0213: Joseph Frye Orderly Book, 1795-1778, Marshall University Special Collections

This collection consists of a microfilm copy of an orderly book kept by Sgt. Erastus Harris of Medway, Mass. Harris recorded orders while at Castle Island (Boston) and Fort Cumberland (Nova Scotia) under the command of Joseph Frye and Brig. Gen. Timothy Ruggles as a member of Frye's regiment of Mass. Provincials during the French and Indian War (1759-60), and while stationed with the 1st Massachusetts Regiment of Guards under the command of Col. Jonathan Reed from Apr.-June 1778.

This collection contains a letter written by Aaron Gatchel on April 18, 1865 in Petersburg, Virginia to his brother David in Urichsville, Ohio. The letter describes an engagement at Dinwiddie Court House, Virginia; gives losses of the 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Company B; and comments on Lincoln's assassination. A transcript of the letter is included in the collection.

This thesis is a survey of the available material on the submarine issue during 1914-1917 as a factor in German-American relations which contributed to the American declaration of war in April 1917. No other scholarly work is devoted solely to the submarine issue during this period. The purpose of this thesis is to focus on the submarine as an international legal issue. German-American relations were strained during 1914-1917, because of the different interpretations of international law regarding the submarine. On September 95, 1861, Lieutenant General Edmund Kirby Smith reported to his new command at the Department of East Tennessee. It was a troubled command; Kirby Smith's insufficient army was pressed from the north by Brigadier General George Buell. of the Morgan, and from the west by Major General Don Carlos To save his command from certain defeat at the hands superior Union armies, Kirby Smith was able to convince General Braxton Bragg to move his army by rail to East Tennessee.

Mission Of Mercy: The U.S. Military Mission In Berlin, 1919, Thomas R. Magnuson

Master's Theses

My topic for this thesis, the U. S. Military Mission in Berlin in 1919, was the organization responsible for tending to allied prisoners imprisoned in Germany after the First World War. Most of these prisoners were Russians cut off from their homes by the Russian Revolution and the allied strategy for containing the Soviet threat. At no time did the Mission's staff number over 1,000, but this small organization worked wonders in sustaining and repatri­ating thousands of non-American prisoners. The scope of the Mission's work created numerous problems in organization and presentation.

This collection is composed of a xerox copy of an account book and a copy of a circa 1900 photograph of Logan County Civil War veterans with twenty-four individuals identified. The account book says on the cover, “John Garrett, His Book, 1830”. Inside is financial information whose context is difficult to ascertain due to the low quality of the scans. The original accession record states that the book is the account book of the unit.

This collection is composed of letters and postcards to Lillian from her brothers Donald and Darrell while they served and trained for WWI. Included in the collection are Lillian’s personal papers during her high school and early college years, such as programs, yearbooks, student publications, and grade reports. Also included are collected publications, clippings, and ephemera related to her brothers’ service in WWI.

It is uncertain how the folder of Clendenning letters written during WWI were added to the collection, but they are from Robert Clendenning (serving in the war) to his father on the home front.

The record book is a printed form book entitled, “Barrett’s Form of Soldiers’ Relief Record, Being a Record of Resident Indigent Union Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, and Wives, Widows and Minor Children of Same, Entitled to Relief under an Act passed March 16th, 1887.” Twelve pages record payments to `resident indigent Union soldiers, sailors and marines, and wives, widows and minor children of same. . .' This collection is composed of a typescript copy of a portion (pages 74-87) of “Autobiography of Dr. Thomas H. Barton, the self-made physician of Syracuse, Ohio, including a history of the Fourth Regt. West Va. Vol. Inf’y, with an account of Col. Lightburn’s Retreat” published by Charleston, West Virginia Printing Company in 1890. The document does not cover Barton’s personal life, and only discusses his time as a doctor for his regiment in the Civil War. The autobiography discusses military matters primarily but does go into details as to a physician’s life in the camps and treatment of wounds sustained …
