The Illumination Of An English Psalter: A Preliminary Assessment, Bruce Watson
The Illumination Of An English Psalter: A Preliminary Assessment, Bruce Watson
The Courier
Several years ago the George Arents Research Library, Syracuse University, acquired a small English illuminated psalter (Uncat. MS 1), dated ca. 1300. It formerly had been in the collection of the Virtue and Cahill Library of the Cathedral Chapter of the Diocese of Portsmouth. Thus far, to the best of my knowledge, the only publication of the work has been the necessarily brief description of it by Barbara Larkin and Kenneth Pennington in the exhibition catalogue Medieval Art in Upstate New York. Placement of the style of the illumination of this psalter in the development of English Gothic manuscript painting …
An Extension Of Mcguire's Inoculation Theory T8 Controversial Topics, Michele S. Roberts
An Extension Of Mcguire's Inoculation Theory T8 Controversial Topics, Michele S. Roberts
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extension of McGuire's inoculation theory to controversial topics. It was assumed that the employment of controversial topics would reverse the conditions described as obtaining with the employment of cultural truisms. McGuire's first study on the inoculation theory was used as a paradigm, and three hypotheses were investigated: Hypothesis One: A supportive treatment will be superior to a refutational treatment in conferring resistance to persuasion. Hypothesis Two: An active participation in developing defenses will increase the amount of immunity conferred. Hypothesis Three: There is an interactive effect between the type of defense …
The Influence Of Renaissance Neoplatonism On Michelangelo, Judith Carole Riley
The Influence Of Renaissance Neoplatonism On Michelangelo, Judith Carole Riley
History Theses & Dissertations
The problem of interpreting Michelangelo's art, and poetry in terms of the Renaissance philosophy of Neoplatonism has long been debated. After establishing that Michelangelo was personally acquainted with the major philosophers Marsillo Finco and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, selected major works by the artist are analyzed as to how they illustrate the major concepts of Neoplatonism. Supporting evidence, is drawn from Michelangelo ' poetry, in which he expressed his esthetic theory, which included the Platonic system of ideal forms; a hierarchical universe; the perfectibility of the human soul through contemplation; and the exercise of human love as preparation for divine …

Smith Ms 36: A Study In Fifteenth Century Manuscript Illumination, Gloria K. Fiero
The Courier
A Book of Hours written in Dutch was donated to the Syracuse Public Library by J. William Smith in 1908, but received little publicity until 1974, when it was included in an exhibition of medieval art at the Everson Museum, entitled "Medieval Art in Upstate New York." Briefly described in the catalog of that exhibition, and briefly loaned to the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University, this manuscript, coded Smith 36, bears close consideration for two reasons. First, the style of the historieur, the artist who painted the miniatures, can be detected in at least three additional Books of …

Codex Atlanticus, Carol Hanley
The Courier
The gift of the Codex Atlanticus to the George Arents Research Library by the Class of 1912 and Chester Soling is a generous gesture of scholastic importance. Publishers are the Johnson Reprint Corporation, a subsidiary of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich and Centro Editoriale Giuinti, of Florence.
The Codex is a collation of sections from many of Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks, compiled by Pompeo Leoni, a sixteenth century sculptor who came to acquire them through the descendants of Leonardo's devoted disciple, Francesco Melzi.

Neoplatonism And The Florentine Renaissance, Donald L. De Merchant
Neoplatonism And The Florentine Renaissance, Donald L. De Merchant
All Master's Theses
This thesis demonstrates the correspondence between the visual arts and the literary sources of a given period in art history. During the Florentine Renaissance this correspondence lay between the Neoplatonism of Marsilio Picino and Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and the Visual art of the predominant artists; specifically, Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo Buonarrotti. The impulse that is common to these creative minds is the Neoplatonic conception or the visual image. It is through a study or this tacit dimension that we are able to some extent to view the meaning of Renaissance art.

Bruegel: His Influences And Consequences, Regina Cheng Jafree
Bruegel: His Influences And Consequences, Regina Cheng Jafree
All Master's Theses
Pieter Bruegel the elder, whose work is as modern today as centuries ago, and whose reputation as a major genius in the realm of visual, spiritual and sociological reality is lately emerging in a fashion which seems to do greater justice at a scale eminently deserved. I feel that in times to come, men like Bruegel and Caravaggio will possibly emerge as the most significant philosophers of visual arts. The fact that Bruegel is now being increasingly appreciated on a wider scale testifies to his greatness as a prophet and as a man who looked into the future, deeply and …
