The Anabaptists And Their Rejection Of Infant Baptism, James T. Heinemeier Jun 1958

The Anabaptists And Their Rejection Of Infant Baptism, James T. Heinemeier

Bachelor of Divinity

Rather than being an exhaustive study of perhaps one of the reasons or the Anabaptists' rejection of infant baptism, this thesis presents a somewhat broader look at the background of the movement, and the social, political, and theologica1 attitudes of the Anabaptists, followed by a more thorough investigation of five of the particularly fundamental objections the Anabaptists raised against infant baptisrn. The writer shall attempt to be as objective as possible in presenting the material contained in the body of the thesis. His subjective evaluation and conclusions are contained in the last chapter.

Luther's Concept Of Conscience, Raynold Eckhoff Jun 1957

Luther's Concept Of Conscience, Raynold Eckhoff

Bachelor of Divinity

The object of this thesis is not to determine what others have said, though some comparisons are made in order to point up Luther's view. The etymology of the term ''conscience” and the historical background are not included. Related subjects are touched on only insofar as they contribute to the problem as stated. Various practical applications are referred to because Luther referred to conscience mostly in actual experienced cases.

Natural Theology In Lutheran Theology, Elvin Walter Janetzki

Bachelor of Divinity

While it is not our purpose within the limited compass of this paper to gather together the various philosophical and theological opinions of the past and the present held by those who doubt or reject the va1idity of the doctrine in question, it will be necessary briefly to refer to some of the most important of these opinions inasmuch as they have some bearing on shaping the attitude of some Lutheran theologians of more recent times in regard to the matter of Natural Theology and Natural Law.

The Doctrine Of Justification According To The Parable Of The Merciless Servant (Matt 18), Robert Glen Johnston Jun 1957

The Doctrine Of Justification According To The Parable Of The Merciless Servant (Matt 18), Robert Glen Johnston

Bachelor of Divinity

It is an accepted maxim that theologia parabolica non est argumentativa. It is, thus, not accepted procedure to derive a doctrine from a parable. Yet the proposition of this thesis is to show how the doctrine of justification is related to this parable by demonstrating how God's act of justifying men is described herein.

A Theological Study Of Baptism And The Lord's Supper As Expressed At The Hanover Convention Of The Lutheran World Federation, Paul Martin Volz

Bachelor of Divinity

The study which here presents the theology of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper expressed at the Hannover Convention of the Lutheran World Federation is an outgrowth of the writer's concern to know what was said on theological matters by members of the Lutheran World Federation assembled in their first official convention as a federation of Lutherans.

Aspects Of The Relationship Of Faith To Conscience In Luther's Sermons, 1528-1532, William Arthur Olsen Jun 1956

Aspects Of The Relationship Of Faith To Conscience In Luther's Sermons, 1528-1532, William Arthur Olsen

Bachelor of Divinity

A brief study revealed numerous examples of the close relationship Luther established between faith and conscience in both his formal theological writings and his sermons as they have come down to us. This thesis seeks on a 1imited scale to establish and delineate that relationship between faith and conscience in the theology of Luther.

Both terms about which the thesis revolves are very prominent in the writings of Luther. That “faith” is a decisive and frequently used word in his theology seems to require no documentation.

The Anthropology Of Communism, Arthur Simon Jun 1956

The Anthropology Of Communism, Arthur Simon

Bachelor of Divinity

This essay is an investigation of the communist view of man and an attempt to indicate a few implications of the same for the Christian Church. The topic itself is a broad one. The available material, both primary and secondary, comprises too long a list for the research this writer was able to do. The bibliography will indicate, however, that at least some of the basic primary writings were consulted as well as a number of the better commentaries on communism.

The Immortality Of The Soul As Presented In The Lutheran Confessons, Victor Felten

Bachelor of Divinity

The study of the concept of the immortality of the individual soul, or at least of survival in some form after death, seeks to ascertain the fate of condition, temporary or eternal, of individual souls, and how far the issues of the future depend on the present life. Here is where immortality is basic to eschatological implications.

