Simone De Beauvoir: Cuisine, Nourriture, Existentialisme, Véronique Olivier Jan 2012

Simone De Beauvoir: Cuisine, Nourriture, Existentialisme, Véronique Olivier

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Articles and Research

The Prostitute As Neo-Manager: Sade's Juliette And The New Spirit Of Capitalism, Olivier M. Delers Jan 2012

The Prostitute As Neo-Manager: Sade's Juliette And The New Spirit Of Capitalism, Olivier M. Delers

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

In fact, Juliette's actions reveal a fundamental truth about the underlying social and economic structures of Sade's universe: the existence of two different groups, one composed of exploiters who are mobile, adaptable and connected, and the other formed by the exploited, who are condemned to a life of suffering and vagabondage. This division is also characteristic of what theorists have called 'modern network economies' and my analysis will explore the continuities between prostitution in Sade's fictional society and the nature of the post-industrial world as described by the French sociologists Luc Boltanski and Eve Chiapello in a recent study, Ihe …

Proust And Eliot: An Intertextual Reading, Inge Crosman Wimmers Jan 2012

Proust And Eliot: An Intertextual Reading, Inge Crosman Wimmers

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Defining intertextuality as “the reader’s perception of relationships between one work and others, which either preceded or followed it” (Riffaterre), this essay sets out to highlight compelling similarities between Proust’s novel, A la recherche du temps perdu, and the fictional works of George Eliot. The emphasis is on affective memory (involuntary memory and emotional templates), ethical considerations (empathy and compassion), and the kind of self-reflexive reading both writers encourage through a complicit narration that implicates the reader. They show readers how emotional memory constitutes the essence of their personal history, thus anticipating modern research in psychology and the neurosciences. …

Proust’S Innovative Vision Of Literature As Seen Through His Correspondence, Pascal Ifri Jan 2012

Proust’S Innovative Vision Of Literature As Seen Through His Correspondence, Pascal Ifri

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Marcel Proust’s monumental correspondence is filled with information about the man Marcel Proust and his daily life, but reveals very little about his ideas on art and literature or about the novel that consumed his life, A la recherche du temps perdu. Most of his letters paint an extremely polite and even obsequious man overly concerned with pleasing his correspondents or with organizing his social life while others provide information about his personal life. When he mentions his writing, it is usually in connection with practical questions or information he is seeking. Very rarely does he discuss his novel …

The Effect Of Translating “Big Words”: Anglophone Translation And Reception Of Ahmadou Kourouma’S Novel Allah N’Est Pas Obligé, Vivan Steemers Dec 2011

The Effect Of Translating “Big Words”: Anglophone Translation And Reception Of Ahmadou Kourouma’S Novel Allah N’Est Pas Obligé, Vivan Steemers

Vivan Steemers

The inter-European language translator of post-independence African novels often faces considerably more challenges than the average literary translator. Many Anglophone and Francophone African novelists attempt to “decolonize” the colonial discourse, by resorting to a “subverted” version of the Europhone language: they tailor it to African reality and base it on the syntax, the lexicon, and the rhythm of their indigenous language. The translator of these texts tends to “normalize” the linguistic innovations of the source text, thus creating a smoother reading experience for the target audience. This paper examines Frank Wynne’s translation into English of Allah n’est pas obligé, and …
