Tape Piece, Kyle Vanderburg
Tape Piece, Kyle Vanderburg
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Tape Piece is part of a series of single-sound-source daydream pieces, where a solitary object or family of objects is repurposed to create an otherworldly soundscape. This work uses tape--masking, scotch, aluminum, packing, and duct--sometimes recognizable, and sometimes heavily processed. The familiar is juxtaposed with the fresh, and what starts out with unrolling and tearing quickly unravels as sounds evocative of gunfire, of bombs and explosions, and of Geiger counters suggesting the downfall of civilization. New creatures emerge throughout, each trying to find their place in a world that has come unglued.
Human Vs. Transhuman: Act One, Cecilia Suhr
Human Vs. Transhuman: Act One, Cecilia Suhr
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
This work investigates the conflict between human and transhuman; to that end, the performance employs visual representations of human and transhuman interaction. The music and visual realms interact in real time to enhance the immersive experience of understanding the tension between machines and humans. Voice improvisation also interacts with live processing to create a unique sonic landscape. Overall, this is a multimedia, experimental contemporary performance at the intersection of technology and acoustic music.
Consort Yu, Yao Hsiao
Consort Yu, Yao Hsiao
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
In Consort Yu for voice and live electronics, the integration of hand gestures and the use of Leap Motion holds profound significance in presenting Peking Opera. Unlike modern acting conventions, Peking Opera performers rely heavily on hand gestures to convey emotion and narrative. With limited body movements, gestures such as the iconic "Lotus Finger" become essential tools for expression. These nuanced gestures convey a wide range of emotions and intentions, enriching the storytelling experience.
My creative process bridges the rich traditions of Peking Opera with the realm of contemporary electronic music. First, I imitated the timbres and rhythms characteristic of …
Dreamcatcher, Ian Evans Guthrie
Dreamcatcher, Ian Evans Guthrie
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
Dreamcatcher is a composition for piano and fixed media. Dreamcatcher is the organic result of a commission from and collaboration with a contemporary choreographer. Approached at a recent summer camp about composing music for a “dreamy” choreography, it became a work that synthesizes the sounds of our environment, the subconscious of sleep, the nostalgia of a cleaner world, and the hope of a better future.
Drawing Noise, Ivan Elezovic
Drawing Noise, Ivan Elezovic
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
DRAWING NOISE is a collaboration between a painter, a composer, and a photographer-video artist. The main intention is to further explore the ambient music that painting and drawing produce. The approach of audio is correlated with the sounds of various hand-movements by color pens on textured drywall. The method of making and designing audio and visual documentation of the creation of the wall drawings serve as the raw material for the final video. The audio in the project originates from recorded artistic performance that portrays a series of circle-shape objects in real time. Furthermore, various layers of sounds are added …

Hearing The Wind Again, Linda Antas
Hearing The Wind Again, Linda Antas
Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction
I love listening to the wind blow through the forests and mountains—hearing its pitch and timbre change, its approaching and passing, and its power. This piece was inspired by the sound of the wind, and my mother’s tears at hearing the wind. Before getting hearing aids, she hadn’t heard it for years.

A Warm Embrace Amongst Isolated Tears, Gia Dreyer
A Warm Embrace Amongst Isolated Tears, Gia Dreyer
Theses and Dissertations
a warm embrace amongst isolated tears behaves as an ekphrasis of Paula Rego’s triptych The Pillowman (2004). An anecdotal interpretation of Martin McDonagh’s titular play The Pillowman (2003), Rego addresses the story of the Pillowman through her father’s depression. This piece effloresces from the trace of the Pillowman into considering the remnants of suffering exhibited in both works by Rego and McDonagh.
The trumpet has been ontologically oriented to fanfare and pomp by peripheral structures of imperial order. The trumpet and the nation-state are intertwined through militaristic imposition. What does it mean to strip away the power of juridical dominance …

