Service-Learning Research For Development: An Option For The Poor In Practice Through Social Analysis And Community Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Kate L. Nolt Nov 2019

Service-Learning Research For Development: An Option For The Poor In Practice Through Social Analysis And Community Engagement, Thomas M. Kelly, Kate L. Nolt

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

A group of faculty, staff and students from Creighton University conducted a research project using a strengths-based approach to create a community health needs assessment (CNHA) in the fall of 2017. The instruments, including a survey to determine health status, a focus group questionnaire, an environmental scan and an individual interview instrument, were developed to help shift the paradigm from which many international medical missions are conducted with Creighton’s community partner in the Dominican Republic, the Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI). In the process of creating, developing, implementing, assessing and reformulating this strength-based CHNA, researchers encountered both …

The Language Of Repentance In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds Nov 2019

The Language Of Repentance In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Efforts to understand the doctrine of repentance in the Book of Mormon have long been hampered by linguistic considerations—and especially the traditional translation provided in the King James Version of the Bible. Twentieth century studies provide a needed correction to this situation and open a wealth of potential new understandings of Book of Mormon discourse on repentance. Further, the discovery that the Book of Mormon uses the common biblical figure of speech of hendiadys repeatedly to expand and enrich the concept of repentance beyond biblical usage helps readers appreciate the ways in which repentance can be seen as the most …

Faith And Faithfulness In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds Nov 2019

Faith And Faithfulness In The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The concept of covenantal faithfulness toward Yahweh that Old Testament scholars have recognized and defined over the last century turns out to be a far better account of the Book of Mormon understanding of faith in the Lord, in Jesus Christ, than are any of the competing concepts of faith that have grown out of the Christian tradition over the last two millennia. For the Nephite prophets, faith was an active concept, better understood as faithfulness—as diligent obedience to the commandments the Lord has given to those who have accepted the gospel covenant through repentance and baptism. The divine …

Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds Nov 2019

Covenant Language In Biblical Religions And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

In this essay I have tried to provide a broad survey of the concept of covenant for Latter-day Saint students of the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I began with a sketch of the history of covenant theology in the Christian tradition showing how the early New Testament idea of a baptismal covenant was soon replaced by the Christian institution of sacraments. Although the covenant idea played little role in the historical developments of Christian theology, it did resurge in the Reformation, but without widespread theological impact.

In contrast, over the last century, the role of the covenant idea …

Do Queer Theologies Need An «Option For The Poor»?: Blurring Lines Between Sexual Decency
And Economic Practice, Graham Gerald Mcgeoch

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article revisits Latin American Liberation Theology’s «option for the poor» in light of Marcella Althaus-Reid’s theological contribution. Queer Theory and Queer Theologies have helped to critique the idealised «poor» and «option for the poor» in much of Latin American Liberation Theology. This article takes on board those critiques, but in turn it asks if Queer Theory and Queer Theologies more widely ought to include and «option for the poor» in their own methodologies.

«Patear El Tablero»: Aportes Y Desafíos De Lo Queer Al Quehacer Teológico-Pastoral, Federico Manuel Nantes

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article focuses on the contributions and challenges that queer theology offers to the theological world. However, it also addresses particular theological-pastoral reflection beyond the specificity of queer theologies. The article presents three aspects of queer theologies that I recognize as essential to all theological reflection. The second section develops in what sense queer theologies constitute a contribution to the «liberation of theology.» The last section points out pastoral challenges by focusing on rethinking the concept of «inclusion» as a challenge of what means to «queer» theology.

El Discurso Queer Sobre Dios: Una Nueva Noción De Identidad
Y Su Posibilidad De Ser-Y-Estar-En-El-Mundo, Laura Abate

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article seeks to denounce the heteronormative model’s inconsistencies and inequalities from the perspective of queer theologies. Using the tools proposed by queer theory, these theologies seek to promote liberation so that people of sexual and gender diversity who profess a faith can be-and-stay-in-the-world in a visible and respected way. Queer theologies challenge normative structures and discourses that seek to close identities in their multiple aspects within the religious field. Thus, they help us deconstruct heteropatriarchal normative theology until that deconstruction also allows us to speak of a queer God.

