Letter, 24 December 1861, to his brother from James Mohr, encamped with the Union Army near the Green River fifteen miles from Mammoth Cave. He remarks on the rain and cold, the destruction by Confederates of a bridge over the river, a recent skirmish, his visit to a cave, and his expected arrival in Bowling Green, Kentucky for the new year. Includes data on Mohr’s regiment, the Fifth U. S. Artillery, Battery H.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 872. Diary of James William Emerson, Covington, Kentucky, while he was enlisted in the United States Navy. He enlisted in 1941 and served as a machinist’s mate on the USS Stevenson. The diary dates from 1943-1944 and details his round trip journey from Cape Henry, Virginia to French Morocco. Other items include rank insignias (3), training certificate, discharge papers, newspaper clipping, biographical information, etc.

I got in trouble down in the District of Columbia before Christmas. I made the mistake of asking friend and fellow blogger Aaron Urbanski why I should care who Thaddeus Kosciuszko was. He went mildly ballistic. Aaron has a soft spot in his heart for the old Polish general, partially because his last name is Urbanski. I can't begrudge him that.
So the name "Kosciuszko" has been rattling violently around in my head since December. Recently it broke free. And it was because of the Civil War, Gettysburg and a Pennsylvanian general that I found out why Thaddeus Kosciuszko might …