The document preserves a complete and unedited transcript of an exploratory conversation conducted without predetermined research aims, marking the author’s first encounter with a large-language-model conversational interface. Although the exchange includes creative experimentation—including musical and poetic prompts—the discussion remains informal and wide-ranging, and no theoretical framework is articulated at this stage. Rather, this transcript is published as primary-source material documenting the moment of discovery and experimentation that precedes …
Prosodic Comparisons Between Speech And Music For Different Emotions, Reagan Brothers
Prosodic Comparisons Between Speech And Music For Different Emotions, Reagan Brothers
Honors Projects
This study compares the prosodic acoustic characteristics between different emotional expressions in speech and clarinet playing and evaluates the similarities in prosody between these two domains. The prosodic features analyzed include pitch, loudness, and duration, which are the psychoacoustic terms referring to fundamental frequency [fo], intensity, and rate of time. The American folksong “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” was both spoken and performed with three emotions: neutral, sad, and happy. The first comparison was how each prosodic characteristic compared across the three different emotions within each domain, and then prosody was compared across the two domains …

“Starlight Suite”: A Compositional Exploration Of The Argo Navis Constellations In Three Movements, Adam Miller
Student Publications
This thesis explores a compositional technique in which stellar constellations are arranged upon musical staves in a variety of iterations to create a basis from which to draw melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material. These raw extrapolations of unaltered notes are then arranged and orchestrated into thematic music for full orchestra, centered around elements from the mythological background behind the constellations used. An accompanying analysis explains the specific applications of this technique within each movement of the work, the significance of each, and the variety of ways in which musical inspiration was drawn from the raw materials. The objective of this …

Metamorphosis: An Original Jazz Guitar Concerto Exploring Improvisation And Polystylistic Strategies In The Modern Concerto, Ronnie J. Whitt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The electric guitar is underutilized in large ensemble art music. Some composers have sought to alleviate this deficiency by expanding the literature through the electric guitar concerto. Few electric guitar concerti are written for improvised jazz guitar, therefore presenting a need for this research. In this thesis, I explore the development of the jazz guitar concerto and nine compositional strategies that benefit composers writing a multi-genre jazz guitar concerto. I analyze selected jazz guitar concerti through lenses, including phrase-level compositional devices, textural and timbral schema, and musical hybridity, to identify these strategies. These concerti include: D.J. Sparr’s Katrina, Jake …

Passive Listening: Exploring Interpassivity In Ambient Music, David Chechelashvili, Alan Brown
Passive Listening: Exploring Interpassivity In Ambient Music, David Chechelashvili, Alan Brown
Staff Scholarship - New Zealand
The landscape of ambient music presents unique challenges for critique and classification due to its wide range of subgenres, functions and goals. Often defined by its atmospheric and immersive qualities, ambient music is traditionally seen as providing a backdrop for relaxation or as a means to block out the harsh reality of the outside world. This dominant theory, while valuable in certain contexts, tends to oversimplify the multifaceted nature of ambient music and ignores the potential for more nuanced listening experiences. The proposed alternative theory of interpassivity challenges existing understandings of ambient music production and consumption modes. Drawing on psychoanalytic …

The Resonance Of Desire: A Sonic Exploration And Guide To Recreating Disney’S Signature ‘I Want’ Songs, Aiyanna E. Riley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the sonic architecture of Disney’s Renaissance-era “I Want” songs and develops a framework for recreating their signature production style. This study analyzes how vocal timbre, microphone choices, layering, stereo placement, and mixing strategies contribute to the immersive qualities that define the Disney sound. Drawing from historical accounts, interviews with industry professionals, and technical literature, the thesis documents production practices unexamined in scholarly work. Inspired by David Gibson’s The Art of Mixing, my analyses prioritize spatial and textural qualities in Disney mixes, highlighting how sound design shapes narrative impact. The study culminates in two original compositions modeled …
Learning How To Practice Takes Practice, Micah Killion, Robert Duke
Learning How To Practice Takes Practice, Micah Killion, Robert Duke
John J. Cali School of Music Scholarship and Creative Works
Effective music learning depends on effective music practice. Although time spent with teachers is an important component of young musicians’ development, time spent alone practicing is perhaps even more consequential. Researchers and teachers have offered many prescriptions about effective music practice, yet observations of young musicians’ actual practice reveal that their behavior in the practice room is often quite unlike what teachers envision. The most important aspects of effective practice are the thinking, perceiving, and decision-making that serve to organize how musicians spend their time. We discuss how to help students focus their attention in ways that lead to the …