An Indecent Pedagogy: Marcella Althaus-Reid Leading Theology Out Of The Closet Through Indecent Theology, Elizabeth Ingenthron Nov 2019

An Indecent Pedagogy: Marcella Althaus-Reid Leading Theology Out Of The Closet Through Indecent Theology, Elizabeth Ingenthron

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

Through Indecent Theology, Marcella Althaus-Reid contributed to liberation through education or pedagogy as a «leading out.» Because of the way that Althaus-Reid leads us out of the closet of oppressive social and theological frameworks, this article argues that her work is simultaneously theological and pedagogical. Paulo Freire’s notions on pedagogy provide an apt theoretical framework for the analysis. Reading Althaus-Reid’s Indecent Theology through Freire’s work provides a re-contextualized understanding of his pedagogical theory. Thus, allowing the liberatory theological and pedagogical praxis of Indecent Theology to emerge. It concludes that —through a deeper appreciation of Althaus-Reid’s Indecent Theology’s liberatory nature— her …

With great satisfaction we present the second issue of Queer Connection: Latin American and Caribbean Magazine of Queer Theologies. On the tenth anniversary of her death, this number brings together various voices that rescue her legacy and constitute a tribute to her memory.

Rational Principles In Ibn-Sinа’S Theological Education And Their Characteristic Features, Ramzjоn Isakdjanov Nov 2019

Rational Principles In Ibn-Sinа’S Theological Education And Their Characteristic Features, Ramzjоn Isakdjanov

The Light of Islam

This article is devoted to covering the philosophic views of the great philosopher Abu Ali Ibn Sina. One of the most complex issues in the history of philosophy is the metaphysics, that is, the idea of existence outside the nature and their logical analysis. It was Ibn Sina who developed this complex teaching and used the method of logic. Many western scientists have unanimously learned the heritage of Ibn Sino. His methodology has been assessed differently. The article outlines these approaches. The study of Ibn Sina’s logical approach to theological issues is one of the most important studies on modern …

Naturally-Scientific And Philosophical Views Abu Ali Ibn Sino, Gularam Masharipova Nov 2019

Naturally-Scientific And Philosophical Views Abu Ali Ibn Sino, Gularam Masharipova

The Light of Islam

The article analyzes the natural-science and philosophical views of Abu Ali Ibn Sino, and also studies the social relations of that period. The scientific heritage of Ibn Sina, representing a rich philosophical system (Kitab ash-shifa, Kitab an-najot, Donishnom) was investigated from the point of view of philosophical knowledge: physics, mathematics, logic and metaphysics. The scientific heritage of Abu Ali Ibn Sina is conventionally divided into 4 groups, that is, natural, philosophical views, literature and medicine. Much attention is paid to philosophy and medicine. In the West, the medical heritage of Avicenna is known from the work of the Canon of …

Weaponization Of The Border, Neomi De Anda Nov 2019

Weaponization Of The Border, Neomi De Anda

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In response to deadly shootings having taken place near the author's hometown, this paper addresses the impact of weaponization within the culture of the United States as it shows itself in an epidemic of gun violence. Attentive to Christian thinking on violence, this paper pushes for renewed conversation on weaponization, and it challenges scholars to work toward concrete actions to deconstruct the tools of weaponization.

Since this paper was first presented, the author has provided multiple appendices that chart the instances of gun violence between 2019 and 2024 within schools and for mass shootings.

