Paul's Detention Site In Israel Believed Found

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Reuters reports that archaeologists in Israel have uncovered a Roman governmental complex in Caesarea where they believe Paul was held in detention. In Acts 23-26 we read that Paul was kept in Herod's judgment hall in Caesarea, where he faced in turn Felix, Festus, and Agrippa and where he appealed to be sent before Caesar's judgment seat in Rome. An inscription found in the site indicates that the complex housed the government bureau responsible for internal security for Judea, making this complex the likely spot for Paul's incarceration and hearing before the Roman governor.

Hebraic Elements In The Language Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

Recent research has yielded another interesting clue about the language of the Nephites and about the manner in which it was translated into English. By comparing the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon to the subsequent printed versions, Royal Skousen has found that the original English-language text of the Book of Mormon contained expressions that are uncharacteristic of English. One such expression is a Hebrew-like conditional clause.

The Debate Over Biblical Archaeology, John Tvedtnes Aug 2023

The Debate Over Biblical Archaeology, John Tvedtnes

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

There are two major camps among archaeologists studying biblical lands. The so-called "minimalists" tend to accept only a bare minimum of information from the Bible as historical fact, while the "maximalists," believe that much of it (although not all) is real history. The latter point to archaeological evidence such as the recently discovered eighth-century B.C. inscription mentioning "the house of David." The minimalists dismiss this and a number of other finds inscribed with biblical names as forgeries planted for archaeologists to discover.

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

T he story of the authenticating of the Grolier Codex twenty-five years ago still teaches some valuable lessons about the dangers of jumping to conclusions and the problems of name-calling, even though the scholars involved no longer hold to their original positions. As, discussed recently by John L. Sorenson, the discovery of ancient manuscripts is a touchy issue that, for some people, can be unsettling.

Language Sciences And Their Impact On Dispelling The Illusion Of Difference And Contradiction In The Book Of God, Ahmed Ababneh

Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series

This study examines the employment of language sciences to dispel the illusion of difference and contradiction in the Holy Qur’an through the use of rhetoric and grammar. Rhetoric is explored through its three branches: semantics, eloquence, and "badi" (embellishment). In semantics, techniques such as the meanings of letters, the method of delivering information and intent, implication and explicitness, and presenting assumptions as certainties or straightforward ideas are analyzed. The rhetorical device of metaphor is also considered. For the science of "badi," the study demonstrates that certain topics influence dispelling misconception, focusing on moral enhancements like exaggeration in description—not for the …

Sources Of Income For Women In Islam, Abdulfattah Al-Samman

Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series

According to some studies, the feminization of poverty has become a common trend in Islamic societies, with rates exceeding 70%. This situation directly contradicts the essence of Sharia, which provides women with thirty sources of income and ensures their financial independence and care in all circumstances. If a woman is wealthy, Sharia safeguards her wealth and grants her the freedom to spend it as she wishes. In the Muslim community, a breadwinner is typically responsible for meeting her needs, protecting her honor, and providing food, drink, clothing, and housing according to his ability. In the absence of a breadwinner, Allah …

Irs-Sanctioned Secrecy For Religious Nonprofits: Stepstone Or Stumbling Block?, Mark W. Smith

Master's Projects and Capstones

Internal Revenue Service code automatically confers 501(c)3 nonprofit charity status on religious nonprofits which appear to be “A church, convention of churches, or association of churches described in section 170(b)(1)(A)(i),” as labeled in the IRS Form 990. Additionally, religious charities functioning as a part of a church have no requirement to report any financial information or policies to the IRS or anyone else. This acquiescence to secrecy keeps most of the data on these nonprofit organizations unavailable for research or to inform legislative action or agency policies. This automatic status may also lead to complacency in organizations in financial accountability, …
