A Phenomenology Of Authentic Leadership, Joshua J. Tilley

This was done through a series of steps. This began with a literary and a biblical review which were conducted to establish the current scholarship related to authentic leadership. Finally, a new phenomenological study was conducted in October of 2018 to expand upon these findings and the essence is described. Through the phenomenology and subsequent …

Diaspora, Migration, And Refugees In Europe: Developing Leadership Within Multicultural Teams, Matthew S. Paschall Jan 2019

Diaspora, Migration, And Refugees In Europe: Developing Leadership Within Multicultural Teams, Matthew S. Paschall

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study addressed the challenge of developing leaders in the midst of the recent refugee crisis in Europe, historic waves of immigration, and ongoing global migration of diaspora peoples. Migration has led to unprecedented diversity in leadership as leaders from the Global South are relocating North and West. Each person carries preconceived cultural notions of how leaders should function and interact. Church and mission leaders must be equipped to navigate this complex cultural environment in order for multicultural teams to work effectively. The researcher based the theology of multicultural leadership in the Trinity where Father, Son, and Spirit expressed …

The Latitudinarian Influence On Early English Liberalism, Amanda Oh Jan 2019

The Latitudinarian Influence On Early English Liberalism, Amanda Oh

The Larrie and Bobbi Weil Undergraduate Research Award

This paper takes the unexpected position that early liberal thought developed in transformative events within the Anglican Church during the second half of the seventeenth century. The historical evolution of religion laid the foundation of English political and intellectual philosophy, as supported by works written by the branch of Anglican churchmen known as the Latitudinarians. I will argue that these ministers were foremost in advancing the argument for religious toleration because their religious writings held political consequence. Toleration was the principle value of liberalism in the late seventeenth century because the problem of Dissenters was so pertinent to English religious …

Participants were asked to identity the nature and mission of the Church and to imagine their congregation in five years. Congregational pastors, elders, and board members provided data which was synthesized into common ecclesiological themes and possibilities for adaptive change. An Audience Review …

Why We Listen To Sermons (Calvin Shorts), Scott E. Hoezee Jan 2019

Why We Listen To Sermons (Calvin Shorts), Scott E. Hoezee

Calvin Press

Why do we listen to sermons? Where did sermons come from? How has preaching managed to survive and thrive across so many years and in so many cultures? Most Christians listen to a sermon every week. But what is a sermon? How does it relate to the Bible, and how does the Holy Spirit work through the 354 million new sermons that are preached every year? This book makes the claim that the Spirit of God likes to work through the Word preached. As it explores that claim, it looks at the history of preaching and current-day practices. It provides …

Awana Together: Empowering Parents As Spiritual Mentors For Their Children, Sara-Jane Heacox Sosa Jan 2019

Awana Together: Empowering Parents As Spiritual Mentors For Their Children, Sara-Jane Heacox Sosa

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The post-Christian culture in the United States presents a significant challenge to the spiritual growth of adults and children. At Plymouth Covenant Church, ministry leaders recognized that young parents often lacked a biblical foundation. Many did not feel competent to lead their children spiritually. These parents needed a vibrant personal faith as well as good role models and encouragement. As a result, ministry leaders designed a more effective way to empower parents as spiritual mentors for their children. They created a new ministry that would provide personal faith development for parents, a supportive faith community, family-focused programming, and solid biblical …

A Phenomenology Of Flesh: Heidegger, The Body, And The Work Of Art, Trisha Famisaran Jan 2019

A Phenomenology Of Flesh: Heidegger, The Body, And The Work Of Art, Trisha Famisaran

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation begins by asking, what is the body, and how does one develop an understanding of the body? In this study, I aim to rework the notions of discursive practices and material phenomena, seeking to examine the relationship between the two in light of the work of art, so conceived within the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, in an attempt to deal with the question: “what is the body?” This dissertation avoids reifying certain normative descriptions of the body or constraining the matter of the body as strictly the effect of discursive power. I attempt a phenomenological observation about subjectivity …

Good Places For All (Calvin Shorts), Mark D. Bjelland Jan 2019

Good Places For All (Calvin Shorts), Mark D. Bjelland

Calvin Press

This short book invites readers into a deeper understanding of cities and suburbs and the challenges they face. Because places play such an important role in human well-being, loving our neighbors includes caring for and cultivating good places for all. Despite their great prosperity, North American communities are beset with challenges: fiscal crises, concentrated poverty, fragmentation and division, failing schools, unaffordable housing, and lack of community feeling. Good Places combines a biblical framework with an exploration of how cities, neighborhoods, housing markets, and transportation systems work. Readers will find themselves challenged to extend Christian hospitality beyond the walls of their …

John Calvin’S Two-Fold Notion Of Faith And The Possibility Of Faith Formation: The Emerging Genevan Church’S Understanding Of Faith And Its Relation To Pastoral Care, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa Jan 2019

John Calvin’S Two-Fold Notion Of Faith And The Possibility Of Faith Formation: The Emerging Genevan Church’S Understanding Of Faith And Its Relation To Pastoral Care, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa

CTS Student Publications and Creative Works

The purpose of this study is to explore John Calvin’s two-fold notion of faith in the 1559 edition of the Institutes and its central implications for pastoral theology in the emerging Reformed tradition, in order to reclaim a broader and contextualized understanding of pastoral care and its relation with faith formation. To that end, this article will focus on the ways the emerging mid- sixteenth century Reformed church in Geneva applied the Calvinian notion of faith to pastoral theology. Some applications of such an understanding for the church today are also explored, especially for the modern American-Dutch Reformed church.

Should We Read Bavinck's The Philosophy Of Revelation As An Apologetic-Of-Despair Work?, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa Jan 2019

Should We Read Bavinck's The Philosophy Of Revelation As An Apologetic-Of-Despair Work?, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa

CTS Student Publications and Creative Works

In dealing with arguments against the Christian faith in his book The Philosophy of Religion, Herman Bavinck uses a series of argumentative strategies. One of these strategies is the apologetic of despair. This study tries to figure out whether this strategy tends to be observed in most essays of the book or its use is only circumstantial.

Hell As ‘Heterotopia’: Edification And Interpretation From Enoch To The Apocalypses Of Peter And Paul, Meghan Henning Jan 2019

Hell As ‘Heterotopia’: Edification And Interpretation From Enoch To The Apocalypses Of Peter And Paul, Meghan Henning

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

Otherworldly journeys are a challenging object of study for the contemporary historian because they do not seem to resonate with the post-enlightenment worldview that bolsters scientific academic inquiry. And yet, even if we do not imagine heaven and hell in the same way that ancient thinkers did, the impulse to create “otherworlds” is still very much alive. With every new technology humans open the possibility of new spaces with complex relationships to the spaces that already exist. Here, before we think about the reception of 1 Enoch in the apocalypses, I would like to take a moment to propose a …