The Role Of Biblical Literacy In Discipling Believers In The Local Church, Joseph G. Austin Nov 2019

The Role Of Biblical Literacy In Discipling Believers In The Local Church, Joseph G. Austin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The degradation of biblical literacy has increased in recent years to the point that many church attendees have very little actual knowledge or understanding of Biblical truths. This lack of knowledge is a direct correlation to the lack of moral foundations for many of today’s believers, particularly with younger generations. The goal of this paper is to provide a balanced, substantive, and interactive plan for churches, large and small, to integrate into their discipleship programs or use to assist the local church in establishing a discipleship program. The process will include surveys gauging the level of biblical literacy among self-identified …

If Not Stewards Of Creation, What Are We?, David Warners, Matthew Kuperus Heun Oct 2019

If Not Stewards Of Creation, What Are We?, David Warners, Matthew Kuperus Heun

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

What if God didn’t place humans on earth to be stewards of creation? If not stewards, then what is our relationship to the nonhuman creation? These are the central questions addressed by Beyond Stewardship: New Approaches to Creation Care (The Calvin Press, 2019). Using voices and insights of 14 authors from diverse disciplines, this book is filled with fresh ideas and encouragement to help Christians better understand both their place in the world and the many relationships that embed them within God’s good but groaning creation.

A New Catechism For The Digital Age, Bruce D. Baker Oct 2019

A New Catechism For The Digital Age, Bruce D. Baker

SPU Works

Preaching and teaching in our digital age demands theological reflection to answer challenging questions raised by exponential technologies. Can an AI become conscious? Is AI intelligent, really? Can a robot sin? Can we program morality? Can we upload our minds? Is transhumanism a technical possibility? Do we need to rethink eschatology? In this paper I hope to contribute to a constructive dialog. I suggest this catechism format as a means to support the need of the Church to teach sound theological doctrine with respect to these challenging questions. By no means do I wish to imply that this catechism is …

Looking Back At The Evolution Of James Cone’S Theological Anthropology: A Brief Commentary, Sekhmet Maat Oct 2019

Looking Back At The Evolution Of James Cone’S Theological Anthropology: A Brief Commentary, Sekhmet Maat

History, Political Science, Geography, and Africana Studies Faculty Research

Reverend Dr. James Hal Cone has unquestionably been a key architect in defining Black liberation theology. Trained in the Western theological tradition at Garrett Theological Seminary, Cone became an expert on the theology of Twentieth-century Swiss-German theologian Karl Barth. Cone’s study of Barth led to his 1965 doctoral dissertation, “The Doctrine of Man in the Theology of Karl Barth,” where he critically examined Barth’s Epistle to the Romans and Church Dogmatics. His contemporaries and more recent African American theologians and religious scholars have questioned the extent to which Karl Barth’s ideas shaped Cone’s Black theology. The purpose of this brief …

Data And Identity: Notes Toward A Theology Of The Digitally Enhanced Self, Michael Paulus Oct 2019

Data And Identity: Notes Toward A Theology Of The Digitally Enhanced Self, Michael Paulus

SPU Works

In the HBO-BBC miniseries "Years and Years," a teenager named Bethany (!) comes out as transhuman and tells her parents she wants to “live forever as information ... [to] be data!” As information about us increasingly takes the form of digital data, we are all of us becoming data. Indeed, so much of our attention and agency is engaged with digital information in digital environments that the philosopher Luciano Floridi describes us as “inforgs” living “onlife” in an “infosphere.” Through nearly constant and ubiquitous patterns of digital interactions with human and artificial agents, we are creating digitally extended and enhanced …

The Gendering Of Voice In Medieval Hindu Literature, Nancy M. Martin Oct 2019

The Gendering Of Voice In Medieval Hindu Literature, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"To fully grasp the implications of the gendering of voice in this literature, we must first understand the religious context that generates these voices and the life stories of the saintly figures in whose names these voices continue to be spoken. Accordingly, we will trace the origins and nature of devotional Hinduism. Theologically gender inclusive and embracing a feminine spiritual identity, the stories and songs of its saints will nevertheless reveal an ongoing bias against women and upholding of patriarchal norms that is continually challenged, particularly by women saints whose life stories follow very different trajectories than their male counterparts, …
