Business As Missions: Applying Business As Missions To The Hospitality Industry, Leah J. Reist Apr 2015

Business As Missions: Applying Business As Missions To The Hospitality Industry, Leah J. Reist

Senior Honors Theses

Business is a vehicle highly useful for achieving specific missions for the kingdom of God that could not otherwise be accomplished. A Business as Missions (BAM) organization is one structure of business that focuses intently on accomplishing the mission of reaching others for the kingdom of God. BAMs can be utilized in virtually any industry; however, the following thesis focuses on the unique opportunities that exist within the hospitality industry. These unique opportunities are present because of its relational components and consumer demands for community and social interaction. A hostel is one specific form of a hospitality company that has …

The Violence Of Conversion: Proselytization And Interreligious Controversy In The Work Of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Chad Bauman Apr 2015

The Violence Of Conversion: Proselytization And Interreligious Controversy In The Work Of Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Chad Bauman

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Critics of Christianity in India have frequently accused Christianity of being a predatory, imperialistic religion with absolutist tendencies, and have framed Christian evangelism as an aggressive, uncouth act. More recently, however, and in an idiom that resonates with many contemporary Indians, Swami Dayananda Saraswati (1930-) has made the more controversial claim that the attempt to convert another person is itself an act of violence. In three parts, the paper 1) describes Dayananda’s claims, while bringing them into conversation with the arguments of earlier critics of Christianity (e.g., Mahatma Gandhi, Sita Ram Goel, Ashok Chowgule, Arun Shourie), 2) analyzes and critique …

Ethnicity, Tribalism And Racism: A Global Challenge For The Christian Church And Its Mission, Boubakar Sanou Apr 2015

Ethnicity, Tribalism And Racism: A Global Challenge For The Christian Church And Its Mission, Boubakar Sanou

Faculty Publications

Ethnic, tribal, and racial identities are a challenge not only to society in general but to the christian church in particular. as bearers of cultural differences, ethnic and racial differences are often seen as a difficulty to overcome rather than a gift from God to be treasured. Barreto (2011) puts it this way: Ethnic and racial differences are not the problem. Prejudice and racism inject our differences with the sinful notion that our difference leads to superiority and inferiority or the distorted belief that our differences are merely cultural cues for determining who is in and who is out, rather …

Apostle To Burma: A Case Study Of Ecumenical Evangelicalism In The Life Of Adoniram Judson, Jacob Manning Mar 2015

Apostle To Burma: A Case Study Of Ecumenical Evangelicalism In The Life Of Adoniram Judson, Jacob Manning

Library Research Prize Student Works

Adoniram (1788-1850) and Ann Judson (1789-1826) boarded the Caravan along with Samuel and Harriet Newell in Salem, Massachusetts on February 19, 1812 with a directive from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to preach the Gospel in the Far East. Four months later, the missionaries arrived in India, but the Judsons sailed once more before they began a life of missionary labor in the kingdom of Burma. Amidst the joys of successful Bible translation and establishment of a Baptist congregation in Burma, Ann and Adoniram suffered tremendous loss: none of their three children survived infancy, and Ann died …

A Simple Cup Of Coffee: What Starbucks Can Teach The Church About Hospitality In How We Reach Our Neighbors, John Austin Hinkle Jr. Feb 2015

A Simple Cup Of Coffee: What Starbucks Can Teach The Church About Hospitality In How We Reach Our Neighbors, John Austin Hinkle Jr.

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation explores a local church’s implementation of Christian hospitality through the examination of a local Starbucks coffee house that successfully offers hospitality to its customers both in and outside its community. A critical problem facing mainline churches today is a decline in overall membership and worship participation. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has experienced a significant decline over the last 40 years. This decline is now being experienced even in larger evangelical churches. In this dissertation the researcher plans to explore whether a local Presbyterian Church can more effectively reach out to its neighboring community by renewing and implementing outward …

Ethnic Identity Maintenance Within The Latino-American Church: A Structuration Perspective, Charles W. Choi, Deborah Berho Jan 2015

Ethnic Identity Maintenance Within The Latino-American Church: A Structuration Perspective, Charles W. Choi, Deborah Berho

Faculty Publications - Department of World Languages, Sociology & Cultural Studies

The Latino ethnic/immigrant church plays a significant role in maintaining the ethnic identity of its congregants. Through the perspective of structuration theory, this qualitative analysis investigates how the activities of the church impact its members and how an individual might contribute to the cultural structure of the Latino church (i.e., duality of structure). Interviews of 25 pastors from Spanish-speaking congregations in both urban and rural settings in Oregon resulted in several themes including the initial planting of the church, the denominational structure, the emergence of a new multiethnic cultural identity, generational differences, and the influence of Spanish.

Reflecting On And Equipping For Christian Mission, Stephen Bevans, Teresa Chai, Nelson Jennings, Knud Jorgensen, Dietrich Werner Jan 2015

Reflecting On And Equipping For Christian Mission, Stephen Bevans, Teresa Chai, Nelson Jennings, Knud Jorgensen, Dietrich Werner

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

This volume looks at mission formation for all Christians and missionary formation for mission workers, agencies and churches in a changing situation of mission. The focus is on educating the whole people of God. Here is the reason for the title of this volume: Reflecting on and Equipping for Christian Mission. Theological education in the broad sense participates in the task of equipping people for God’s mission in today’s world. At the same time we affirm that all theological education is contextual and that no particular context should exercise dominant influence.

Creation Care In Christian Mission, Kapya Kaoma Jan 2015

Creation Care In Christian Mission, Kapya Kaoma

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

As the world comes to terms with the human-caused destruction of God's sacred creation, whether Global Christianity will celebrate a bi-centennial Edinburgh 2110 becomes a real question. Yet, as Creation Care in Christian Mission shows, the mounting and life-threatening ecological crisis is at the heart of the mission of God. The volume's contributing authors represent a wide range of Christian traditions and geographical regions on which they draw to initiate dialogue on creation care within the wider global Christian community. They explore hard questions relative to climate change, population growth, pollution, poverty, sustainability, economic justice, deforestation, gender, and land issues. …

Evangelism And Diakonia In Context, Rose Dowsett, Isabel Phiri, Dawit Olika Terfassa, Hwa Yung, Knud Jorgensen Jan 2015

Evangelism And Diakonia In Context, Rose Dowsett, Isabel Phiri, Dawit Olika Terfassa, Hwa Yung, Knud Jorgensen

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Evangelism and diakonia belong together in the perspective of the Great Commission. Evangelism is sharing one’s faith and conviction with other people and inviting them to discipleship. Diakonia is the gospel and our faith in action and is expressed through loving our neighbor. Evangelism and diakonia are like the two blades on a pair of scissors. They give the church identity and they are functions of the church. This is not just a matter of doing evangelism and diakonia in balance and alongside each other. Rather, evangelism and proclamation have social and diaconal consequences as we call people to discipleship …

Freedom Of Belief & Christian Mission, Hans Aage Gravaas, Christof Sauer, Tormod Engelsviken, Maqsood Kamil, Knud Jorgensen

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

Christian mission takes place in a world with increasing interreligious tensions, including violence and persecution. Politics, economics, religion, ethnicity and other factors play a role in these tensions. Christians too are involved in such conflicts, sometimes as those who are persecuted and sometimes as those participating in violence. ‘Freedom of religion and belief’ is a core value in the UN Human Rights Declaration. At the same time it is a core biblical value. Obstacles to and attacks on freedom of belief are therefore a central concern for witnessing to Christ. The purpose of this volume on Freedom of Belief and …
