Paper titled “George Freas: Portrait of a Soldier,” written by Merrill Alan Barrow for a Western Kentucky University United States history class in November 1990. Freas, a native of Simpson County, served as a United States Army bomber pilot, parachuted from his plane in the Marne Forest, March 1945, and attempted to escape via the French Underground, but was captured and imprisoned until May 1945.

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
This week I had the chance to visit National Archives 1 to do some research for work into the history of the Federal Armory at Harpers Ferry, and particularly the building I work in. Mather Training Center waswas the Superintendent's House before the War came and upended the entire town. It was nice to get back into the stacks downtown and dig through musty boxes of (in this case) Office of the Chief of Ordinance records.
It brought to mind the last time that I got the chance to root around in the trove that is the Nation's repository down …

Letter, 8 January 1865, from Jonathan Wood, Smithfield, Pennsylvania, to his son, Union soldier Pliny Wood. He writes with sympathy for the soldiers’ hardships, instructs him on saving postage, criticizes the privileges of congressmen, expresses contempt for the treason of Jefferson Davis and the Confederates, and remarks on the suffering of prisoners of war at Andersonville, Georgia; nevertheless, he hopes for reconciliation with ordinary Southerners after their defeat and repentance.