Reinhold Niebuhr's Concept Of The Church, David L. Luecke Jun 1956

Reinhold Niebuhr's Concept Of The Church, David L. Luecke

The Concept Of Human Nature And Destiny In Recent Psycho-Sociological Studies, Paul Heyne Jun 1956

The Concept Of Human Nature And Destiny In Recent Psycho-Sociological Studies, Paul Heyne

Bachelor of Divinity

The emphasis in this paper will be on the Neo-Freudians, the “psych-sociologists” who made use of Freud’s method and in the course of their investigation developed a concept of human nature radically different from his. The continuities will be stressed throughout, for this paper is intended to indicate the similarities and the differences between the “scientific” theory of human nature whose study Freud initiated and the traditional theory of Christianity.

The Bad Boll Enterprise 1948-1954, Hans Spalteholz Jun 1955

The Bad Boll Enterprise 1948-1954, Hans Spalteholz

Bachelor of Divinity

The thesis, however, does not deal with all the conferences which have been lumped together at times under the title of “Bad Boll.” This thesis limits itself to the free theological conferences which were held in Germany by the Missouri Synod primarily with Lutherans not in fellowship with the Missouri Synod, i.e., the Landeskirchen, the regional churches.

Arabic Cognates In The Hebrew Text Of Isaiah Chapters 40-66, Ernest Hahn Jun 1955

Arabic Cognates In The Hebrew Text Of Isaiah Chapters 40-66, Ernest Hahn

Bachelor of Divinity

The last twenty-seven chapters of Isaiah have been selected since they form a unified section designated by many scholars the so-called Second Isaiah. This essay by no means intends to deal with all the Arabic cognates of Hebrew vocables in this division. It only seeks those cognates which may shed additional light on the Hebrew, especially the Hebrew words which are of rare occurrence in the Old Testament.

An Anaylsis And Comparison Of Eschatological Elements In The Hymns And Sermons Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, James R. Luecke Jun 1955

An Anaylsis And Comparison Of Eschatological Elements In The Hymns And Sermons Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, James R. Luecke

Bachelor of Divinity

It is in the wake of the proceedings of the Evanston Assembly of the World Council of Churches, and the re-examination of the Christian Hope in nearly every denomination of Christendom that this paper has been prepared. If it can truly be said that the actual living doctrine of a church is not properly that contained in its books only, but rather also that proclaimed from its pulpits and in the worship of its people, then this paper has value. It is the writer's belief that this study will suggest more nearly than any other study to date the actual …

Soren Kierkegaard's Critique Of Nineteenth Century Christiandom, Andrew M. Weyermann Jun 1955

Soren Kierkegaard's Critique Of Nineteenth Century Christiandom, Andrew M. Weyermann

Bachelor of Divinity

Every criticism and evaluation of Kierkegaard’s message is made on his grounds and on the basis of his works. The basic criteria for criticism is the criteria Kierkegaard employed to judge his age; namely, Christianity of the New Testament. As he saw it, his task was to define what it took.ma to be a Christian on the basis of the New Testament. The question is: to what extent does Kierkegaard in his attack actually base his criticism and corrective on the interpretation of Christianity in the New Testament? This question is posed with the recognition that Kierkegaard himself did not …

The Brief Study Of The Double Edition Of St Cyprian's De Unitate Ecclesiae, Herbert John Bouman Jun 1955

The Brief Study Of The Double Edition Of St Cyprian's De Unitate Ecclesiae, Herbert John Bouman

Bachelor of Divinity

This study is occasioned by the fact that the fourth chapter of the treatise “De Unitate Ecclesias,” written by the Bishop of Carthage, St. Cyprian, about 251 A.D., has come down in two quite different forms. One version apparently bases the unity of the Church in explicit terms on the primacy of Peter over and above the authority of other bishops, while the other version speaks in more cautious and general terms of Peter as a symbol of unity and power in which all bishops share equally.

John Wesley's Concept Of Santification, Robert Day Mcamis Jun 1955

John Wesley's Concept Of Santification, Robert Day Mcamis

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this thesis to set forth clearly and objectively the concept of sanctification as it was believed and taught by John Wesley. Concept is used to indicate thought or opinion or view. Sanctification is used in the narrow sense to mean the conduct of the Christian life or holiness of living which follows justification. This concept of sanctification will be limited to its doctrinal content and characteristics with a survey of influences which affected it in one way or another. No attempt is made to trace the social and political implications of this teaching, except in …

The Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church Abd Fellowship With Other Lutherans In America, Andrew Brondos

