Religion, Science, And Evolution: Paul Tillich's Fourth Way, Richard Grigg
Religion, Science, And Evolution: Paul Tillich's Fourth Way, Richard Grigg
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
In his book God After Darwin John Haught provides a useful categorization of theological approaches to evolution: some theologians actively oppose Darwinian evolution, another group maintains that science and religion have nothing to say to one another, and a third seeks to engage evolution. Haught wishes to pursue the third way. But many theological attempts to talk about divine action in the world, including divine involvement in the process of evolution, run afoul of the scientific principle of the conservation of matter-energy. Haught's reliance on the now-familiar notion that information can have causal efficacy does not in fact escape this …

Many churches in Africa lack recorded history for various reasons, such as scarcity of funds and/or scholars in the field of church history (cf. Kalu, 1993:166ff). This situation is more prevalent among the Pentecostal movements which, initially and for genuine reasons, were anti-intellectualist and emphasized ministry alone (Clark & Lederle et al, 1983:41; McNamee, 1974:27; and Hollenweger). Another possible explanation results from the fact that these churches are relatively young compared to their counterpart mainline churches. This lack of recorded history poses a hindrance to any efforts in evaluating the growth of such churches.
There is an immediate need to …

Bishop Bo Harald Giertz-Pietism And The Ordo Salutis-The Office Of The Holy Ministry, The Word, And Soul Care, Eric Andrae
Bishop Bo Harald Giertz-Pietism And The Ordo Salutis-The Office Of The Holy Ministry, The Word, And Soul Care, Eric Andrae
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Though acknowledged as one of the most influential European churchman of the past century, and widely lauded in American Lutheran circles as the author of the acclaimed The Hammer of God, much remains to be learned in the U.S. of Bishop Emeritus Dr. Bo Harald Giertz (Gothenburg [Goteborg] diocese, Church of Sweden, served 1949-1970) and of his theology, especially concerning the specific doctrine which served as the foundation of the novel, the Order of Grace. Furthermore, interest in Giertz in America is increasing rapidly: several translation projects are underway, a film based on the first chapter of The Hammer of …

Qualitative Church Growth: An Overview And Evaluation Of Selected Writings Of Dallas Willard, Larry S. Mcdonald
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
Even though leaders have acknowledged the need for qualitative growth, few address it. This writer believes it is time for the Church Growth Movement to access the literature available that can assist in developing a healthy qualitative growth.
8 Passions Needed For Church Planting And Church Renewal Impressions From A Church Planting Tour In Australia, Edgar Machel
8 Passions Needed For Church Planting And Church Renewal Impressions From A Church Planting Tour In Australia, Edgar Machel
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
In April 2002 I had the opportunity to be part of a church planting tour in Australia. How are young churches in Australia able to reach secular and a-religious people? How are they different from traditional churches? How much is transferable and how much is culture bound? Those questions accompanied us while we were planning our excursion. The churches we attended and/or studied were Independent, Charismatic, Baptist and Seventh-day Adventist.
Ancient Egyptian Religion On The Silver Screen: Modern Anxieties About Race, Ethnicity, And Religion, Caroline T. Schroeder
Ancient Egyptian Religion On The Silver Screen: Modern Anxieties About Race, Ethnicity, And Religion, Caroline T. Schroeder
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
This essay examines the depiction of religion, race, and ethnicity in four films: The Mummy, Stargate, The Ten Commandments, and Prince of Egypt. Each film - explicitly or implicitly, deliberately or not - uses ancient Egyptian religion as a foil to dramatize American concerns about race and ethnicity. The foil is the mysterious, and often false, religiosity of an often Orientalized religious and ethnic "other."

What Is Wrong With The Homogeneous Unit Principle?: The Hup In The 21st Century Church, Skip Bell
What Is Wrong With The Homogeneous Unit Principle?: The Hup In The 21st Century Church, Skip Bell
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
If you find the homogeneous unit principle to be controversial, credit Donald McGavran, who launched the church growth movement with his important work, Understanding Church Growth, first published in 1970. McGavran describes this principle: “Men like to become Christians without crossing racial, linguistic, or class barriers.” What exactly did McGavran and other key church growth researchers mean by this principle?
Big Picture Curricula For Multiethnic Ministry, Tom A. Steffen
Big Picture Curricula For Multiethnic Ministry, Tom A. Steffen
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
This article will propose a storied, big-picture approach to multiethnic ministry. It will advocate curriculum that builds a cathedral rather than isolated rooms. Before considering story-based, big-picture curricula I will first look at how the multiethnic church, and other types of churches, relates to the dominate theological themes of unity and diversity.
When The Church Was A Family: Revisioning Christian Community In Light Of Ancient Social Values, Joe Hellerman
When The Church Was A Family: Revisioning Christian Community In Light Of Ancient Social Values, Joe Hellerman
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
Some might attribute the relational crises characterizing our churches solely to individual sin and selfishness. Sin and selfishness, however, have been around since Adam. Why the radical increase in relational breakdown in our society and in our churches today? Something bigger is in the works, and it has to do with the unique orientation of modern Western culture, especially contemporary American society. Ours is a culture which insists to its own destruction that the dreams, goals, and personal fulfillment of the individual deserve a higher priority than the well-being of any group (natural family or church body) or relationship (friendship …

The ‘Earth-Dwellers’ And The ‘Heaven-Dwellers’ In Revelation: An Overlooked Interpretive Key, A. Boyd Luter
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
Research and publication on the Book of Revelation has escalated to a frenetic pace. In such a climate, in which, seemingly, every exegetical and theological nuance has been treated from virtually every conceivable angle, it would seem unlikely that any material of significance would be overlooked. However, as will be seen, careful study of two overlooked groups in the Apocalypse, to whom we will refer, shorthand, as the "earth dwellers" and the "heaven dwellers," provides considerable insight in regard to both the exegesis and biblical theology of this challenging book. Further, building from the exegetical/biblical theology conclusions, it is possible …

Can Joy And Reverence Coexist? A Look At Worship And Culture, Lilianne Douhkan

"What is the right form of worship? Is there only one correct form or style of worship? Have worship forms changed over time? Who is to decide which form or format is appropriate for worship? Almost everyone involved in the organization of worship has been confronted with such questions.
"Within the ensuing discussions there is an abundance of good intent, but also a plethora of personal opinions, and very often little understanding of what worship really is. I would like to suggest that when we inquire about forms and formats of worship, we are asking the wrong questions. Rather than …
