readiness to serve God joyfully and generously. Accordingly, authentic Marian devotion equips heart, mind and will to be receptive for a deeper understanding and fulfillment of God’s ways in imitation and through the intercession of Our Lady. Marialis Cultus, 34, denotes that “Devotion to the Blessed Virgin must also pay close attention to certain findings of the human sciences.”

Forty years after Marialis Cultus (MC) and twenty-five years after St. John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter Mulieris …

Feminist And New Feminist Perspectives On Mary: Renewal Or Retrieval?, Gloria Falcão Dodd May 2014

Feminist And New Feminist Perspectives On Mary: Renewal Or Retrieval?, Gloria Falcão Dodd

Marian Studies

Combining the idea of a priest’s spiritual marriage to the Church and Pope Paul VI’s title for Mary as Mother of the Church, Pope Francis joked with a group of seminarians: “If you don’t go to Our Lady as Mother, you certainly will have her as a mother-in-law! And this isn’t good.” In the midst of the many changes after Vatican Council II, Paul VI had observed the need to prevent misunderstandings, such as viewing Our Lady as a mother-in-law rather than a mother, or diminishing Marian devotion. Therefore, Paul VI wrote his 1974 encyclical, Marialis Cultus, describing three aspects …

The Contributions Of Leo Cardinal Scheffczyk To Mariology After Vatican Ii, Emery De Gaál May 2014

The Contributions Of Leo Cardinal Scheffczyk To Mariology After Vatican Ii, Emery De Gaál

Marian Studies

The shortest way to introduce Leo Scheffczyk (1920–2005) to an American theological audience is probably to state that he is “the European Avery Dulles.” Such a generalization is incorrect and yet contains a kernel of truth. At the same consistory in 2001, both master theologians were created cardinals by St. John Paul II. It is also most indicative of their contributions to theology that this date coincided with the 200th birthday of Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801–90), who informed their thinking in central ways. Incidentally, this was also Scheffczyk’s eighty-first birthday. In addition, both were prolific writers. Scheffczyk’s motto …