Bachelor of Divinity

The SELC has related itself positively and negatively to other Lutheran churches in the United States. With some church bodies it has declared agreement and has affiliated with this group--the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America. With others, though there have been repeated attempts and invitations for union, the SELC has declined to affiliate. These positions, affiliations or non-affiliations are the points considered in this thesis. That is the scope of this thesis in content. In time the scope of this thesis includes the period from the organizing of the SELC in September of 1902 to the end of …

Thomas Aquinas' Concept Of The Word In His Contemporary On First Corinthians, Robert Scharlemann Jun 1955

Thomas Aquinas' Concept Of The Word In His Contemporary On First Corinthians, Robert Scharlemann

Bachelor of Divinity

Yet in the Thomistic synthesis, which has so strong an appeal as a philosophical structure, the Holy Scriptures are, according to Thomas, to be accorded the highest place. The question, therefore, a rises as to the exact manner in which the Scriptures take their place. Or, to put the question in a broader framework, in what manner does the Word of God, that is, the intelligible revelation of God, fit into the Thomistic structure? Is Thomas’ philosophical and theological structure really complete without that Word? That in a certain sense it is not complete without it is clear. Still in …

An Exploratory Study Of Anthroposophy, Everett Kalin Jun 1955

An Exploratory Study Of Anthroposophy, Everett Kalin

Bachelor of Divinity

As a way of' attaining knowledge and of developing man’s latent powers, Anthroposophy has some direct bearing on the Christian message. A Bachelor of Divinity thesis on the movement seems quite relevant, therefore. This thesis examines the life and teaching of Rudolf Steiner and the Anthroposophic movement which he started. It is an attempt to get a broad overview of Anthroposophy rather than concentrating on any one of its phases. It is an exploratory study of a preliminary nature, and in no measure does it try to be definitive on any part of the movement.

The Ethical Implications Of American Freemasonary, Andrew Simcak Jr Jun 1955

The Ethical Implications Of American Freemasonary, Andrew Simcak Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

This study endeavors to make visible the darkness permeating Masonry’s ethical teachings and to expose them what they really are—antichristian. The author attempts to lay bare the antichristian ethics of Freemasonry by comparing them with the Christian ethics. At the same time this study will, it is hoped, help the reader to discover and to realize the great gulf that separates the ethics of American Freemasonry from those of Christianity.

Evaluation Of The Rsv On The Basis Of First Peter, Stephen R. Brusco Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

Thus it is evident that this version has caused considerable controversy and difference of opinion. Therefore thorough and objective study is needed to determine the adequacy of this version, to ascertain whether it is true and accurate to the spirit of the original Greek text, to see whether it measures up to the claims made for it by the committee and publishers, to investigate whether or not this new 'Version is usable in public worship and private devotions. The present study is an effort in this direction. It is an evaluation of the RSV on the basis of the First …

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights In The Light Of Lutheran Theology, Theodore Ernst Jun 1954

The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights In The Light Of Lutheran Theology, Theodore Ernst

Bachelor of Divinity

Emphasis upon human rights in the Charter of the United Nations is not a vague, gossamer thread ephemerally appearing, disappearing, and reappearing. It rather constitutes one of the chief cornerstones upon which the Charter stands.

Martin Luther's Concept Of The Devil, Lester Zeitler Jun 1954

Martin Luther's Concept Of The Devil, Lester Zeitler

Bachelor of Divinity

It must be kept in mind that this thesis does not propose to relate and discuss in great detail every minute phase of Luther's concept of the devil. Such a study would take several years, for thoughts concerning the devil permeated nearly every area of Luther's writings. The St. Louis edition of Luther's Works devotes nearly twenty-two columns to an index registering Luther's comments on the devil. This thesis then may be more properly called a general overview of Luther's demonology.

Luther And Evangelical Radicalism, Walter L. Bouman Jun 1954

Luther And Evangelical Radicalism, Walter L. Bouman

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between Luther and this disparate radical element of the reformation. For this purpose we must distinguish between two aspects of the Radical Movement. Luther was forced to relate himself to Evangelical Radicalism as a historical phenomenon. This aspect of the relationship will be discussed in Chapter II of the thesis. Of greater importance is the theological relationship between Luther and Radicalism. Here we are concerned with a tendency rather than with a Historical group. While this tendency found expression in a historical group, it was also present in some of …
