Anton Transcript Studied, Nibleyana on a Grand Scale, Papers Received, and Projects in the Mill. As reported in the last newsletter, a group of scholars was invited to examine an extensive effort made to translate the Anthon Transcript, the recently discovered page of characters which Martin Harris took to New York City for Charles Anthon's examination in 1829. John Sorenson and Jack Welch integrated the individually-made evaluations and provided than to the translator.

Our Readers Respond and New Members of the Team. FARMS director Jack Welch is jubilant over the enthusiastic response of readers. There is mail in the box every day: requests for information, welcomed contributions, expressions of support and gratitude. Over five hundred copies of different items from the Reprint Series and the Preliminary Reports had already been sent out by mid-October. "I estimate that there was a 20 percent response to the July Newsletter," says Jack, "and Howard Ruff thinks he's successful is he gets between a one and two percent response."

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The first Newsletter announced the ambitious goal of raising $20,000 by June 30, 1981. For practical purposes that goal has been reached, culminated by recent donations of an IBM typewriter and a small computer system . The computer, a TRS-80 system with 48K capacity, includes CPU, expansion interface, monitor, two disc drives, printer and custom desk. It was the gift of Terry Jeffers, a director in the Howard Ruff organization. FARMS will use it to keep the mailing list straight -- now grown to over a thousand names -- and for indexing papers, notes, bibliographies and research projects.

Robert F. Smith, "It Came to Pass' in the Bible and Book of Mormon." Manuscript, 1980. Pointing out that computer analysis will be necessary to make his observations conclusive, the author shows that the Book of Mormon, though less than a third the length of the King James Bible, contains more than twice as many recurrences of "came/come to pass." Furthermore, extensive cataloguing shows that all but three of the twenty books containing that phrase in the Bible are in the Old Testament. Another interesting characteristic: the phrase usually occurs in prose narrative, in both volumes of scripture. He explains …

Research Committee Reports
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
FARMS is organized around research committees who largely determine the Foundation's program . The first fully-staffed committee is the twelve person panel on Book of Mormon-New World, chaired by John Sorenson. Its duties include evaluating research projects for technical adequacy, noting approaches or topics which might be fruitfully pursued, reporting on relevant research presented at professional meetings, responding to inquiries in their area of expertise, and otherwise serving as a panel of helpful scholarly resources . An evaluative and scholarly arm, not an administrative entity, the group's members vary in degree of involvement according to the time they feel they …

The uncollected papers of Hugh Nibley, which he has given to FARMS, include a mouthwatering assortment of his work for the past twenty years. No decision has yet been made whether to prepare a comprehensive book or to offer them in a separate series of FARMS reprints. They include his 1968-69 series from The Improvement Era on the Book of Abraham, his 1975-76 series for The Ensign on Enoch, multi-part articles on baptism for the dead, "The Stick of Judah and the Stick of Joseph," a study of Book of Mormon criticism, some of his classical studies on the ancient …

Projects described in the November 1980 newsletter continue, meanwhile here we spotlight another challenging research activity. John Hilton of Walnut Creek, California, has long had an interest in Book of Mormon studies. But his main talent is talking to computers -- and getting answers. He and his (non-Mormon) collaborator, Kenneth D. Jenkins, have access to a large computer complex during many hours per day . It's already ingested the modern and 1830 texts of the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and the King James version of the Bible, thanks to the cooperation of …

A trio of papers on the so-called "Lehi's Cave" near Jerusalem begins with a short paper by Lamar C. Barrett summarizing what is known about the cave, usefully introducing a topic where speculation and folklore have multiplied . Joseph Naveh's paper from the Israel Exploration Journal (1963) describes the discovery of the cave and its contents and gives a proposed translation of the inscriptions scratched on the wall. It was obviously a burial cave since it contains three funerary benches but no riches or treasures. The inscriptions, he postulates, were done at different times and include the very unusual figures …

Cooperation. The Foundation has seen a lot of it in the lase three months, from many sides! And the results are rewarding to all, as this issue of the Newsletter should show. We are more efficient, thanks to institutional cooperation from Brigham Young University . We are broader based, thanks to cooperation from the Church Educational System and BYU's Campus Education Week. We are more productive, thanks to new volunteers. We can plan more confidently, thanks to generous gifts and pledges. We continue to discover, without surprise, that there is something for everyone to do.

One of the papers offered in this issues' Reprint Series is "Pre-Columbian Old World Coins in America: An Examination of the Evidence, '' by Jeremiah F. Epstein (Current Anthropology 21 [Feb. 1980]: 1-20). Epstein surveys the field of Old World coins dating to pre-Columbian times that have been found in the United States, particularly within the last three decades, to determine how seriously such items should be taken. If valid, the existence of such coins would obviously be a powerful argument for diffusionists.

The Book of Mormon Bibliography, an index of all serious studies about the Book of Mormon, should be ready for distribution this fall . It already contains over 1,850 entries. This monumental bibliography will be the first relatively comprehensive listing of articles, papers, book and theses dealing with the Book of Mormon. It will provide a solid base for the Book of Mormon Encyclopedia and facilitate other organized research on Book of Mormon topics as well as guide development of the FARMS Reprint series. It should also help prevent unnecessary duplication of research. When it is available, we hope many …
